Title: FastATA can't see Transcend 8GB card
Post by: dawiper on March 30, 2017, 06:52:50 PM
I just bought a new card, and my fastATA/powerflyer doesn't see it.
It doesn't show in ataprefs or in hdtoolbox. Trandscend card does work just fine in winuae.

I've tried both ffs and pfs3, but that shouldn't matter since the card is a no-show for the controller.

The cf adapter works fine when I insert the old card.

Any ideas?

Card is TS8GCF133 and looks just like this: http://www.comx-computers.co.za/TS8GCF133-specifications-50721.htm

An obvious question, but have you confirmed that the card works correctly in another device?

Try formatting on another Amiga or with WinUAE.

The file system won't make a difference if you can't first get it to show up in HDToolbox to be able to prep & partition it.  Is it set to scan your devices correctly?

Does the card work correctly on another device?

Yes. The card works perfect on a multicard reader in winuae. I've tried to ffs and pfs3 and just blank card (diskpart clean). But as stated filesystem doesnt matter if it doesnt show up in ataprefs. It should come up as secondary master. But its just empty like nothing is connected.

I've heard some of those cheaper card adapters only support a single device per channel. Possible to try it as the only device and see if it makes a difference?

Trouble is that it is alone on the channel. I have 2 adapters, one on each channel... 4 GB card that came with the adapter works fine. It's this adapter: http://amigastore.eu/en/133-cf-hard-disk-kit-35.html

Are there any powerflyer software updates? Occasionally there's FastATA software updates. Wasn't the powerflyer from the 90's? Mike's right though, HDToolBox should see it. Have you checked the master/slave jumper on the CF adapter? Have you checked the CF adapter on anything else (like PC or A600/A1200 IDE)?

Edit: Okay, I see now that the old 4GB card works fine with it. That sorta rules out the adapter like you say.
On my FastATA there's different transfer modes that can be selected. What kind of config options are in your powerflyer prefs?

I use the ATA3.driver V7.0 from elbox. You can select PIO mode, standby time and resident yes/no.

FastATA/Powerflyer should auto negotiate PIO mode on boot afaifk...

I suppose it would be okay to email amigastore.eu and ask them whether the Transcend 8GB card that you have will work with their CF adapter that your purchased from them for your PowerFlyer. Just tell that that it's not detecting it - they may know why. They may be able to advise.

Are you sure the CF card isn't a fake?

Have you tried other PIO modes? Hmmm...like you say, if it doesn't detect it, I can't see it mattering.

I use the 4GB version of that CF card in a PCMCIA CF adapter on my A1200/A600.

I've tried setting lower pio before swapping the cards, but no go. :(

I think I will just take the easy road and solve the problem by dumping money on it. Order a card that is known to work, or maybe upgrade to FastATA-V or both. :D

I think I've found the problem:

From eab (http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=61666):

"...As mentioned above, original scsi.device IDE drivers have no problem with removable type CF cards or SD cards.
However, drivers by Elaborate Bytes - idefix97 and individual computers product drivers - do not work with removable type devices.

The drivers do not comply with the ATA-4 (or newer) specification.
IDE drivers use the ATA command IDENTIFY DEVICE to get all kinds of information from the device.

The first word of the device reply (word 0, 'General configuration') is 848Ah for removable type CF cards, and 044Ah or 0040h for fixed type CF cards..."

In other words. I should get a "fixed" card, often labeled "industrial". Or get a trueIDE adapter to use the card I have.
