Excited.... took the plunge and ordered my AmigaOne X5000 from Amiga On The Lake in USA. First time ordering from them. So far Aaron seems nice a nice guy and glad he opened an Amiga Shop in USA. We needed one for sure.
Will let you know how my purchase all pans out. I look forward to buying more goods from him after I get any Christmas monies.

Congrats, it's a great machine.
I'm having a great time with mine!

Any time frame on delivery? And did you register with A-EON?
-
@AmigaSociety
TJ!!! congrats! i really hope you like the system, and i'll be interested to see how you think it compares with the X1000 you used to have. i love mine, but then again, i never had the X1K. aaron rocks, and i'm thrilled we have him state-side.

Hoping before end of 2016. ;-)
I don't think one can register until I get the machine and know serial # for software, etc... ;-)

Been painful being without amiga os system for 1.5 + years. Will be nice to be back.

way to go TJ:hammer::banana: ya it's great for you guys to have a US dealer again for sure. Be great if we can have one on the north side of the rock too as the dollar exchange/duties are a killer

Cool. He deserves support. Its nice to have an Amiga vendor in the country that invented the platform again.

OK. I meant the registration for notification from AEON a few months ago. Those that registered would get a followup email from the reseller when its available, so since I haven't heard from any reseller I figured it's still in preorder.

For the record, I have about twice as many classic systems than I do Macs.

@Iggy
I like to think of the Amiga as being adopted by Europe. The Amiga was so unloved by both the Commodore parent company (not Commodore UK which knew what a gem they had) and the U.S.A. in general due to woeful marketing (and Yanks not being as able to spot a great product without being 'SOLD & marketed' it ;-)). It is such a shame and quite frankly if Newtek and the Video Toaster hadn't come along then virtually no one in the U.S. would have heard of or remembered the Amiga.

Maybe if it wasn't sold and marketed as a home game machine for the kids it would have done better. I hung on as long as possible with graphic and productivity but it was pointless by the early nineties.

Frankly, my company was selling its own multi-user 68K systems at the time, and after a visit from some IBM engineers (and the receipt of a pre-release copy of Window 3.0) I was able to accurately predict what would happen to the computer market.
Hey, having a better idea NEVER guarentees you a win in a commodity driven market.
And Commodore was fairly clueless about how to advance the Amiga.
Paula should have been scrapped in favor of a plug in audio card.
Same with AGA graphics. It was way to slow and unsuited for 3D graphics.
OUR machines always used plug in graphics cards (and a better OS, but that is besides the point).
Development of the 68000 series stopped as the Mac moved to PPC.
Commodore was foolish enough to be looking at PA-RISC.
And their best engineer, Dave Haynie was never that good anyway.
Certainly he was no Jay Miner, and Zorro III's dma issue clearly point to that.
Our dreams died, and those of second rate carnival barkers like Steve Jobs prospered.
-
@Iggy
The truth still stands that the American media clocked the amazing graphical and multimedia abilities of the Amiga and then proceeded to ask "What is the point!" Admittedly, it's up to the parent company to market their product and the black and white Amiga advertising in the 1985 launch era were scandalous but still the media saw the Amiga (in the flesh), were wowed by it and then had no imagination as to how to use it! Steve Jobs was perhaps right that these sorts of people don't know what they need until it's marketed to them but the majority of computer users in the UK and most of Europe understood the Amiga was special so why didn't American users get it? I thought green screen PCs sucked in the 80s and I still think Windows 10 sucks now (though by not as much but still). Why did people happily waste a decade of their lives between 1985 and 1995 using substandard IBM compatible rubbish while the Amiga was cheaper, more fun and brimming with potential from the people that brought you the C64! Windows 3.0 and 3.1 sucked. The only computer I ever used that used 3.1 was a old computer circa 1996 that powered a CAD plotter. It could cope with that in a sad industrial use kind of a way, but the GUI and general experience was below par. People only used it because they were "told" to by IT managers and industry bosses. Macs were fun but black and white screens in the early days and then clunky OS and the worst mice that I ever used in the iMac days.

