Sure, handing the IP over to well known control freaks, "good", hmm...

I hope this means more development, but we all know how Jens does on his software.  :(

...rushes to download the last release of P96 "Unofficial" before it gets taken down, just in case...

Ha! Yeah, so did I. What a mess.

Pity things didn't get standardized around CyberGraphX.
BUT, since that's proprietary too (V5 being incorporated into MorphOS)...

Every time something like this happens, I get the urge to reexamine AROS.

Did that some weeks ago to 4 different sources! :roflmao:

Well, at least we'll have some new sh!tstorm posts to read for a few days.... on several sites! :laugh1:

Yeah...that's generally the conclusion I come to after (yet again) considering it.
But WTF, sold it to Hyperion?

Not "opened it to the public", or "gave it to A-eon", but "sold it to someone sneaky enough to cheat Bill McEwen". :furious:

Crickey! Selling the same thing twice! Now that's pulling a fast one.
Sshhh... no one tell Hyperion or I.C. :laugh1:

One can only hope for the best here, but as things have looked in the past I dont see much good in this.

You should definitely change your Southpark avatar to dead Kenny covered in rats.

Optimists...again, sheesh.

You get yet another proof that the curse is real, and you want a positive spin put on it. :roflmao:

Does Jens even have any products that would utilise this?

I'm a disapointed for this.

First : prototype ready 1/Q of 2017, preordering start after that. Price Less than 200€
Then : prototype ready 2017, preordering start after that. Price 350€

Which one would that be? I grabbed a package from the Apollo/Vampire website, I assume that would be the latest?

I don't know anything about what software is available on the Apollo/Vampire website, so it's quite possible whatever you have may be newer. Care to share? ;)

Afaik this is the latest version: http://lilliput.amiga-projects.net/Picasso96.htm

Not recommended. This version had a couple of problems, and it's not advisable. There is a version in Aminet you had to register that worked fine.

It's also 15 years newer than the version on Aminet. Works fine for me. Ymmv. ;)

What are the "couple of problems"?

Nothing per se, in fact its all pretty amusing at least at a distance.

Former truck driver known to employ complex machinations and with apparent delusions of grandeur gets cheated out of an asset he in all probability didn't really own the rights to anyway (by a lawyer no less).

It just gives you an idea of the caliber of people we are dealing with here.

That's not the point. People on a1k.org reported that it failed to render correctly in some configurations. I personally cannot say much, but just respond to what has been observed by others.

Anyhow, the discussion is a bit mood as there is now a statement from Jens at eab: (see http://eab.abime.net/showpost.php?p=1152299&postcount=22)

This has reached the public sooner than intended - we're not yet ready with a press release and the infrastructure of the shop system required for what I am planning: Sales of a slightly improved version on a pay-what-you-want basis.

Grond's point has been made a lot of times, and we're well aware that we can't change the status of the existing archives out there: It's shareware, and redistribution of this shareware is allowed. No need for panic-downloads :-)

Further, I will open up the API of P96 for free. Tobias&Alexander's model of "two sources of income" (one from shareware fees and the other from paid API support) didn't work out. The UAE driver was used many times to reverse the API, and it was not clear if this was fully legal, as the UAE driver has put parts of the closed-source API under GPL. I really don't want to start yet another discussion about "was it legal or not" and "is it legal to use this information". As a result of past discussions, the best we can agree on is that it's a legal grey zone, as all sides have valid points.

I will end this legal grey zone by opening the API in my tech Wiki (wiki.icomp.de). This will allow hobby-projects to write drivers with full 2D acceleration support. VA2000 and Vampire can already be considered "taken out of this legal grey zone" with this announcement. Just give me some time to make the Wiki page.

@thor

im still a bit suspicious, but it sounds good so far. might chip in for apparently missing p96 mediator voodoo license if i even come back to using it.

If Jens is being honest here I will eat my words. This sounds to good to be true, but P96 needs this exact approach!

In the meantime, I suggest you all go get the unofficial P96 while you can. I use it every day and have for a long time now. Its quite good and stable.

I use 2.2a4 which last time I got was here: http://www.amibay.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=37668&d=1355300957 (http://www.amibay.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=37668&d=1355300957)

"...I will open up the API of P96 for free"

Yes, that does render the discussion moot.
And it eliminates any further finger pointing about profit motives (as IF there is significant profit potential in the Amiga market).

The lack of a external floppy drive connector did it for me. It would probably be possible to hack one in, but I'll probably skip it.

I'm still more interested in the new run of c64 reloaded boards, including the FPGA one (which I assume is chameleon in a different form factor).

An A1200 form factor motherboard with an FPGA for the chipset is also quite interesting, although Jens needs to find a way to use up the chips he bought.

OR move to Linux and stop worrying about being nickeled and dimed to death.

THAT is funny. Yeah, I want to pay for browsers too.
No, actually, I use Odyssey, so I don't really need iBrowse (and browsing with legacy hardware is a experience best left to those who are really into PAIN).
