Title: Replacement FDD
Post by: sturulez on January 01, 2017, 09:31:18 PM
Hi,

I think my A1200 floppy disk drive has died. It doesn't do anything, no ticking noise and doesn't load up a floppy disk once I've inserted it.

I understand that floppy disk drives for the Amiga are not that easy to obtain and some of them seem expensive to purchase online.

I have an Amiga 500 and an Atari 520ST. Can I use either of these floppy disk drives as a suitable replacement?

Thanks

You can convert some PC drives to work, but Amigakit sells them for about $25 CDN. The 500 drive will work, but I'm sure if the eject button is the same size (you may have to swap them).

You can still buy them new from a variety of resellers.

Although, if it doesn't do anything at all, you might just check that the power cable is plugged in tight, first. :)

You can also get them new at amigastore.eu for about $25,  though I prefer amigakit version.

The 520ST drive is a standard floppy drive but 800KB rather than 880KB and I believe the DS0/DS1 setting is reversed.

Okay, so ive purchased a new floppy disk drive, thinking that would be the issue, but its not.

I can hear a very faint ticking from the drive and thats it, when the amiga boots up it boots up workbench on the HDD.

when i put a disk in, nothing happens, no lights and it doesnt load the disk.

Any suggestions?

Confirm the drive is receiving 12V and 5V on the appropriate pins?

At least you have a spare drive at the ready now.
