Title: Poseidon 4.5 and CF Cards
Post by: Acill on January 04, 2016, 05:42:43 AM
Figured I'd see if anyone knows how to resolve this. I have Poseidon up and running well for the most part now. I've been attempting to move some large files over using a USB card reader and a 8GB fat32 CF card. The system mounts it just fine, but will lock up shortly after the files start to transfer and require a reboot.

Anyone know if this can be prevented? Could it be that Poseidon doesnt have enough stack assigned to it? If so how do I increase it? I've installed it as is and not changed anything from the default install.

Does the problem exist with other devices, i.e., USB flash drives, etc.? Or just with the CF?

Sometime with flash drives too yes, its when I transfer large files or a lot of files at the same time in a batches. Its as if its a buffer issue and it cant keep up.

Which driver are you using for your USB board? For the Deneb, I could never get the DMA driver to be stable, even with my 4000T internal SCSI disabled.

Definitely check this.  IIRC, I couldn't get my Deneb to work properly without DMA enabled on my 4000D.  I know my Poseidon is out-dated, though.  v4.5 is available?

I'm using the latest spider.device on an Elbox spider II card. What driver should I be looking for if that's not it? I'm sure it is a DMA issue, just need to find out what is causing it and where to make adjustments.

System is very stable other than this and some minor things though now. As far as 4.5 goes it was made available from one of the USB board venders. Nothing really different from 4.4 as far as I see. Just less devices included.

I don't know if this is a legitimate source, or where people who are original owners are supposed to get it from, since http://www.platon42.de/ has been down for years.  But I got 4.4 when I bought my Thylacine, and 4.5 when I bought my RapidRoad.  Jens has a link on his wiki:

Hope this helps! :)

That's where I got it from as well.

Quick thought - if you copy the files to RAM:, does it also crash?  What's the MaxTransfer value on your hard drive?

I'll have to take a look at max transfer of hard drive. I am using the Ultra-Wide SCSI on my CSPPC. As far as RAM, no way to do that. The files are my backups from WHDload and other system things. Some as large a 1GB. I only have 256MB of free ram :)

Is it possibly an AmigaOS issue?  Isn't the limitation 4GB under AmigaOS?

I've got all the updates for large HD support in place, thought that takes care of it all? I could be wrong though maybe.

Well then.  ;)

I recently downloaded one of those "WHDLoad game packs".  All said and done it's something like 3.78GB.  I was wondering how I'd get it over to my Miggy then I thought about it, I'll just keep the whole thing on a USB drive and run the games straight from there.  Easier for me, and Poseidon seems to have no problems recognizing my 16GB USB drive, haha.  ;)

This might be a good test though - can you remove some of the stuff and make a file about 200MB, and transfer to RAM:?  If a file that large transfers okay to memory but not to hard drive that might help you troubleshoot the source of the problem.

Good plan, can try that for sure.
