contact pads were badly rusted so question is what I can I put on them to make sure the rust doesn't come back?? grease, spray lube??
-
I spray WD-40 on everything, but that's not necessarily a good idea.
This, maybe?

the black thing is graphite, you need something conductive. I've used liquid silver with not much success, its probably better to try liquid graphite. both are not cheap.
-
WD and a clean cloth - get those pads clean and don't forget to clean the thingy bob which contacts the pads (also with WD).
-
I think wd, contact cleaner or similar would just remove more graphite, making it worse.

WD doesn't hurt anything in my experience. Joypad buttons, remote control buttons, rubber, pots, switches...they all LOVE WD-40. Everything loves WD-40!

WD40 probably won't hurt any - and will leave a thin film of oil to protect from further corrosion. But to actually clean electronics and get something that has a bad contact working good again, like say potentiometers, buttons and similar electro-mechanical devices, you want a specialist contact-cleaner.
Now, WD40 - the company - do sell this, link here (http://wd40specialist.com/products/contact-cleaner/). I'm sure similar products from other brands (CRC for instance) will do just as well.

guys my experience with WD-40 is that it's greasy and attracts alot of dust/dirt over time

Contact cleaner and pots don't mix (haven't tried WD's version). It'll work crackle free for a short while, but the crackles then return worse than ever! WD-40 fixes the crackles and stops crackles returning. This is my experience, but I'd never dream of spraying anything else into a pot or switch.

ok damn this keyboard work taking alot longer than I thought so anyhow good news is that the non working keys are working again with a good cleaning and some WD-40 BUT problem is I have to press quite hard to make contact so next step is to tear down again and put some of that graphite paste orange was talking about.
Looks like the cleaning of the rust wore down quite a bit of the contact pads
-
have you checked the other end?

Cleaning them has revealed the wear on them no doubt.

ya they seem fine it's the pads on the main board that are the issue

yup for sure
