Title: Dam it ive forgot !!
Post by: jimmyboy on February 24, 2016, 10:29:30 PM
I feel like ive been mind wiped :/

Trying to setup my A1200T/BPPC and ive forgot how to do it lol.
I remember a thread on one of these amiga boards a guide on how to setup my A1200T but i cant find it. Ive also got a tv card to go into the tower now to try and get whdload to work on it.

I know ive got to setup
bppcfix ?
warpos 4 then 5.1 ?
mediator setup cd ?
Boing bag updates 1 to 4 ?
voodoo picasa setup ?

No idea on the order or if im missing a step.
Ive got as far as raw 3.9 with fastata installed.

I will keep googling.
Any help appreciated.

Not owning all those components I'd just guess at the correct order, but:

1:  OS3.9 + BB1-4
2:  Mediator setup
3:  Voodoo Picassa96 setup
4:  BPPCfix (whatever that is?)
5:  WarpOS

Somewhere in there you'll probably also want to throw in your network stack.  Probably at the end, after you get your Mediator and NIC recognized.  ;)

I finished playing as my interests went elsewhere
And I can't remember when or where or how
And I backed up every file you and I have ever made

But when I plug this like this
And when I install this like that
It was lost long ago but it's all coming back to me

...

:biglaugh:

BlizzardPPCfix is not needed anymore with actual WarpOS! It is included there with the checkmark "earlyTerm" and set to Terminator2

Also install ppcemulibs which can be found on aminet! This allows you to use 99% of PowerUP software inside WarpOS :D

@Oldscool_Mike
BlizzardPPCFix kicks Phase5 ppc.libary (which is in the ROM) out of the system and allows usage of WarpOS ppc.library:)

Are you sure? Not 1 guide says that. even guides from the last few years.

UPDATE:

I tried different Teminator settings in warpos prefs.............no joy

OS3.9 clean install from making a boot disk -- works
Installed fastata -- works
Installed boingbag 1 -- works
Installed boingbag 2 intermediate including rom update -- failed
Installed boingbag 2 easy auto install -- errors but booted
Installed boingbag 3+4 -- errors and freezes on desktop before background pic loads
Installed bppcfix boots with random errors with the odd crash

looked in the startup file after updates and im not sure if its right.
When installing warpos from os3.9 cd which one am i supposed to install ?

Any help appreciated.

I've also had this problem several times. I think i removed div stuff from the setpatch and / or skipromupdate lines, then readded one and one until i found which one screwed me over.

I think it might help to make sure you get the updated and correct version of scsi.device and make sure you got the correct 040 / 060 libs.

I have both a 1200 and a 4000 with 060/mediator/radeon 9200/rtl8139/sb128/spider and i got it all working somehow, but i fear pulling it out now as i know it need a reinstall and i need to re-learn everything.

I also used remul to softkick and update my libs and devs, but yeah... 2 years ago.

I would love a guide, at least for the first part, concerning installing os and mediator with cards. Perhaps i'll do it someday myself. :-P

Nice to hear I'm not the only one with senility.
Should I install the rom update in boing bag 2? Anyone?

Found this which helps a bit

Is this guide correct? Or have things changed?

that is quite a good guide.

I wrote a set up guide for myself some years ago, that roughly contains these steps:

1. os3.9 + bb's (consider dual boot for os4.x while at it)
2. cybergraphx (I think 4.3 rc5 is latest, not sure)
3. set up graphics card and its resolutions
4. warpup (5.1, IIRC)
5. bppcfix or blizkick (you need a reboot anyway for OS3.9, so you might aswell use blizkick)
6. ppclibemu
7. warp3d (4.2 IIRC)
8. cybergl, stormmesa
9. set up right env vars and options for warpos, monitor driver and cgx
10. ordinary workbench enhancing stuff like MUI, diropus, reqtools, un/archivers, browsers, rtgmaster, xpkmaster, ixemul, kingcon, scout, swazinfo, visualprefs, ghosty, mcp etc.

hope this helps.

As I'm sure someone else will say, you'd get better $ for it if you split it up.  Although I don't know why you're completely giving up on the project.  Break it down into smaller pieces and take it one step at a time.  Alternatively, an A1200 by itself is perfectly enjoyable, do you really need the PPC card, Mediator, Voodoo, and all the extra stuff that make it such a complicated project?  ;)

Install BB1 with rom update, skip rom update BB2.
Do not install BB3/4 this time, I have had just problems with them. It is very annoying tryin to figure out multiple problems, for non booting machine. I you wan't them, install them manually.