In a word Boz?
Software.
The same reason people were willing to put up with dreadful crap like CPM.
Which come to think of it MS-DOS was just a knock off of.
And Jobs with his over priced closed platform misuse of the 68K processor still pisses me off.
But as far as Europeans just "getting it"?
Sound like something the French would claim.
To this day I still see loads of Europeans embracing Macs or Linux.
Nothing in particular about either of those alternatives appeals to me.
One is perpetually overpriced and quickly obsolete, the other has a large base of software that isn't quite as capable as commercial alternatives.
And where did you get the bizarre idea that Amigas were affordable?
The high pricing sold a lot of Atari STs.
-
We waited for good software and the most needed never arrived.
When I saw that I could have vga and super vga graphics with thousands of colors with real commercial graphic applications such as Corel suite, cheap word processors, and accounting software for my business, it was over, very reluctantly.
That and 3d games like Wolfenstein etc. it was hard to look back.
But I returned around 1999- 2000 and dropped it only to come back again this year , first with Cloanto, then Amibian and now ratcheting up a 1200.
Still fun but not deluding myself as to where my real computing will be.
If I do get my hands on a Vampire, that will be great but doesn't change much.
-
@amigasociety
Nice, let us know when you get it :)

Yeah, I really get that.
I've kept an A2000, and I have a CD32, but legacy Amiga hardware just stagnated.
Its fun to revisit, but it painfully obvious why we lost.
-
@Iggy
Its fun to revisit, but it painfully obvious why we lost.
I get that the software houses didn't get on board as the IBM compatibles were already installed in US business and a lot of homes by 1985 but that doesn't mean with the right marketing and journalists actually singing the Amiga's praises in the mainstream press it couldn't have made more of a dent State-side! I mean the Video Toaster was a massive success and yet I haven't seen a single historical Commodore advert to help 'broadcast' the Amigas use in broadcasting, titling and 3-D raytracing etc! The journalist said it wasn't needed because PCs were 'good enough' and Commodore didn't want to push it as anything other than the next C64-like widget to get into Toys R Us! In 1985 we had a chance. By 1987 we still had a chance in UK with the A500 (and C= UK took that chance ;-)) but by 1987 the A2000 and later the A3000 (+ would have been better) could not establish themselves as competitors to the Mac never mind the PC in America. It's very very sad. At least as I say, the Amiga is remembered fondly in Europe for gaming (and Deluxe Paint) in the same warm fuzzy way the NES is in America. Seriously, it is that much of a beloved part of a lot of 30 and 40 somethings childhoods.

Sorry to hijack the OPs original post. I would really like to hear about your experiences with this machine.

I'm beginning to use my X5000 every day.
With a tool like Sketchblock and I'm trying to learn Blender. I'm having a great time.

My apologies as well.
I didn't mean to get sidetracked over my angst about the track personal computing took.
As I intend to buy one of these, I'm particularly interested in hearing about it myself.
Lack of software be damned.
Oh, and game software for the Amiga has NEVER been my focus (European warm NES-like fuzzies or not). It was a damned good productivity machine.
Why would you pay thousands to play video games?

Two words; Virtual Reality.
But yeah, I agree. It was oddly the same from the Atari side, the ST was definitely more popular in Europe than the US. Hell, I have been searching for nearly a year for a US keyboard to replace my UK one on my Falcon.
-

