Title: X5000 Having Ethernet Adapter Issues
Post by: Acill on September 06, 2017, 07:19:56 AM
I just got my X5000 and keep having to delete my network connection from devs/netinterfaces after a reboot and then reboot again and add a new one every time I power off or reboot.

Why? Well because it doesnt seem to respond after I get it added and then do a reboot. Every single time. Symptoms are I add the RTL8169 device using the "New Connection" tool in System/Internet, it works, I reboot and it doesnt work. Repeat and repeat.

Its a PCIe card that came with my X5000 from Amiga on the Lake. I tried reseating it, but it just does the same, works for one cycle before I have to delete the setting and add it all over again.

Paul, You have to SAVE the new connection setting.

Just follow the wizard. start at the type of connection...etc

test the config.. use the auto feature.. save

(if the card is bad, wizard won't find the chip set and port) no config to save

It seems like its saving. The file and reports are created. I also see the file in prefs internet. I am trying again and looking for a save I am missing.

Okay, ran the wizard again, it ouputs the 8169 report and shows a shell window that its added and shows my IP and things, the wizard closes and no save box ever comes up at that point.

I think I had similiar problems with the wizard. All I did was go into Devs/NetInterfaces and modified the interface text file so that it included device=rtl8139.device

# DEVS:NetInterfaces/interface
# File generated by Internet 53.3 (1.8.2011)
# On Monday, 10-Jul-17 at 16:07:56
device=rtl8139.device
hardwaretype=Ethernet
configure=dhcp
mtu=0

I'll take a look and see if this is missing in my file too tonight after work. All i know is I am now at the point of wanting to put this thing away and not use it. I have no use for a machine that wont remember the network setting and cant resolve a host name after a reboot ever single time!

Well good news and bad. The good is I just put in an 8139 PCI card and it works great, the bad news is the x5000 only has two PCI slots and I have to pull my SATA-II controller out of one to put this in. I really want my 8169 PCIe card working.

Aaron over at Amiga on the Lake is awesome and said he will get one out to me as a replacement. At least I can get online and stay online for now. I just had to pull out my 4000T network card to do it off the mediator!

Welcome to the voodoo of the PCI and PCI-e cards of the X5K.

Hit and miss it seems for ethernet and sound cards.

Hmm.... Well at least I am up. Lucky these are cheap cards. I may just order a few of the various 8169 cards and see what happens.

I keep wondering how the sound card problems were not noticed by X5000 beta testers .  (Scathing remarks withheld for now)

I seem to remember SOMEONE recently saying to me that "only classic hardware has issues that require constant patching, reinstalling, etc."  :hammer:

@Acill,

Save the setup in the ".info" file of tcp/ip stack?

Yup, it ended up being the card was bad. I replaced it with a spare RTL8139 out of my 4000T I was using in the mediator. This one is working flawlessly now at the expense of losing my nice SATA-II PCI card in that slot, but I can get another card for a few bucks and find a working one I am sure.

@Acill

I have both PCI 8139 and PCIe 8169 Ethernet cards installed in my X5000 for test purposes. Both appear to work fine (once set up). The other PCI slot has an sii3112 sata card.

I also have a PCIe Sound card which again works fine.

Oh, I believe it, just for some reason this machine doesn't like the 819 card I received. It looses its settings or something every reboot.

Did you think to try the pci-e card after you re-installed the OS?

You being the hardware guy, I expect you made sure the card is fit correctly?

Yup, first thing I did. Same problem in both of the small PCIe slots. The card is found no problem when you run the wizard. I select it, use auto configure, it comes online and save the file in networks/devs like it should.

I can go out on the internet perfectly with no issues. The moment I reboot its as if someone unplugged the ethernet cable from the back of the machine. The card is still detected, the file is correct and still in devs, it just wont go online any longer unless you delete the settings file and start the process all over again. This is ONLY with the PCIe card. The PCI one works just fine, so I know its not my network or the OS itself. Its something in the PCIe slots or the card itself.

Actually no, it does lock up or go silent and I have to reboot at times. I just discovered this last night while playing some internet radio. i'll do some more testing tonight and get back.

Can someone recommend a soundblaster card that works? I am willing to try one and see. It came with some generic sound card it seems.

i use a bog-standard envy24ht card from syba and it works brilliantly. we hit some issues with some CMI8738-based cards in beta testing, so i switched, and haven't any problems since. i can't remember what the root cause was; i'll see if i can find the email thread later tonight.

AMIGA on the Lake need to remove this quote because it is not accurate :

Quote
* Every AmigaOne X5000 sold by Amiga  On The Lake has the best sound card Available. A PCI sound card. Some of  you may have been lucky enough to find a PCIe sound card that works  with AmigaOS4.1FE in the X5000. Almost all PCIe sound cards have a  defect in the bridge chip that locks up the system (other problems in  other OS's).

Some pci ones work ok under Amigaos 4.1. seem better in the first pci slot .

Looks like mine is a SIIG Soundwave 5.1 PCI card.

No problem.
I am using a pci cmi 8738 in the first slot and it works with no lockups  under AmigaOS 4.1.
But it locks up with full screen video under Linux  so I use HDMI audio .

I just placed an order for an M-Audio Revolution 5.1 card. According the Hyperion's site it is a compatible Envy card. Was cheap enough, will give it a go. :)

Acill - your card will need to be replaced.

So yeah, Tunenet just locked up while playing a station after about 10 minutes.

Apparently that is one of the tests Amigakit now use when testing their X500-builds. I assembled my own machine  (Got just the motherboard from AmigaKit) so finding a working sound card is on me but AOTL should really replace your sound card with one that works as you bought a complete system.

These SIIG cards are not a good version of a PCI card?? Man. I am out not only the Ethernet card mine came with but also the Audio card? Sheesh, they need to make this very clear on the sites selling the systems!

My current card is this one: http://www.generationamiga.com/2017/05/01/soundwave-5-1-pci-for-amigaone-x5000-and-amigaos-4-1/

Is the the card? Best I see is $50US

Yeah I guess the SIIG cards are quite flakey... or at least flakey with X5000's.

I will let you know how mine goes when I get it. Aaron just needs to find a new card to go with.

So far I can play whdload demos over and over with no sound issues, same for games. MP3 or streaming radio with Tunenet locks up in at best 15 minutes every time.

BTW, I have a PCIe cmi8738 that I bought from AmigaKit..

give amigaamp3 a try. i don't use tunenet as i've always had stability issues with it, even before A-EON's acquisition. as for the sound cards, mine is PCI-e hosted. my PCI slots consist solely of my SATA card. audio, video, ethernet, and my Xorro prototyping board are all in PCI-e slots.

But when I was trying different hardware, there were several things that had issues.

I just ordered a SB Live 5.1 Sb0220 PCI after reading for hours in the hyperion forums. Its seems its a good supported OS4 card. It was only $8 so if it doesnt work out any better I wont be to upset, as a bonus it works in my 4000T with mediator too.

EMU10K based chipsets work with the driver yes. I've had one in my 3000T with mediator back when I owned it. They are a pain to get working though.

I would take this report with a huge grain of salt.  No one else has reported this as working, Elbox does not list this as a supported card and the only driver that exists is for the openpci.library version of PCI drivers on Prometheus and maybe Grex.  Elbox lists it as supporting the mixer only, so if you want to pass Amiga audio from line in to line out, it would work for that, but not as an AHI device.

Unless he's talking about OS4, then maybe.
