Post by: mindprober on March 19, 2017, 08:11:35 PM
Hey, look! Amiga.org's very own blakespot was on TWIT's Screen Savers yesterday!

Good job, Blake!

Neat! Thanks for sharing. :) And awesome rig, @blakespot. I always liked the concept of this game, just... dammit... Never enough time. :(

Hah, thanks for the note, guys! Apprecaite the "Amiga.org's very own..." - nice ring to it. :-)

Yea, I do love that game. Leo didn't know about the retro side of things with me, going in. I was aproached for the show just on the NMS angle. I wrote the Polygon piece, mentioning $$ spent on NMS, in order to counter some of the hate that gets heaped on the game.

The cleanest and tidiest the computer room has ever been is how you see it in that shot. It's something of a mess right now. It's on my list to get it back sparkling. Parts laying about from enhancing a C64, A1000, and an HP.

Cheers, folks.

@blakespot

I'm watching the episode now. Nice retro collection and nice Amiga's! Your website looks awesome too!

I especially like the Amiga 1000 adventures you post.

No judgement here. I bought NMS for the PS4 a month or so back. It is kind of relaxing kicking back to play with a glass of wine. I also enjoy games where you get to explore which does help I guess. The guys at work thought I was a bit nuts getting it though.

It took me some time to find the interview. I only found it the next day, because I had to do some shopping. I'd never heard of this "Screen Savers" before. It gave me the impression it was all about screen savers.

To save people some effort, this interview starts at about 33 minutes in. Not long after that, we get a shot of Blakespot's room where he keeps lots of different classic computers. Perhaps you can spot an Amiga in there, but I couldn't. I did notice an Apple II and an Atari 520ST was pointed out, but it looked like it had been rehoused, more like a Mega ST. The Amiga wasn't even mentioned at all. After about a minute of shots of that room, there's nothing about the Amiga either.

The interview moves on to the game "Rescue on Fractulus", which is described as a forerunner of "No Man's Sky", the main theme of the interview. This is a game where the planets you explore are mathematically generated, like in "Rescue on Fractulus" and "Elite". We hear that Blakespot has spent US$4,000 on building a custom PC just to play this game! I haven't got US$4,000 or equivalent, but if I did, then I wouldn't spend it on that. I would've liked to hear lots of reasons why I would want to play this game, as well as the minimum hardware spec needed to play it. The way things stand, I'm not interested in playing it.

Of course, the interview does mention the website http://www.bytecellar.com , which seems far more interesting than "No Man's Sky".

Did you come here just to bash the article or do you have something constructive to add?  LOL, and as for "why you might want to play the game", google it.

You can spend it on whatever makes you happy.  :D

I don't like this interview because I had to search hard for it and it doesn't mention the Amiga at all. Of course it does mention that you can play the game on a PS4, but I can't afford a PS4, so I'm not interested in hearing about it. I think it would be a great idea if users of this forum could input some settings which generate warnings on threads which mention things they can't afford, so they could avoid reading about them.

Dude.  Get a better job, or sell a kidney, or something.  This is like the 293847923847th time you've complained on this forum about "not having enough money for a thing".  Now you're trying to censor what other people post about so as not to offend your delicate snowflake finances?  Omg.

Also, how would a forum thread know what a person can afford or not? :)
We all have different incomes and obligations.

Just remember that blakespot didn't post here about it himself, as he knew more than anyone it wasn't Amiga related.

I posted it not for Amiga related content but because an Amiga.org member was on the show and I thought people would like to see it. I did not for one minute think this would cause any controversy. I better think twice next time!

Dude should also stay away from any threads related to upgrades, since one way or another they pretty much all involve spending money.

Yea, not much about Amiga in there, though the scan-through the room they showed shows maybe three. And what's worse, Leo asked me about an ST! :-) Well, ST Joust _is_ a good game (and it's now ported to Amiga (http://www.lemonamiga.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9842) ICYMI). :-)

Yes, it didn't occur to me to post here for reasons paul1981 stated. I appreciate jdryyz posting since I've been around here as a light poster for around 15 years.

Actually, the whole thing blew up larger than I would've guessed. I wrote the $4K No Man's Sky post on my ByteCellar.com blog to address some of the hate that has surrounded the game. Kuchera saw it and approached me to agree for Polygon to run it as an Op-Ed. I agreed and it was notably edited for brevity vs. what's (still) at my blog. Leo's TNSS producer saw it on Polygon and asked me to come on the show. The fact that I have a retro computing passion wasn't at all part of any of it other than background info I provided going into the show. I didn't feel I could branch to far off to discussing retro as the show was live and that wasn't the topic.

At any rate, No Man's Sky -- it's awesome on a PS4, don't need a PC to have the fun. I encourage folks to check it out. And, I will say - whether or not it matters - AmigaBruno, a large chunk of the $ spent there was funded by what sadly came to me in the way of inheritance in my mother's passing last year. She was there watching me sell one system and get the next, helping along the way, all those years in the '80s and '90s. I don't think she would mind too much helping with yet another computer. :-)
