Title: SAM 440 -EP Flex
Post by: alphagemini on August 29, 2017, 04:59:35 AM
I'm thinking about stitching this Sam thing into my 4000 040, it looks very fast. Has anyone had experience with this? Will it run progs created on a 4000?

@ alphagemini

when I had my Samflex@800 back in 2008/9 it had some sound stuttering problems when running some bigger games like Super Stardust AGA under E-UAE.  Not sure if with the latest E-UAE update if this is still the case? perhaps you should wait to see what the new Tabor board is like when it's finally released

Thanks for the reply. I thought that it was an Amiga style thing, not needing UAE. I used the 4000 for number crunching, not games, net etc..

sam440 is basically same sort of thing as x5000 namely a complete ppc computer, only much slower..

@alphagemini

so long as the program doesn't hit the custom chips directly -- as opposed to using OS APIs -- then it doesn't need UAE. since you've mentioned your interest AOS4-capable systems in other threads, perhaps the best thing would be to ask about software you want to run. if it's custom, and you don't mind forwarding it to me, i'd be happy to test it for you and even grab benchmark data if needed.

i have a SAM440ep-flex, pegasos 2, X5000, and A1222. just let me know. :)

ok then as eliyhau has already noted then they might work just fine as many 68k spreadsheets/ programs work just fine on my X1000 without the need for UAE.

I have Sam 440ep Flex. Majority of productivity software runs just fine. Faster than ever with real 68k cpu. Good example of speed is Napalm game! It unplayable because it is so fast, you lost game before you can do anything. About a 60 seconds play before enemy is destroyed you.

There is some problems. Many apps requires some tinkering, like disabling themes, open it it's own screen, etc. You would need to lear to do those tricks.

What else? It is too weak for many games, like Star wars jedi academy etc. Quake III or Hexen II works just fine.

Web browsing is OK, if you manage with Nertsurf is is even fast. Pages like Facebook requires to use mobile version to have usefull speed.

If you can get one for nice price go for it. I wouldn't sell Amiga 4000 to get one, you would regret it a lot latter, if you do so.