Ugh, I really dislike this kind of comment.  Just because *you* had problems, doesn't mean there's not thousands of people out there who've been able to install them successfully.  BB2 in particular contains many important fixes to the OS that someone who wants to run a modern (-ish) AmigaOS will need.  With that kind of attitude, might as well just say to he*&% with 3.9 altogether, and stick with 1.3.  :angryfire:

Okay, I'll get off my soapbox now.  Cheers!  :)

I have tried all kinds of different ways of setting it up. I have had it running with all the updates and mediator running, then i changed something and it all went wrong. I cant even remember how i got to that point. I forgot how much of a pain in the ass these machines can be to setup. The original guide i had was on my computer and i had a printed copy which i had in my hands just after xmas grrrr. Spending 140 hours on it googling and setting up and not getting very far. I wanted 3.9+ updates and a nice WHDload setup running either through the TV card or the voodoo. Maybe some other nice unique apps aswell. But it aint gonna happen.

No, Mike. Please enlighten me (and probably multiple others)..

I've tried installing in this order on at least the following machines:

Plain A1200 with 2.5"HD well below the max cap limit and CD-rom with IDEFix sw.
Plain A1200 with CF-adaptor. Tried with both 512MB, 2GB, 4GB CF cards and CD-rom with IDEFix sw.

Both of the above tried with both a plain 8BM exp, Blizzard 1230 MK-III@50MHz with 64MB ram and a Blizzard 1260@50MHz with 64MB ram (with proper libs ofc)

A4000D with 3.5"HD well below max cap limit and CD-rom on mobo IDE with IDEFix sw.
A4000D with 3,5"HD well below max cap limit and CD-rom on FastATA 4000 MK-VI CF/SATA with FastATA driver from Elbox

Both of the above tried with both 8MB mobo ram + 3640, and a Cyberstorm MK-II 060@50MHz with 128MB ram (with proper libs ofc)

In later tries, i got the OS3.9 Emergency Disk to work, but if that fails, i start with installing WB3.1, then either IDEFix or FastATA driver. I then restart (tried both warm/cold) and start installing OS3.9.

I then install BoingBag#1, reboots as told (tried both warm/cold), then install BoingBag#2.

Here i get the dreaded question; "Do you want to install ROM update?" and i've tried both yes and no. If i say "yes", i usually need to boot withough Startup-Sequence and "Skipromupdates" scsi.device and/or some others. I can't really remember right now, but i get it working, not knowing if i'm getting the most optimal system/updates or not.

I've tried to play with Remul(?), following Mfilos's guide and making my own softkickable KickStart with updated libs, devs and handlers, and i somehow get it working, sometimes it need a reboot or 2... or 3...

But when i install BoingBag#3 and 4... (i ofc tried that before installing BB#3 and 4, but it doesn't matter... BB#3 and 4 really gives me a lot to work with (correct and blindly change Startup-Sequence until it works. Somewhat).

I know there are as many Amiga Configurations out there as there are users, but i wish there was a common "platform" or "base" and "fail-safe" install of the BoingBags that would work on all non-expanded Amigas (except memoryexpansions ofc)

The variables could be changed later, 060CPU, Mediator, GFXcard, Spider, Soundcard, Network, FastATA, etc. These are all hardware that can be installed afterwards anyways. And the 060 libs are easy to copy over in Shell, even if you install with it inserted. Same with scsi.device.

So, i'm not saying the BoingBags suck and that the creators should pick up knitting instead, i am very thankful for ANY effort regarding Amiga, but surely there are more people having the same issues with this and a stickied guide would be awesome. :-)

I created a video years ago.  It's in two parts on YouTube and pretty rambling.  Also it had been a while since I'd done it, and I made a few "rookie mistakes", like forgetting to check the "bootable" box on my Workbench partition.  I should probably redo it.  But here you go.  ;)

In any case, I promise you it works.  Look at my sig.  ;)

It's a lovely setup you have there (once installed correctly). It would be a great shame to let that lot go as a setup like yours is not easy to come by. I hope you manage to get it all configured in the end.

Perhaps start again and let us know the error / message you get and at what point so that someone is given the chance to help you. Once that error is fixed, let us know the next one and so on.

I don't have any experience with graphics cards or mediator or ppc, but plenty do and they would be happy to help you I'm sure.

You know the hardware is good... Let's get the software to the same level too!
