Title: SSD on Amiga 4000
Post by: Macabre on March 19, 2016, 03:22:22 PM
Hi,

I recently bought a IDE to SATA adapter (delock). I want to replace the old IDE drive in my amiga 4000.

I tested this with a standard laptop SATA drive and its works like a charm. But since 500gb is bit of overkill, i tried a 128gb SSD.

HDToolbox (OS3.9) seem to work, i can initialize the drive, and i can make partitions.
When i make a partition bootable, my amiga wont start, HDD led stays lit after some time. I think it tries to read the partition info since i hear the amiga load from disk.

When i dont make a partition bootable, i can boot from USB on my deneb (wich contains a copy of my WB3.9 partition ;)
I can format, but it go's wrong when i want to read or write to the SSD.

Can this be the type of SSD used? The SSD i used is an Intenso 128gb.

I had exactly the same issue with my 1200 + Sata adapter...

I've never heard of "Intenso" so I googled it. Seems like a very off-market / small brand. Dunno. Wonder if you'd have better luck with a more reputable product? Try throwing a Samsung in there or something. Since you already have the adapter set up, what could it hurt, right? ;)

I had the same issue.  I also bought an IDE 2.5 inch 128gb SSD, with the 40pin to 44pin adapter, I could never get the 4000 to detect it.  It works flawlessly on my Atari Falcon though.

I still have the SATA one that did the same thing, though it is a Patriot brand, if I recall.

The one in the Falcon is http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0091T4ZWU?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=od_aui_detailpages00

I wonder if it'd work great in an A1200.

I just tried some onther HD's to, same story ;(

These were Thosiba SATA and a samsung SSD.
Only an old laptop sata works, and this one is pretty old and it makes a wierd sound. So i dont trust this drive anymore..

At the moment i preparing an IDE to SD adapter. Its not the fastest method, but atleast i now have a full backup, and it works ;) But only 2,8 mb/s according to sysinfo. But i think the standard IDE doesnt go any faster.

Just tried it on my MSX turbo-r and (Sunrse DE) and it works flawless, but cant use a slave.

I think i give it a try on my buddha and/or tandem IDE controller.  This can take a while, there "some where" on my attic with a lot of other hardware ;)

I used a Samsung 840 120GB SSD on an Elbox FastATA Zorro MkIV with Mediator, Radeon 9200, Spider, CyberStorm 060/50 MKII with around 32O MB total fastram.

I also had a CF-card and a normal 2,3" mechanical harddrive connected, but theSSD was set as boot drive and with the highest bootpri.

What i noticed though, was that if i were to remove the other "drives" and let the SSD be connected alone, it sometimes wouldn't boot.

When that's said though, i had a rather complex configuration with Remul, softkicking, updated and maybe not so stable and official libs, devs, handlers, etc...

Make sure you have the correct scsi.device and 040/060 libraries, take one step at a time, and you should be fine. :-)

I have a similar set up to that Shamron, I am pretty sure I'd  gotten that SSD to boot once or twice, but then it wouldn't after that.  Then again my Cyberstorm MK1 bit the dust, and I haven't spent much time re-installing my Amiga to get it working again with the A3640 connected to the 060.  Last time I tried, once I installed Picasso, it gives me errors.
