Title: How to read Amiga 880k disks on AppleIIGS?
Post by: tonyvdb on February 29, 2016, 04:13:15 PM
As the title says Im wondering if there is a way to read Amiga formatted 880k disks on an Apple IIGS? I want to transfer Game files from my PC over tho the Amiga then put those files on a 880k disk and then read them on the Apple. Is this possible?

Why go via Amiga?

I don't understand what you're trying to do, but if you just want to transfer files all three machines should be able to read PC DD 720kb disks (with appropriate software).

Ah, and this is the native format of the Apple II? I honestly do not know what formatting/filesystem the Apple II used.

so you can get a PC 3.5" drive to read/write DD disks?
I simply want to get the "disk" images of old Apple games to work on the Apple.

AFAIK Apple has a 800K disk format. Neither 880K nor 720K, but 800K.

Only with a HD drive it can read 1440K disks (same sector format as PC HD floppies but Mac file system).

IIRC with ShapeShifter an Amiga is able to read and write 800K disks, but I doubt that an Apple can be made to read 880K disks.

So, I can format an DD 880k disk to a 800k disk on the Amiga?

Possibly.  With Shapeshifter.

If I understand correctly, you have some Apple IIgs disk images on your PC.  And you're trying to transfer them to the Apple, by using the Amiga as an intermediary?

As an alternative, would it be possible to zip them on the PC to something small enough to fit on a 720kb disk, then transfer them directly to the Apple, and un-zip them back to 800k size and write them onto disks that way?  Thus taking the Amiga out of the equation?

AFAIK the Apple should have no problems reading PC double density format disks (720kb), with appropriate software.

You might have better luck asking this question on an Apple forum, I'm sure people there ask "how to transfer from a PC" all the time.

Yes, thats correct.

Im going to try some old 800k disks ive found and see if my one PC that has a floppy drive will read them and then I wont need the Amiga at all.

I don't think anyone understands why you need your Amiga in this problem.  http://www.whatisthe2gs.apple2.org.za/faq/

I suspect that the only way an amiga would help, is if you had a Sybil, catweasel, amax or crossmac and an apple drive, which would allows you to read/write 800k mac disks. I'm assuming that the apple2gs used the same drives as the mac (which are clv instead of the amiga and pc cav) so that you could transfer documents between them.

Kryoflux seems to support it.

Or you could get an old mac

Or if you want a nicer experience altogether on the apple 2 gs then get one of these

No, a PC cannot read Amiga disks. Decoding and encoding of the disk is directly done by hardware, in the south bridge, and hence, the format is fixed to the PC format. For the amiga, decoding is done by software.  Nevertheless, while I do not know for the IIGS floppies, at least Mac floppies cannot be read by the Amiga either. The problem is here that the Mac varies the rotation speed between tracks to fit more data on the disk, i.e. it operates at constant head velocity instead of constant angular speed. The latter is used at the PC and the Amiga.

afair with cross mac you could read low density mac floippies on amiga as you could read the pc formatted ones with cross dos.

In case people don't realize, the machine in question, Apple IIGS, is _not_ a Macintosh.

Albedo (Myriad game) use a Mac drive which is IIRC similar or the same  as the IIGS to make the protection for the game. They got access to the  drive documentation to do so. I suppose that it's possible but you need  the software to do so.
