Has it had the power hack to use the A500's power supply?  If so do you have a big enough power supply on the A500?

Does the A500 work without it being connected?

My A500 has the original power supply.
It works without the HD connected.

Slow spin up of the drive / failing drive is a pretty common problem. Also insufficient power / failing power supply.

As previous comment said, have you done the A590 power hack on this unit?

Early A590's used XT MFM not SCSI HDDs which are very unreliable. The drive might be failing, slow spin up is one indication of an older drive failing.

Only do this if you have a card reader or SCSI2SD (or similar solution) installed.  It works with an old-fashion mechanical hard drive, but the amount of power they draw can be pretty high and is not recommended.
