Title: I think I got a virus...

Hmmm, I went to the interface to Usenet groups in Google and couldn't post. I didn't use it for a while and a message appeared saying that there were too many posts from my address, try again in a few hours (that's a meansure to limit SPAM and the like...). Since it wasn't me and I'm the only one using this computer in that place I think some jerk here in my home managed to get a virus... I never had problems cause I never open unknown attachments. I think I even know what it was, some kid thought he was being smart in getting a crack to a certain PC software (PowerDVD). The worst thing is that I got very important stuff on the disk that I can't lose, and eventhough it's backed up, you never know what the virus is gonna do when I do another backup of a more recent version...
Now I have to uninstall Win98SE and install it again (I dont trus virus checkers much... with a ll the stuff I got to do now ... I think I'm gonna kill someonwe instead:-x

Unlucky...

And you can`t take out the HD and plug it into another PC, with an upto date virus checker?

I noticed that there is the new BIZEX worm doing it`s rounds, it infects ICQ instant messenger, and there are the variants of the Bagle.b (beagle?) e-mail viri still going around...

I can, more boring time lost but I guess with the time I lose on forums I shouldn't be complaining:-)...

Well...before going through the trouble of a reinstall...you
might want to try  here (http://housecall.trendmicro.com/)...it's helped me out a
time or two (not to mention "free").

IMO...I would save reinstalling for an absolute last resort. To this day
I've NEVER had to completely reinstall any version of Windows, save
failing hardware. I'd say keep a spare backup (just in case), run a
few  solid utilities and you'll probably be OK.

Don't reinstall or anything drastic ...

As -D- said use TrendMicro online scan or
BitDefender Online Scan (http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php) or go and get
AVG Antivirus Free Edition (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php) (you get mailed a key for this).

Also go and get Spybot Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download) and/or AdAware 6 from LavaSoft (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/) to check for spyware.

I want to thank all for the replies. I don't trust virus checkers completely but well, I'm doing an online scan now...
