Title: .RAR files
Post by: punkyclown on April 27, 2016, 12:53:03 AM
Hi All, Can someone please explain what to use to extract, or load or run files with .rar extension.  Something I am
completely unfamiliar with.
Thank you
Brad Hansen

I use 7zip from here: http://www.7-zip.org/

Works great, opens almost everything.

WinRAR.

I never understood why people need separate applications to use .zip files, the ability to open and save as .zip has been built into every OS since Windows XP.  ;)

But WinRAR is worth it.  Pro-tip:  It can also open Amiga .lha archives.  :D

So can 7-Zip. But I rather think the question implied "...on an Amiga". In which case xadmaster with my RAR plugin (http://www.unsatisfactorysoftware.co.uk/download.php?file=xad_rar), or a fairly recent version of UnRAR (check Aminet) are the only options.

Just a sidetrack FYI, if anyone still uses a Mac PPC like I do, here's a great little UnRAR (universal binary) program for OSX 10.5.8. :)

7zip isn't just for zip files. It has it's own compression routines, and compresses better than rar and zip. It also handles a multitude of archive formats, and is open source.
