Title: Amiga keyboard; use QWERTZ as QWERTY
Post by: gbraad on February 02, 2016, 04:32:13 PM
I have an old QWERTZ (German) keyboard for an A1200. How is it possible to use this as a regular QWERTY keyboard?

I haven't tried it yet, but I expect the matrix to be different. So just replacing keycaps would likely not be enough... or am I wrong? The idea is to use it inside a Keyrah setup.

Yes. The matrix is identical, and the key codes are identical - they are indexed by position and not by the character they generate. You just have two extra keys, one cut out from the left side of the Return key, one cut out from the right side of the left Shift key. You only need to pick the right keymap from Preferences, that's all (and swap the keys, if you like).

Swapping keycaps such as Z and Y within the current set wont work well as the rows have different profiles. If you can find the appropriate keycaps from a broken Amiga keyboard for example you can use them with the appropriate keymap selected. Hopefully http://www.a1200.net/ (http://www.a1200.net/) will run a successful kickstarter for new keycaps soon.
