Not sure -- and it's not just image data IIRC. Let's see if we can get ssolie to answer 'cause I'd like to edit mine for Amiwest ;)

The format is currently private. There are plans to open it up to custom images.
If you do mess with it you could end up with an unbootable system so be careful.

This is what got me asking -- I wanted to modify the proportions of the image so that even though the image is apparently of a 4:3 (or so) aspect ratio, the depicted scene would be appropriate for a 16:9 display.
Hopefully the author will share his techniques at some point.
