Title: Gold SIMM on tin socket?
Post by: kreciu on December 22, 2015, 01:45:35 PM
I read in few places that installing gold plated simm's in tin simm sockets can create some problems.

What is YOUR experience? It is OK to use those simms in our old "turbo" cards?

Thank you for answers and resources!

It should be fine as long as its actually gold plate. Some metals dont react together well. Gold is a great conductor and doesnt react with other metals like aluminum and steel do for example. The problem you could face is called bi-metallic corrosion.

In this case, its safe though. Here is a good explanation of it. http://www.jsbtech.com/download/Effects%20of%20Galvanic%20Corrosion%20on%20Au-Sn-Plated%20Contacts.pdf

Thank you! I think it will take me LOOOOOOOOONG time to use my Amiga for 1000+ hours :) and results of this paper don't show any difference.

been doing this for over 20 years in amiga stuff and never had a problem.
If anything it seems the tin simms can tarnish over time and cause problems even in tin sockets.

most the 4000's i have repaired i have installed quality molex gold simm connectors for a permanent fix.

I was thinking about changing simm connectors for gold. I think this will happen some day when I will get bored again.

Thank you for your answers!
