Title: apollo 03 turbo mk2 crystal soldering issue

Hi

I have a apollo turbo 1230 mk2 accelerator card that i have changed the crystal from a 25mhz to a 40 mhz and one of the holes in the pcb board where the crystal goes as solder missing so there is no contact with the board is their any other way of making contact otherwise the machine will crash when using workbench after a period of time any ideas would be gratefull.

Maybe its memory timing issues or bus speed? Try double the clock instead to 50mhz.

Hi

There is nothing there to solder the one of the legs off the crystal to the board thats whats causing the system to crash but just need info as to see if i can solder the leg onto anything alternative just to get a connection.  My blizzard runs fine no problems.

You may need a schematic of the board to find out where the other end of that pin/trace is located. Shouldn't be too hard to fix if you can find that out. Too bad they didn't socket those things. :(  Good luck!

Was the 25MHz oscillator soldered in to the sockets? I used to have one of these cards and mine wasn't soldered in at all - you could pull the oscillator out and back in again quite easily. Hmm...maybe just one of the legs were soldered...was 12 years ago.
So, does it just need solder or is one of the sockets missing? I'm assuming you have a soldering iron and some solder?

Hi

It did have a 25mhz crystal but when i removed it and soldered the 40mhz into the holes one hole was empty and nothing to solder onto so i assume that's making the card crash. i can play games for a bit and do a system info check no problems.

Is your new oscillator soldered in place now then? If not can you remove it so we can see what the oscillator plugs into? Looks like there's a pad missing though or something.

Mike has it right. If you know where the trace goes you can "bridge" it with a small wire, other than that your not working.

Just check what that pin on the oscillator does,clock,+5v or gnd etc.. once you know that you can connect it up with a jumper.

The solderpad that is missing is for pin 1 on the oscillator and pin 1 is usually not connected on them so you should be good (if the CPU doesn't get a clock it wouldn't get as far as to Workbench). From experience I'd also say memory issue or overheating issue so would put some heatsinks on the FPU and CPU and use a simm with faster timing 60ns or even 50ns if you can find one.
