Title: What turbo card it is?
Post by: Jasper80 on July 22, 2016, 03:08:58 AM
Few years back, I bought an Amiga 1200 from some scene guy. It was in so bad condition, dirty, yellow and with some Prodigy stickers (?). Inside there was a memory extension. I was going to get a HDD for it back then. I played it for few times on it's floppy. Recently I opened again and checked its card. It turned out to be a 040 Turbo card! It gives me 22 Mips in sysinfo, more than A4000! :laugh1:
I noticed it heats a lot. Perhaps I should get some fan for it.

Is that like old blizzard? There is no any markings. If I will put a cooling fan on it, how should I connect it to the power?

Nice!  Looks like some variation of an Apollo 1240, with its battery removed.  Those guys went through about a million different design iterations.  Check it out here:

Hard to make out the oscillator from your photo but I'd guess you have a 33MHz model.

Also that link appears to show how to attach a fan, just connect it to the points shown in the photo.  Note that you may be unable to close your trapdoor slot if the fan is on the bottom, but plenty of folks leave that open, or lift the entire system up on larger feet (for better airflow, etc.).  Good find!  :)

And was sold under different brands like Magnum and Winner at least.

Looks like someone's put a coin cell holder/battery on the reverse side. Putting a fan on this card should be no problem as the CPU faces up, so no worries of clearance.

Can you tell us the oscillator speed? Also what speed is your CPU rated at? It should tell you on the CPU (ie XC68040RC33).

The card is 68060 upgradable too, should you desire further down the line. 68060's cost around £80-£100, plus you'd need a voltage converter board for it, plus the cost of someone to do the work (if you can find someone).

Any 68040 is fast though, much faster than the fastest 68030's. You have a nice card, and I know that because I have one. :)

Where's the Boot ROM gone?! Hmmm... maybe yours is different then if it works without that. :hammer:

Looks like it's soldered to the other side of the board.

I can make it faster? 68060? Anybody here is able to do it? I live in US.

I'll take a screen from sys info.

I wish my 4Mb memory expansion become 040/33Mhz... ;)

Huh.  Somebody's definitely been modding that board already.  But in any case, yes, certainly upgradable!

A quick google search turns up multiple hits, including a thread on Amibay from a guy offering the upgrade service, etc.

I wonder if Acill would be interested in offering that service, along with all the other repairs he does, also?  ;)  http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=70747

That two pin connector near the CPU is for powering a fan (previous owner opted for a heat sink instead).

Might be worthwhile downloading and running WhichAmiga, then you'll see exactly what CPU you have plus MHz it's running at:

Anybody knows what type of memory it takes, in case if I want to expand it to 128MB?

72-pin SIMM.  The faster the better (I'd look for 60n's).  May need single sided for proper fit in a desktop chassis.  I think there's an optional second slot that can be fitted on the backside.
