I am seriously torn between running a Blizzard 1220 card, a Blizzard 030 and an 060 board. The modest board shows the Amiga off with just 4MB fast mem. The 030 with 64MB is both compatible and powerful but it can't run the latest big demoscene productions and the 060 is expensive and impressive but least compatible for classic games. Only room for 1 Amiga. Which should I stick with?

solution is by both a 030 & 060 as you only need one amiga to run whxhhwrver acts you have ;-)
if you must choose one then go with the 060 and if you have problems with your fav games/ programs ask for the many workarounds available and if all fails you will Always make your money back and more if you choose to sell it

If you think you could need a 060 get the blizzard. It has better whd capability than my Apollo had. I had a few 030 board's as well and for most stuff I did the blizz 1230 IV was excellent. If my computer was only for whdload and mod files I would stick with the 1220 with 4-8mb fast

060, there can be only one.
As for demo-scene, 99% of AGA productions require an 060 since the late 90's.
-
I would have thought it was more of a case of getting what you can , when you can for a price you can afford.
-
Maybe if you have a bit of patience, you could opt for the upcoming Vampire V1200?

How about buying the one that fits your pocket book right now.
Play with it for a while. Decide if it's adequate for what you're wanting to do. All the while saving some more coins.
If you decide it isn't going to work for you, sell it and apply the selling price along with what you've (hopefully) saved up and go to the next step.
Keep doing that until you are happy with the performance.
Knew a girl who did this with cars. She wanted a new Mercedes so bad she could taste it. But on a college student's income it just wasn't practical so she bought a much older MB, did some work on it while saving up and progressed to a newer MB after selling the first one. Did that 3 or 4 times and bought a REALLY nice, brand new Mercedes when she graduated.
Just a thought.

It's a hard question that only you can answer. Right of the bat the B1220 loses to the B1230 in everything but cuteness so that is the easiest to write off. The B1230 vs a 060 board is a much harder decision. The B1230 will excel in compatibility but will not have enough power to run the latest demos and even some later games. A 060 board on the other hand have way more power and makes using the machine much nicer. However it does come with a bit less compatibility, though there are many workarounds these days and if all else fails you can usually turn off the accelerator and run in stock 020 mode to run what isn't compatible with the faster CPU.
I run with 060 CPU in most of my machines and I can't say I feel limited.

I wonder if/when some A1200 version of the Vampire will appear.

@a1200,
Never had a problem running old game on an 060 but sure helps on newer ones like Doom and Genetic Species!

Ok after considering what's possible with the 030 /68882 50MHz you only need to look at something like TBl's Tint demo. The 060 is going to cost me at least twice as much but up to three times as much. My Blizzard's 030 chip is a revision C so the whole thing runs with a moderate temperature. If I got another 060 (had one years ago) it would run more stuff but the it would be like what about PPC/Picasso/audio card etc. So going to stick with the B1230/50MHz/64MB/FPU. Thanks to all who put opinion across on here and the other forums I posed this question.

not sure what you mean about ppc/picasso/audio...
i think you are confusing the blizzard 1260 with the blizzard ppc board?
In any case you cant go wrong with the bliz 1230.

What I meant was if I upgrade to 060, will that be enough or will I keep wanting to upgrade until I end up with something that looks and feels nothing like the C= A1200.

Watch out, it's a disease.
Also, your wallet will thank you.

The same is true of most hobbies, eh?

I'm doing a build for someone now and used the 1233n for the accelerator. This is quite fast feeling. The RAM is awesome, the fast clockport on it makes the RapidRoad I am using awesome, and it is configurable. Just an all around great accelerator so far.

A stock A1200? You really want something to feel like a stock A1200?! How far do you take that? Most of my high school friends wouldn't recognise an Amiga with a hard drive and would have considered that a PeeCee thing! AGA modes are still available to you when you have a RTG board! It just makes RTS / 2.5D games a lot faster as well as productivity software much better. PageStream is awesome on a 060/RTG card and the Amiga should have had modes to best the Mac at the DTP game even if it required a monochrome monitor ala the Atari ST.

It's a cost/benefit thing. Some of the Amiga 060 demos don't run well unless you use WinUAE. So there is a very narrow window of software that is worth spending all of that money on.
Different people have different priorities. Imagine the insane price it would get to if everyone was trying to upgrade to the max.

I think he means he want something that feels like a moderately upgraded A1200 from his youth and settle on that instead of having a powerhouse on the CPU glancing at upgrades he can't do easily. However it's just RTG that is hard to do on the A1200, PPC isn't really needed for classic and just about everything else can be done pretty easy like PCMCIA NIC, clockport USB and soundcard etc.
