Title: BetterWB && CSMK3
Post by: Marmes on March 16, 2018, 12:40:32 AM
Did anyone try to run BetterWB on CS MK3 ? I cannot make it run. It runs on Apollo 4060 with onboard ide/scsi(A4000/3000) with onboard 030, but it doesn't run on CS MK3. Just stalls. I install WB3.1 with 060 libs everything is ok, after installing BetterWB, stops working.
Please share your experience.

Thanks!

Hi Marmes,
Could you be a little more detailed about what you did and what was the outcome?
This will help me to reproduce the issue, and even if possible, build a fix or create a workaround if it is required.

Thanks Gulliver.
1st I partition/format the Drive/SDcard/CFCard, with PFS3, whatever.
2- Install WB3.1 1gb partition.
3- 060 libs
Everything is ok here.
4th install BetterWB , install goes OK, no errors, nothing.
After install, when I reboot, the computer gives the drive click then stalls.
I noticed that the RTC stops, because if I stand 3 minutes waiting for the system boot, after opening the system with a boot disk I notice that time is delayed.
I used  CS MK3 SCSI with a CF card with acard scsi to ide. I also tried a normal scsi HDD, with the same result. Onboard scsi/ide same result.
I'm also using an Amiga 3000D
OS3.9 works perfectly with the same configuration.

Thanks for the info.
I will try to reproduce it.

Anyway, your RTC stopping is a weird issue.

Do you choose to install env-handler?

yes I did . I also think I installed without it. Same result.

Yep did it right now just to ensure. Stalls ...

Boot without startup-sequence by going to the early startup menu (to enter this menu hold both mouse keys whilst booting).

when you get to the cli type "setpatch" (without quotes)
then type "loadwb" (without quotes)
then type "endcli" (without quotes)

Do you have a functional workbench?

Doing that yes I do have :)

So then the problem is most likely in the startup-sequence.

You should try isolate the issue by adding a ";" in front of suspicious lines of the startup-sequence so that they get ignored.

Use either "ed" or better use "redit" to edit the startup-sequence.

And before that just make sure you dont install env-handler.

It has been reported as a somewhat conflictive program on some systems.

We want to avoid conflicts.

I would first target foreign 3.1 programs that get started from the startup-sequence.

After editing then reboot and see if you properly get to workbench in a normal way.

If not repeat the process untill you find the guilty program

It is hiding in there, making our life difficult ;)

Well,
If I remove

if exists Sys:Libs/icon.library
RemLib >nil: icon.library
endif

everythings boots normally. I think problem is here.

Hmm... weird issue.

PeterK icon.library works like a charm.

I will report this issue to him so that he might find a workaround or fix.

This only happens if I use CS MK3, no matter if it's onboard scsi, CybSCSIppc or buddha. If I use an Apollo3060 everything goes fine. I'm starting to wonder if all people say about good compatibility of p5 products might not be so true.

Some Phase 5 products are extremely compatible and well designed (example: Blizzard 1230 MKV and its scsi kit), others, unfortunately  not so much (example: BlizzardPPC cards).

If you load the Peter K. icon library through another method, for example LoadModule, does it work then?

I also assume you are trying to use 3.1 + BetterWB.  With 3.5 and above you don't need to use any "special tricks" to install this library.  I would try this combination: 3.9 + Peter K. icon.library + CSMK3.  Does it work then?

The trick is to find out if the CSMK3 really is having an issue with the icon.library, specifically, or if it's something else buried in configuration.  Good luck!

Edit - try a different/newer version of the icon.library?

Hi!
Yes, I'm trying to use OS3.1 + BWB.
I have an instalation of CWB3.9, if it has Peterk icon.library, I don't know, but if it has, it loads normaly and works nice.
Maybe if I try to use loadmodule on OS3.1 it will work.
I also tried the latest version of icon.library, with the same result, no work.
BetterWB works fine, there is just something in icon.library or CS MK3 or Remlib.

Is there any alternative to Remlib? this seems to be the problem here with CS MK3

I've never played around with RemLib personally, but LoadModule is a great way to load all kinds of other libraries into memory.  Bonus - the author is on this forum.  ;)

Yes, LoadModule is a good alternative for what you want to do.

it works with Loadmodule icon.library

But Remlib cannot be used, therefore it makes a reboot.

If I use the NOREBOOT option, icon.library doesn't work, I have to make a reboot since there is no way to remove the library from memory first.

Managed to make it work with some exercise :)

Took setpatch 44.38 from os3.9 bb2
Downloaded latest loadmodule from aminet

C:LoadModule >NIL: LIBS:icon.library LIBS:workbench.library REVERSE NOREBOOT
C:SetPatch SKIPROMUPDATES icon.library workbench.library QUIET

All works fine, but I still would like to see if there is a fix for remlib.

The good thing is that we could finally isolate the issue and that there is a workaround.

Now we need a fix.

Anyway, if no fix arrives I will probably end up building an update that enables the workaround if a CSMK3 is found.

Remlib would be perfect if it worked fine with MK3. But hapilly Mr Rapp is still around, maybe he can give a look to this. I'm available for testing things.
Because setpatch 44.38 doesn't belong to OS3.1 and Loadmodule is perfect, but would be unecessary.