Yes, there is a Falcon on eBay right now going for $1500 that I'd actually consider buying if I had the available funds.
Crazy price, but a neat machine.
And having run Microware's OS-9 on an ST, I rather like the more bare bones nature of the Atari design.
The Amiga chipset was never central to my attraction to these machines.
It was the Motorola 68K cpus.
But I don't get the virtual reality comment, more like alternate reality.
But then, in a country dumb enough to vote in a president like Donald Trump, the success of the Wintel platform isn't that surprising.
Get ready to be taken to TrumpU everyone (a really funny name if you THINK about it).
-
It was in response to why someone would pay a few thousand for video games. granted, VR has far more uses as well.
I keep seeing that Falcon up there, it isn't quite worth the 1500 unless it is already moddded / expanded. I think I got mine for 800, very nice machine out of the box. Can even play MP3s due to the built in DSP. My A4000 with an 060 still struggles to do that.
Speaking of 68k, which I also love. There has been releases of Atari ST enhanced ports to the Atari Jaguar. There were some questions asking about some Amiga ports to it, but of course those are a bit more difficult due to the custom chipset, where the ST used mostly just plain 68k instructions.
Pretty impressive after all these years to be getting more Jaguar games released.
-
I am seriously looking at the X5000 and ordering one from AmigaOnTheLake. A couple of general questions... I grew up a Commodore guy, and I still have several C64's, but I never owned an Amiga. I have played a bit with emulation over the years, and own many releases of Amiga Forever. So, to my questions from a non-Amiga guy....
First, how is AmigaOS on the X5000? I believe it is still pre-release, but it looks like it must be working fairly well now....
Second, and one more generic..... for someone that has never owned a next gen Amiga... what software do people run on OS4.1? If I buy one, I would love to know what I can use the machine for. They are expensive, but they look like a lot of fun... anyway... I think that is it for now!
-
@ slygon
:hammer: my friend you get the best lurker award on this site and congrats on your 1st post joining the club with a new X5000:drink:
I can't comment on the X5000 but I would assume the latest AmigaOS4.1 on it will run as good as on my X1000 so I can attest that it's been running quite nice since installing 4.1FE, hopefully we get the much awaited small update to fix a few bug fixes when the X5K is released?
As for software to run, well you can check out amigaos.net, os4depot.net as well as tons of stuff on aminet.net. amistore.net is our online shop for OS4.1 specific programs. If you're into programming there's quite a bit of help over at amigaos.net and hyperions forum. Hollywood is getting better and better for the average Joe non programmer to get involved in making new stuff for NG and classics.
You can use alot of classic 68k apps/games using the great RunInUAE as well. Drawing/sketching and 3D with SketchBlock and Blender.
Personally I'm excited tom play the new game Tower 57 online with fellow amigans https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/514621648/tower-57
welcome back!
-
Number 1 Lurker award! I love it! :).
Yes, I have been keeping an eye on the Amiga scene for a while... but the last time I became interested in buying one, you couldn't find anything.... the X1000's were drying up (and VERY, VERY expensive), and the AmigaOne 500 line and associated boards were not for sale.....
I think I will pull the trigger and buy one. It seems like a ton of fun, a way to get back into retro computing without dealing with really old hardware (I have enough of that with my other Commodore machines), plus it seems like SOME modern abilities exist, like at least a decent browser, etc.
-
Well, I did it... I ordered my X5000. Now I wait!

awesome! i really hope you get to enjoy it as much as i have enjoyed mine. there are piles of software available, from the older 68K titles to newer ones, including commercial software (http://intuitionbase.com/static.php?section=commercial) like the enhancer pack (http://wiki.amiga.org/index.php?title=Enhancer_Software). you might find this old thread (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showpost.php?p=793313&postcount=3) useful to get some ideas, too.

Thanks to everyone else who has posted as well! I know I jumped on AmigaSociety's post.. :)
I am looking forward to using a real machine, and not relying on emulation!

Eliyahu, we get the Enhancer Pack with our purchase. Is part of the sale from AOTL. :)

Yes, it would have been nice for you if it arrived before Christmas.

I hope the rollout of the A1222 is smoother than this. Amigakit and Acube haven't even listed the X5000 yet and GGS Data are the only European dealer that currently list them as being in stock although I believe some of the others had stock and sold it already. I had hoped they were using the time during the delay of the OS4 port to build up inventory at the dealers so everyone could ship from day one. I understand there are probably financial reasons such as dealer not wanting to tie up too much money in stock they had to delay the sale of, or Amigakit not wanting to give credit/too much credit.
Hopefully with the a1222 being a lower cost board/system the 2 problems mentioned above are less of an issue and when they are announced as being available to buy, they really will be available to buy from your preferred dealer.

Hardly necessary.
Even when I buy on eBay, I don't rely on luck, I rely on a payment method I can ask for a chargeback on.

give the dude some slack eh it's Christmas after all ;-)

Good luck.
What DO you know, apparently luck isn't a factor as he IS getting his system before Christmas.
But I don't blame you for doubting, Amiga vendors can be extremely slow to ship, often difficult to contact, and ocassionally. a transaction goes sour.
So far though, the vendor has not had those issues.
AND he's in the US!
So again, that is who I am supporting.
-
Yep,
I am waiting for mine too... I also contacted them yesterday and was told that they should ship today. I am very excited!
I have been patient with Amiga on the Lake... it is a hobby business, the owner has another real business that is more important to his livelihood... and he has been very great to work with. He also had a few delays on receiving the AmigaOS registration cards..
That doesn't mean I am not anxious to get my machine! If it does indeed ship today, I will be out of town when it arrives... luckily I have someone watching my house, so I am not worried about the delivery, just that I won't get to use it until I get home... which will be January 1st! Be something fun to use when I return!

