Title: Kikstart 3.9, Amiga 1200, and Video Mode
Post by: mistermsk on December 22, 2015, 05:43:52 PM
Hi All,

I was just curious. I have an NTSC machine that I was trying to make PAL mode but that isn't going well. Long story short, its finally working again.

Anyway, I was just curious. I know you can hold both mouse buttons down. Select PAL and go into PAL this way. This is what I do every time I start my Amiga 1200. I have the dual boot happening where when I turn on my 1200, it loads from ROM 3.1. Then it does a second boot and loads 3.9 from the hard drive. Is there anyway on the second boot. That I could have it select Double PAL (I believe that is the name of it) automatically? I mean since it is software driven, there should be a way of doing this, I assume.

Just curious.

Since you mention 3.9, I assume you're talking about for system-friendly stuff.  Just change your screenmode in Workbench.  Is there some reason that you need it to be in PAL all the time?

PS - the double reboot with 3.9 is normal, that's what allows it to patch the ROM stuff.  Only way to get around it is to burn a custom 3.9 ROM.  If you didn't already know.  ;)

One of the reasons I love my A4000D, it has a jumper so I just leave it in PAL, unlike the Atari STs, it seems to me 90% (okay, I'm pulling that number out of nothing but some very limited experience) of software was written with PAL machines in mind.

I know there were quite a few games that I attempted to play that were completely broken until I switched to PAL.

I do highly recommend getting a custom kickstart burned, my system sure does seem to boot a heck of a lot quicker with certain newer libraries in ROM.  I still need to figure out which libraries those are for when I do my set up again, so that I don't end up re-loading them and having the system reset because of it.

I haven't had any problems with those when using WHDLoad to switch to PAL when needed.  Obviously your mileage may vary.  ;)
