Title: OS 4.1FE Classic Install
Post by: Acill on January 09, 2016, 03:54:02 PM
I am attempting to install the classic version of 4.1 and it doesnt boot past the point of even getting to an install option. I have tried the boot disk it comes with, some of the others on the CD and no luck.

The boot floppy boots the machine fine. I get the screen that shows the ROM is loading. I see the OS4.1 screen and it tells me the display will switch if an RTG card is detected. I then see some color screens flash by and it just sits on the OS4.1 logo over a black screen on the RTC monitor. So I know it at least can see my Voodoo 5 but hangs up and wont go further.

I  have my memory set to 70ns and maprom is off like the manual tells me to do on my CSPPC. My Main HD is on the cyber.scsi and my CD-ROM is on the A4000T scsi. HD is split into 2X 1.9GB partitions, a 4GB and an 8GB work set.

Hardware is:
A4000T 16MB
CSPPC 128MB
Mediator with Voodoo 5, 5500, 8139A and 8129 Ethernet cards, Spider 2 USB and a FM801 sound card.

I also have a bigramplus install and understand thats only used for swap space and not system ram in OS4.

I registered over at the Hyperian forums but they still havent activated the account. No place else i can think to ask for help with this one.

Pretty sure that is what mine did on OS 4.0 install ... PPC was bad on that card :) Could be wrong.

Another symptom was that I could launch a PPC game with the Warp3D stuff but it would lock up the game after a bit. Initially I thought it was an overheating problem but after running some experiments with fans it didn't honestly seem to make a difference, lockups seemed to be random .. but guaranteed to happen if you left it on for an hour or 2, sometimes after 10 mins, sometimes after an hour.

My CPU seems fine in everything else. Strange.

After 10 hours over 2 weekends I can't get AmigaOS4.1FE to work with Amiga Forever 2016. I am sick of messing with it. What's more I bought 3 copies of AmigaOS4.1 FE for friends and 3 copies of Amiga Forever 2016 and they have not been able to get it to work. Just sick of the horse crap.

Make sure your PPC is adequately cooled. Especially if it is has been upclocked. I have an issue with mine that if I don't have a fan running on the heatsink, I start getting random errors and sometimes it wont even boot. Took a long time to figure this out, especially since for a while it seems fine.

Subtle first signs were when it actually failed to copy files correctly. The files would copy but the copies would be different. Wrong CRC and whatnot. I thought it was memory first, but adding a fan made it stable.

Got it running great here - what's your problem?

Well you had me scared so I ran all the test I could think of on my CSPPC. All the demos from WarpUP from the OS3.9 install CD work perfectly.

Must be something else causing 4.1FE to not install.

Welcome to Amiga.

Amiga was never about using AmigaOS (it is not like there is any useful up to date software or something). It is more about making it work. When you spend countless hours "making things" work you are going to look at you Workbench for few hours a day or play Cannon Fodder. After that your will get a point you just spend few thousand dollars to play Cannon Fodder that you could run under UAE for free on your 10 year old PC (you just took from basement).

Just saying.

PS. My AmigaOS4.1 runs great under UAE.

one of the best posts so far this year!

in all seriousness, though, i've never had an issue getting AOS4 classic installed, although doing it via UAE is a little harder. the best guide i've found so far is from thomas rapp: http://thomas-rapp.homepage.t-online.de/os41uae/index.html

hopefully that will help some folks. :)

Unless they finally fixed in 4.1FE, there's no driver for the 4000T's onboard SCSI. If you can move your CD drive over to the CSPPC it should boot up. One of these (http://amigakit.leamancomputing.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=27&products_id=34) should do the trick.

On board scsi is not supported.  Use IDE or cyberstorm scsi.

JurassicCamper is correct.  Onboard SCSI is not supported that is why it is hanging and not picking up the CD to continue loading at the Splash screen.

I feel for you, but you should contact Cloanto for support.   You paid for their product and they should be able to help you since they say it will run AmigaOS 4.1 Classic...

Well, I will see about moving it over to the cyber.scsi port then. I'll need to figure out how to get the CD drive working again with it. Is it as simple as just going into devs and changing from scsi.device to cyberscsi.device?

I also have a couple of IDE CD-RW drives and nothing on my IDE header at all currently. How would I add an IDE drive to cacheCDFS?

Well you should read the Section 1.0 "Installation/Booting" on the AmigaOS 4.1 Classic FAQ which is on the FE ISO.  It explains how to configure a CDROM connected to the Cyberstorm and have it boot directly using that - no boot floppy required.  That method is a little bit tricky, so it's easier to use the bootfloppy, but that will automatically detect the CDROM assuming it is setup correctly.  I usually verified everything was working properly under OS 3.9 first - eg. you can access the CDROM, see the PPC.  If it is you should be fine.  The fact that you got the bootlogo up tells me your PPC is working, which is good.

you should never run a csppc without a fan on the ppc sink-not even at 233mhz., it must have a good fan at all times. lack of fan is the best way to kill one fast.