My first thought was "good luck", until I realized I'd given someone else a hard time for that lukewarm comment.
Instead, congratulation on your purchase of the most powerful AmigaOne system yet released.
-
Actually, no... after Christmas.... but hopefully New Year, around Dec 30th. If all goes as planned. :laugh1:
I plan on buying more from Aaron when the time comes. Other things on his website that have caught my eye.
I also like to buy locally, so as long as Amiga On The Lake sells what I am looking for, I plan on buying from AOTL too. If they do not, then yes I will order from the various other international dealers.
I live in a small rural area and my main shopping is in a small town. Normally costs are higher here, but I like to buy locally to support these stores, unless they gouge on prices. Then I head down the hill to the big chain store. But most my shopping is local as I don't mind paying a little extra to support local causes and stores.

I received mine from Amiga On The Lake late last week. I am on East Coast. Arron has been great to deal with and very responsive to communications. I have had other minor transactions with him as well always good. Good thing is lots of machines for him to ship and if waiting for any part can take a few more days than I am sure he would like especially this time of year. Im still trying to understand how a 2 day Amazon Prime shipping works out to 4 days...

I order about $10k in Amazon Prime stuff a year for work. Most of it comes in 1 day, even on Sundays. Of course it helps that my office is right down the street from a warehouse in one direction, and an Amazon datacenter in the other. ;)
Enjoy your X5000, hope everyone who ordered one gets theirs soon!

I live close to two Amazon distribution centers myself.
That company has a really cool relationship with the Postal Service.
And they picked the right shipper to team with, Fed Ex and UPS keep handing my shipments off to the USPS (and FedEX and UPS shipments take longer to get to me unless they are overnighted).
Frankly, I wish that companies I purchase from wouldn't use FedEx or UPS truck shipping options, because Priority Mail is faster (and often cheaper).
So much for the incredibly DUMB idea of privatizing our Postal delivery.
For that matter, since Delaware is close to New Jersey's Newegg.com warehouse, I get quick deliveries on most items ordered from them as well.
The only real excuse to use UPS is for heavy shipments (like desktop computers). There they DO offer a pricing advantage.
-
Received tracking # just now. Shows the 30th as I expected. So, hoping UPS is nice... gentle... and gets it here next Friday so I can drink booze, eat like an oinky, and play Amiga OS 4.1FE on my X5K.
Has been 5 years since I purchased my X1K (Dec 2011) and since selling it 1.5 years ago, been missing out on enjoying Amiga. Even though I was not an Amigan prior to 2010, for whatever reason, getting one again (like the X5K) is exciting. Not quite 1980/90s computer exciting but exciting never the less.
Back in the 80s/90s it all seemed to fresh. Now a-days, computing is not as exciting, but the Amiga platform has come close to bringing some of that excitement back for me.
:)

I can get behind that, when the Amiga was current I was working with other 68K hardware and still actively involved in 8 bit projects (which come to think of, I've never stopped).
But Amiga related computing can be more interesting than the sterile 'modern' appliance orient stuff I use day to day.

Interesting, when I received my X1000 in December 2012, a few days before Christmas, It took just 3 days to arrive from Cardiff, Wales, UK. Why on earth would it take more than twice as long to arrive from upstate New York ? Anyway hope you enjoy the X5000. Would be interested to know how you think it compares to your old X1000.

Could be worse, it just took about two months for a package I shipped via Priority Mail International to get to the recipient in South Africa (the USPS quotes 10 days).
Although, Wales to the US in three days is just plain remarkable.
I'm happy when I get a package shipped to Germany in under two weeks (short of being dumb enough to pay for the massive fees required to overnight ship a package).
Six days to truck ship a computer system in the middle of the holiday season?
Why would you think that was unusually long?

