Title: Has anyone installed BetterWB 4.0 from scratch?
Post by: Tenacious on September 30, 2015, 05:06:59 AM
I've installed it twice over fresh 3.1.  The system won't boot.

My system is Amiga 2000 with GVP 68030 accel and SCSI controller with 16 MB of memory, Indivision ECS, Spectrum graphics card (installed but not in use yet with this boot partitiion)

When you say "it won't boot" what exactly happens?  You're going to get much more helpful responses if you clearly communicate what the system is doing and/or not doing.  :(

Sorry, I'm grumpy today, but that doesn't mean I'm wrong!  ;)

Fair enough.  The HD LED flashes only for a second or two and a white bar comes up at the upper right of the screen.  The boot process shuts down right there and never continues.

I re-installed a 3rd time using an older BWB3.4 version.  Everything is looking great!  I now understand why you promote the Indivision ECS.  It is wonderful!!!  ;)

I'm now curious how many folks have tried BWB and which versions.  I've only ever tried 3.4 and 4.0.

W00t!  Glad you got it!  :)  Yes, I <3 my Indivisions.  If I ever get around to putting my 2nd A2000 together I'm going to be using a 28MHz 68000 with 3.1 + BetterWB on it.  Finally ordered another soldering iron tonight, my old one broke.  Would you believe that my 2nd A2000 has been sitting in pieces for months mostly due to not having a soldering iron?

I didn't get post #3 massaged the way I wanted before getting forced off.  ^%&$#?@!%&$
I love BWB, but, I'm curious if I'm one of just a few or many people who use it.

Soldering iron aside, you seem like busy person to me.  ;)

Time to hit the sack.

I installed BetterWB 4.0 on a freshly installed OS3.1/A500 (with A508IDE) a couple of months ago: no problems at all.

I just installed BetterWB4 about a month ago, and it was my first version.

The official thread for the pack is; http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=70494

But Im sure you will get the help needed here too :)

Nonsense!

Since BetterWB v1.01 before ending the installation, the script toggles all SYS: files as executables and sets their write status enabled.

If that happened to you, then you probably somehow altered your system yourself.

Wont boot? Do you get a black screen? or what else do you see on the monitor?

Have you installed BetterWB on a clean 3.1 system?

The installation was always on a fresh, unmodified, clean OS3.1 load.  I described the results in post #3.  The screen wouldn't go black, it would just "hang', the system would lock up, and the boot process also hang.  I thought it might be an interaction with the Indivision, but after sleeping, I don't think so.

I don't know about the rest of you, but, I had a hard time rounding up 6 error-free floppies.  I think this was the root of my problem (self-inflicted  ;)).  The media I wrote Tools to had block errors (I ended up with 3 different disks with Tools written to them, none free of errors).  When 1 would stop (Retry or Abort), I would Retry with another until it stopped and then try the 3rd disk.  Its not hard to imagine this would produce a corrupted install!  Fortunately, my 3-disk set of BWB (version 3.4) was error-free.  It installed beautifully.  Perhaps next time, I will attempt to install from the RamDisk: (if the machine has enough memory) and skip the floppies.  ;)

In truth, I'm not interested in the alternate icon sets introduced sometime after 3.4.  The magic for me is in the bug fixes, improved libraries & datatypes, and the modernized capacity to deal with long filenames and Zip drives, etc, all from 1 package.  :)  I think I will simply load some of the later updates and additions (Redit, etc) manually.

@ Gulliver  Thanks again for this excellent package and your hard work to update and support it!

You know I have always taken for granted my vast supply of floppies and now recently I have have been getting more and more with errors and its getting harder to find good Double Density disks.  So I feel you there.

That's the one.  :)  Got a sweet deal on one a year or so back on ebay, think I paid $35.  Works out to a little over $1 per MHz, wohoo, speed demon!  ;)

Also, +1 on the bad floppies!  I've had to do the same thing (burn multiple copies of a disk and swap as each one hit bad blocks).  I've got a box with hundreds of disks in it, but dread each time I need to dip into it, so many have failed recently.  :(

Thats why I just ordered a Gotek USB device today. When I was installing BetterWB 4 of my floppies greeted me with Checksum errors.

I think I'm going to clean and lube my drives and try some of those disks again.  I wonder if FFS has better error checking than OFS on floppies.  Can floppies be mapped for errors and given new life with another file system?  PFS?

This would probably be useless when writing disk images.  Maybe your notion of a .LHA archive (from my DMS post) is a good alternative.

I hate .dms and .adf with a passion.  Why the H-E-double-hockeysticks are we still using floppy images in 2015?  IMHO every piece of modern software should be distributed as an .lha with an Installer.  But maybe that's just me.  ;)
