Title: A508IDE and preparing for it.. :-)
Post by: TheMagicM on January 12, 2016, 09:56:38 PM
So I'll be getting the A508IDE in the mail.  Here's where I'm at.   I USED to have alot of Amiga's.  Gave away practically every one to people who were Amiga fanatics and sold some others.  "WinUAE is bad ass..who need a real Amiga!".  I went by that for years.  For the most part its true.  You can do anything but you wont have the actual feel of an Amiga.   I have tons of software in adf format and lha format.  Fine and dandy, but I want to have actual hardware.

On the agenda is this.  I have an A500, A508IDE w/8mb ram on its way and already have an Indivision ECS (needs to be flashed also).   Is it possible to build a booting CF card with WB 2.1 and plug it into the A508IDE so that when I power it up, "it just works" ?

I have the following CF cards:

1 Hitachi Microdrive 4gb (actually a mini HD..a moving platter..lol)  *old...been around*
1 SanDisk UltraII 1gb *used, dont know how much usage*
1 Kingston 8GB  *new*

Should I use the Kingston 8gb?  Will it work with the A508IDE?
I have a CF --> USB adapter, I'm assuming I can get WinUAE to recognize it and format/install WB 2.1 on it?

EDIT:  Looks like VirtualBox in linux cannot see the CF-->USB adapter so I cant build it this way.  MorphOS can see it though..
EDIT #2:  Got a Win 7 laptop now.. I'll see if WinUAE can see the CF/USB adapter.

Yes, and it's more convenient too than setting up on a real Amiga.
This thread will I'm sure be of help to you:

http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=59560 (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=59560)

You should be able to use either of those drives you have. KS2/WB2 is what I use on my A600 with a 40GB Hitachi HDD, so larger than 8GB is fine as long as you use the updated scsi.device.

Then again, 4GB is overkill for most people, so perhaps to keep things ultra simple just go with the 4GB.

I went thru that thread but have issues.

Did the diskpart, clear etc..  Set the device to uaehf.device and in WinUAE I have it set to "UAE" for the hard drive.  When I go to hdtoolbox I see the interface as scsi, but my only valid option is Change Drive Type and thats it.  I cannot partition it in HDToolbox.  The Drive status is "UNKNOWN"

Try using a different device. Try scsi.device. I think there is another device name you can try too but I can't remember.
Have you selected the 'get information from drive' or similar button? (HDToolbox)
In the WinUAE settings, I believe one of the config setting switches enables you to enable removable drives (to show up on the Amiga side) - Is this selected?

There isnt an option that is available other than Change Drive Type

If you want real feel of Amiga... then don't use UAE to set up your computer.

This is one of reasons I'm NOT using UAE, it to easy :). There is nothing better then some random Guru (most likely due to my original caps in my amigas ;)...), then you really FEEL Amiga.

BTW. Just stop yourself for trashing you Amiga hardware (it is quite expensive!)!

I'm going to +1 this sentence, and then stop right there.  I've never used UAE to set up an Amiga, and it'll be a cold day in he** before I ever do.  IMHO it's a heck of a lot easier since, aside from finding working floppy disks, maybe, at least you're not adding another layer of complexity by having to deal with the emulation software, getting the device to mount, etc.

Why do people insist on making things harder for themselves than they need to be?

Just my .02 cents.  :pint:

Eh.   I'd rather spend time on WinUAE getting it done.  I do have 1.3, 2.1, 3.1 and 3.9 fully working under it. :-)

Anyway, this isn't how to get it done on a real Amiga, but how to get it done under WinUAE that way I can play quicker, so let's stay on topic, shall we.

With all due respect, I disagree.  I could've prepped 30 Amiga's in the time since this thread first went live.  But to each their own, I'll shut up now.  Best of luck with your project!  :D

Probably, but I'm not so much in a hurry but trying to find the easiest way.  Didnt get the WinUAE thing working.   I did get 2.05 KS installed so the kipper2k board will auto-boot.   Tonight I'll try the WinUAE thing again.  If it still wont work, I'll wait till the Gotek gets in, copy WB to it and install from scratch on the Amiga side.   Project #2 will be another A500, except with a Trumpcard 500.

The kipper2k board is in.  Its a beauty and worth the very small price he charges.  Brings new technology to an old system.  :-)

8mb RAM, standoff so I can close the case.

I also ordered a Gotek floppy emulator.  Now I can transfer my adf's between my Linux box and A500.

My first A500 will have this kipper2k board

Thanks!  I would have paid double without question.  Top notch stuff.  Hopefully he makes a Vampire for the A500 :-)

You can't use WB HDToolBox, it's too old.  Use HDInstTools!  Set the device up as uaehf.device

Also make sure you run WinUAE as Admin or it won't mount the drive.

Thats what it was!!  The HDInstTools did the trick.  Installing WB 2.1 via WinUAE :-)  Thanks TJ!

Damn...can't use an Indivision with the Kipper2k board.  I have a spare a500 though.  Didn't want to use an old/dated Commodore monitor :-/