Because from UK to NY it was air... one day. Then UPS Ground or Fed/X ground from NY to NY is only a day or two. Has to get through customs too.
Different when it is UPS Ground all the way from NY to CA. 5 days plus Monday is holiday, Christmas, so guessing UPS is closed. So Friday it is. hehe
But AmigaKit does have great rates for shipping from UK to USA. That I can agree with.

I have my tracking number too! Same thing... the 30th.... and I agree, I hope UPS takes care of it as it moves across the country!
I won't be home until Sunday, so I expect to hear how your experience is before I get a chance to play with mine! I haven't been this excited about a computer in a while....
I have a lot to learn on the Amiga.... I just have no real direct knowledge of them.... I went right from the Commodore 64 to PC then Mac... skipped Amiga completely....... always wanted one..... now I will!

Prior to 2010, I never was an Amigan. 1980s Atari 800. 1990s Atari Mega ST. Mid 1990s and on Mac. 2010 got the Amigan bug. Still a newbie even after 5 to 6 years playing Amiga but did learn some. Wish there was a really good Amiga OS Bible but hoping the books from that europe folks that have that 4.1 Emulation book make an Amiga OS 4.1 FE book. That would be sweet.
But I know some now and can get by OK in Amiga-land. Sure you will to. ;-)

Glad to hear you guys are getting your x5000 machines soon. You will love it, I sure am. Please share with us what you think.

My AmigaOne X5000 arrived! It was delivered on the 30th, just as the tracking stated.
I was out of town until last night, and now I seem to have caught a nasty cold.... so I haven't even turned it on yet! I just barely unpacked it, everything looks fine, I hope to at least give it a "First Boot" later this evening. I am usually much more excited about stuff like this.... but this cold is kicking my butt!
@Amigasociety - Did you get yours? How is everything working for you?

Quick update: I have my X5000 plugged in and running! I am using it to type this post! I have a LOT to learn... never really been an Amiga user.... as I have stated earlier, I have just used emulators etc... but it works!
Of course... I found out that these things don't like KVM switches.... at least not the the one I have.... so it is off to buy a new monitor and speakers for it tomorrow...

I did. UPS beat it up and broke the bezel on the front of the case. Working with AOTL on a claim for UPS. AOTL was cool and said he would just take care of my case issue and deal with UPS on the backside. That was cool.
System cables inside were unplugged on mine so was dead as a door-nail when I went to boot. Opened her up and saw power button and led cables were unplugged. As noted the case was damaged and the box was a bit beat up so maybe cables came undone during that ordeal. Plugged them back in and I had life.
Networking card is issue I am working on now. Not sure what has happened but the NIC does not stay working after a reboot. I posted my issue over on Hyperion. Maybe the NIC is bad?
So for now ordered a new 8169 based NIC and will try a different one as someone else I knew had same type of issue and he replaced his card and was online. Hoping that cures my issue too.
So a little ruff for my X5K start but will get things sorted out in time.
Glad your X5K is working well Slygon. I am guessing your NIC is the same as mine. Mine just has odd problem of not liking a reboot even though Internet Prefs are all the same and were saved.
Take care. TJ

This us dealer is new and im sure doesnt have a lot of resources. I dont think you guys realize that amigakit is a relatively big business in comparison.

I will have to test the network issue tomorrow. When I fired up the system, I did not have network support. I figured out how to add it, and it worked fine. I then went and tried the amiupdate tool, and the system crashed.... So I just turned it off...I will see if everything works when I fire it back up tomorrow!
@Amigasociety, sorry you had damage issues... my box was a bit beat up, but everything inside was fine. I did unseat all of the cards and put them back in before I powered it on... I have shipped too many tower computers in my day to know that they don't like to be shipped..... my cables were all fine though... I did check them to be sure....

Have fun with your awesome machine. I played with an x5000 at amiwest its pretty awesome. I think AOL needs to really really package these things extra careful, especially with ups which has no external oversight like USPS
btw its cool you dont know much about amiga NG we are here to help! No question is stupid so ask us for anything :)

Ugh, sorry to hear that! I always say, whenever shipping any sort of stuff like this, if it were me I'd use about 1,000 feet of bubble wrap. No such thing as too much, lol. ;)
Hope you're able to get everything resolved!

Where did you find 8169 boards?
-
Where did you find 8169 boards?
Amazon. Its a rtl8169sc chipset based NIC.
Buddy of mine that also just purchased an X5K purchased the same card, tested, and sold the issue we were both having.
So I will see if it cures mine too.

