I need more power, and the 145 Watts old PSU can't feed the power hungry peripherals: All the modern HDs have a ~10 watt requirement, and the older ones is hard to find, or it isn't a good idea to get a second-hand one.
What are the alternatives?
-Get an A4000D specific PSU (if exists one?)
-A DIY PC-PSU, but there are some issues... Just think of the "rod" to the power on/off switch :-)
I'd like to read from you who have done such an upgrade.

You are right, news Hds and others devices ask a lot of Watts...
My solution, but not the only I hope, is to use a PC power supply for all devices. However to avoid any problem of mainboard alimentation, I just kept the original PSU. Thus, now I have two PSU: one amiga for the mainboard and one PC PSU for all HD and what you want. It is not very beautiful but it's powerful!!!

I'm going to use a standard 300-350W ATX PSU on my A4000D. It looks like it will fit okay and is easy to adapt to the A4000D. I'm not planning on doing anything with the front switch, and just using the switch on the back of the ATX PSU. Although, it would also be possible to secure a switch to the front of the case and run wiring back to the PSU.

Please make a how-to, with photos and stuff... That would be interesting, I don't want to change the case in favor of a nameless ugly tower-box :-( .

My thoughts exactly. I could have gotten an Elbox tower but where's the fun in that. :) I'll post everything when I get it done. I'm probably looking at about 30 days to do the mods, A4000Di install, etc.

First I must just say that I appreciate your opinion about towering the A4000D :).
May I ask what stuff you have put in your A4000D to exceed the ratings of the original PSU.. as an A4000D owner, I am thinking of the limited amount of space inside the case for expansions ;).
One idea would be to take the inner contents of a 200W+ MicroATX power supply and mount that inside the original A4000D PSU instead of the original inner contents... provided that there is enough room for it. I dont have the possibility to compare the measurements right now, so I dont know.

That's all (I think so), but the main problem is the harddisks: when I tried to add the old 130MB Segate (http://www.amiga.org/forums/viewtopic.php?topic_id=9771&forum=7) that came with the mobo, it started to make strange noises (clicks) when powered-on (cold boot). I had to unplug the power from the CDROM and let the 2 HDs alone in order to transfer the files.
The disks draw much power on "power on" to start spinning the motor (lots of amperes), and continue to do so when active or idle...
