Title: Looking forward to vampire A1200
Post by: amiga-penn-wchester on February 04, 2016, 06:05:01 AM
Hope we get a vamp A1200 at some point. I was looking at some backups of my old A1200T/060/PPC@240 (sold years ago)... and would like to relive the magic.

I would also love to get my hands on a Vampire 1200.

But reality is that they still have a very big waiting list for the Vampire 600, and just a couple of guys building them, and then there is the Vampire 500 waiting list right after that, so this will take very long :(

I think the fact of a long waiting list is positive, it shows people are buying it

id like a vampire 1200 or even a vampire 4000 and i completely dont mind waiting for these become eventually available while 600 users are being served at whatever pace is possible to handle for the developers. you can still use amiga hardware there is in the meantime. you can even prepare a bit better software base in anticipation of returning higher end 68k popularity without needing fpga core at hand just immediately.

The problem is that in the world, seasons occur in different times of the year depending on your location, so I havent got the slightest idea in what it translates to where I live or even what the person who told that phrase was referring to, as I dont know where he/she lives.

PS: Right now I am in the middle of the summer season.

I hope there could be Vampire A1200 that works with Mediator and/or A1200 Reloaded...

For A600 and A500 it is not that important IMO.

Minimig was a fan project, picked up by Acube, so perhaps there could be a similar future for Vampire?

Well, Jens could sell good quantity of A1200 if they are compatible with the Vampire.
The old A1200's are prone to die eventually, so a replacement might on peoples mind.

The whole point of buying directly is to keep prices down.
Why would I want part of what I'm paying to  going to Jens?

After all, he  has spent years claiming to have re-engineered Amiga core components with similar parts only to claim that he couldn't release anything without an OS license.
And now he has an OS license.

Just watched the review.

FPGA is the future of Amiga, not PPC, which along with ColdFire is laughably expensive for the few native programs available for it. This looks to be pretty much plug and play like any other 68K accelerator. :) When the FPU is activated, it will run even faster. *Bravo*, Majsta and the Apollo guys! I can't wait for the 1200 and 4000 Vampires. ^^

An A2000 workstation should have at least 128Mb mem and support many Zorro cards. Don't know that the 500 version will do this. It really should go in the Expansion slot anyway.

I'll be in line for that right away!

PS: reaaly should have a SATA controller with proper DMA also.

Yeah, I know, but can you imagine the ugly socket adapter for that?
I'll just wait unit they build a similar board with a DIP arrangement.

DMA SATA via Zorro II?
You need to take a look at the maximum transfer rates of both of those to get an idea of how bad that would be.

How about SATA support via a controller chip connected directly to the FPGA?

Exactly! Add MMU and FPU functions please, its fast Enough it wont matter if cut down a bit anyway.

The Zorro support is for sound, High speed serial/parallel card and maybe USB.

Its not just the Amiga way.
One time, I spent a week slowly modifying the keyboard matrix of a Tandy Model 4P keyboard so I could fit it in a Color Computer 3 case (just to have the numeric pad).

And the mods on my Atari 130XE are ridiculous.

Hacker do some weird sh*t sometimes.

So from what I have read, the A1200 version will take on the form of a normal CPU slot expansion, not the over-the-chip type like the A600.

Has anyone heard about what other features may be possible with the A1200 version?
Title: Re: Looking forward to vampire A1200

Initially I expect the A1200 to be a standard V600 level Vampire, but there is questions/considerations of a high spec version aswell.
I should probably be careful about making too many claims, because the Apollo Team is constantly developing, so specs might change based on feedback.

Kipper2k did make a thread asking for feedback about specs going forward;

What I don't understand is that nobody ever build something like a "ACAcd32", an adapter that sits on the CD32 expansion board and that adapts it into a standard A1200 expansion slot... That would open up so many possibilities...

CD32's a console, man.  What doesn't it do that you need the equivalent of a 200-300mhz 68060 for?  You're not going to use it as a daily driver.

I hope this will be done this way (if ever). People have Zorro/Mediator with many, many expansions already attached to this computers.

I really would be super happy to get "060" with 120 MIPS for my A1200 :) for $300. I think we all would be super happy :) and I really thing this is best solution to use for A1200.

I wish they'd make a board with just the chip, SD reader and a big I/O block or two and make the pinout for the I/O available.  It would allow others to make carrier boards for A4000 and CD32 versions.
It would also be good for the standalone system because already some people want ITX and others want one to fit their existing A1200 case.

That's a big part of the appeal for me too.  I have a mint A4000 keyboard here.  I wish I'd got an SX32 Pro when Eyetech were selling them for under £200.

Yes I really hope the Vampire A1200 will be compatible with the Mediator busboards, but I have some doubts though. This is because the somewhat "creative" solutions Elbox have done with the Mediator.

Vampire is no joke to me, my v600 is very fast and works like a charm.
It has very fast DDR2 memory and with upcoming gold 2 core memory speed will be even faster.
Solder quality will improve as they are now being made professionally instead of semi hand soldered.
And with the ACA series of cards you do not get RTG gfx, i think this is a killer bonus feature with vampire, i cannot stand looking at ECS or AGA for desktop use.
Once the FPU is implemented on the Apollo core I cannot see any reason why i would want to go back to a 68060.

Will be buying the A1200 Vampire for sure, it will be even faster then the current Vampires.
