Title: Vampire 2 A500 - Is the 68000 required?
Post by: nac on September 02, 2016, 02:29:26 PM
Does anyone know if the Vampire 2 for the A500 will require the 68000 CPU to be plugged into it?

My A500+ currently has a Viper 520CD which doesnt require the 68000 and I sold the previous accelerator I used which was an M-Tec 68020-i which did require the CPU to be plugged in. Thing is, I cannot find the 68000 CPU and while I cannot believe I was soooo stupid (though I do have my moments) I wonder if I sold the M-Tec 68020-i with the CPU still attached.

If the Vampire 2 does need it then it looks like I will need to find a CPU or buy a cheap A500 and remove its chip.

Nope, even better you need to take the 68000 cpu out to fit the vampire into the CPU socket.

Yep, Just be take care in inserting the vampire the pins on those sockets are fragile.
Even better ffor A2000 users....when using the A2000 there is an adapter card for the A2000 cpu slot if you happen to have a system with battery damage that hits too close to home on the 68000 cpu socket and are worried about damaging that socket during install due to unseen corrosion. Those Vampire kids thought of everything!

Yeah, have experience on how fragile (bendy) those pins are. Had to straighten one in the past.

I've got another question regarding the 68000 cpu.  Is there a fall back mode?

If so, does the fpga do the emulation or would the original cpu then be needed?

If it is needed, where would you stick it given the IDE connection is right in the middle of where the 68000 would be!
