Title: AmigaOS 3.X vs 3.9
Post by: nicholas on January 08, 2016, 01:25:34 AM
I'm about to resurrect my A3000/CSMK2060/Deneb machine which has OS3.9 with all BoingBags upto BB4 installed.

I was wondering are any of the updated individual components from Cloanto's OS3.X or Kickstart 3.X worth grabbing and copying over to 3.9?

If you can find out the versions of these changes you may have a good idea.

"Changes and updates from Commodore version:

  Updated C/Version (Y2K patch)
  Addition of Libs/workbench.library (for A-4000T 3.1 ROMs and 3.X ROMs)
  Updated S/Startup-Sequence (for 3.X ROMs)
  Updated Installer 44.10 and FastFileSystem 45.9 (to support larger disks)
  Installer itself is now part of the system installation (inside the Utilities directory)"

Edit: No changes listed for KS ROM

If you're planning on reinstalling, there are a few updates that haven't made it into the latest Boing Bag archive yet.  I'd start by checking Aminet for any installed programs and also this site:

And the latest BB is here now:  http://amigan.1emu.net/releases/
(scroll all the way down)

BB4 is pretty close to being up-to-date as far as the vision of that project goes.  The two things I can think of that I'm sure will be added in it's next release are PeterK's latest icon.library which you can get on EAB and Thor's latest shell update which is on Aminet.

I installed the latest BB4, icon library and shell-update.

Saw this on the Amiga forever page.

Quote
The current 3.X ROM (45.061) builds on the original 40.068 ROM components, featuring the following improvements:

    Patches originally released under the ESCOM and Gateway Amiga ownership (no SetPatch or reboot required)
    scsi.device and exec.library updates by Alexander Benedictov, Chris Hodges, Heinz Wrobel and Toni Wilen
    expansion.library fixes by Jeff Weeks
    FastFileSystem fixes by Etienne Vogt
    mathieeesingbas.library fixes by Harry "Piru" Sintonen

Support for Disks Larger than 4 GB

The scsi.device updates included in the 3.X ROM make it possible to boot from disks larger than 4 GB. Additional elements, such as FastFileSystem 45.9 and Installer 44.10, are included in the Classic Support Workbench 3.1 distribution, and complement the ROM-based enhancements.

Might have a play and see what is worth nabbing.

@dannyp:

The BB3&4 package has now been updated with icon.library 46.4.418 and ShellUpdate 45.29.

@nicholas:

As far as I'm aware it's just backports of a few OS3.5/3.9 features to OS3.1.

If you already have a functioning system with 3.1 ROMs, I wouldn't bother. My A3000 was still on 2.04 so I thought I'd make it as modern as my A2000 and A1000, so I went for the Cloanto 3.X... but my floppy drives wouldn't recognize any disks, so I had to roll back to 2.0 and wait to get some 3.1 chips instead.

Nice! Missed that. Looks like my ROM's need updating.