If that card works, can you please post a link or NIC brand/model info? I am seriously considering getting an AmigaOne X5000 and start writing programs for it. After 20+ years of DOS,Windows,Web and database programming, I want to work on something completely different!

Well Ken Lester is already using this card. So it should but I hope to know by tonight as my card supposed to be delivered today.
Thing is the card that came with my X5K, a 8139 based, should be working too. They work for Aaron's X5K. Not sure if anyone else is having my issue or not. Ken Lester was and he had a different 8139 than I.
Could be my 8139 is just a bad card. These cards are uber cheap these days so I would bet some are just bad. I made a joke that it seems some of the NICs are from bubble gum machines they are so cheap. :hammer:
Hoping this Protronix that I have coming does the job!

And of course you have configured your X5000 to use this card instead of the integrated NIC on the motherboard?

Yes. On-Board Ethernet does not work with Amiga OS. :)

Good, thats why I asked.

OK, I wanted to update everyone. My network card that shipped with my X5000 seems to work just fine.... I have not had any issues... at least in the VERY limited use I have had with the machine.... I can shut it off, reboot, everything, and networking comes back up.
Now, I just need to learn how to actually use it.... once I sit down for more than 10 minutes at a time, I plan to try a clean install of the OS, just for fun, and then try to learn a few things...
How is everything else working on yours @Amigasociety?

Installing of my new Protronix NIC solved my network issue so can only guess since Slygon's NIC is working, my AOTL installed NIC must be a defective one. The new Protronix 8169 based 10/100/1000 NIC plugged in and worked right away.
Registered my Amiga OS at Hyperion and my Enhancer at A-Eon and downloading updates as we speak.
Just have to get my damaged case rectified and then I should be at 100%. Guess I will have AOTL send me a new 8139 too since mine appears bad. Maybe just have as back-up. Would be nice though that we can scrap these NIC and get to use the on-board ethernet one day soonly.
Anyway, getting my X5K built up the way I like it.

@Amigasociety
Did you do a clean install of AmigaOS, or leave it the way it was from AOTL? Also, is there any reason to install the official Update 1? It obviously just came out.... but it sounds like there is nothing new in it for X5000 users.... but I know our OS is considered a Pre-Release.....
Now I need to figure out what browser to use.... The two default ones are fairly old.... I know new ones exist..... now I need to find them.....

X5000's already have Update 1 installed.
download latest Odyssey for OS4.1 as that's the best we got right now.

Thanks klx300r! I will look for the Odyssey browser!

Yes, did a re-partition to sizes I like and re-install.
Would not have done it right away but since my NIC was not working, and figured could be an OS issue, I decided to pull the trigger and do a fresh install.
Hyperion is saying we don't need to update so I am just using what AOTL sent me on CD.
For sure Odyssey 1.23r4 is the best thing to get.

It is Amazing to see Amiga Shop in 2017!
When I came back from Ireland in 2005, I was Amazed to have a local Amiga Shop where I lived (Marseille). But 2017... that one of the thing explaining why I'm still around.

nope. update 1 contains the same components as our X5000 installations and doesn't contain the X5000-specific kickstart modules we need. you already are up-to-date! :)

Is The X5000 splash screen include the pre release text as seen on HP video?
Under Classic version there's no such text.

Thanks for all of the feedback!
I will do a clean install today... I like to know how everything works... That is usually a good first step... If I remember correctly... nothing too weird about installing OS 4.1... but then again, I have only ever tried on an emulator...... I guess I will see how this goes!
I know Amigasociety had shipping damage.... which is never fun.... and a bad network card (I think he is correct... these things are probably super cheap with poor quality control... hopefully we can use the onboard networking someday soon....) but I have had an overall great experience with Amiga On The Lake. I always hate shipping tower computers.... I would almost prefer to get the kit sent to me in parts, and I build it.... I think it is safer....
As for the splash screen, the initial boot screen does have a nice AmigaOne X5000 logo on it... but the OS screen (until you change it) does still have the pre-release designation.... that is why I was wondering if we needed to update... but it sounds like that is not only not needed, but it won't work anyway as our X5000 build is still a bit unique.
Thanks again!
