Title: Boing Bag -1
Post by: punkyclown on August 14, 2015, 07:07:44 PM
Hi, Finally got my A1200 back on the net after 4 years.  My scan disk crashed
and I had to start all over.  I have down loaded all the Boing Bag updates
and  want to get them installed on the 3.9 system.  But Boing Bag 1 will not install,
It gives me an error message right at the beginning of the install.  The other two
installs will load up and install but inform me I should not proceed without the
first one.  I have down loaded the file from two different sites and still get the same
error.  Is there something with my system that isn't right?  Is this a known error?
Does someone have some information which could help me?

Thanks to all

Brad Hansen

First rule of troubleshooting - tell us what the error message says... take a screenshot, use your camera phone, write it on a post-it note, anything!  Plenty of people here have successfully installed all the BB's without issue.  If we knew what the error message was we could be of more help!

It's probably that you need the CD in the drive?

Also, I have a (painfully long) video you're welcome to watch, here:

Part 1:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCMw8bStvG4

Part 2:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufCuW--Q2nA

Might help.  :)

Maybe if there's nothing obvious as Mike states, you might also try running SnoopDOS..... great program!  http://aminet.net/package/util/moni/SnoopDos

Never used Snoop-dos or even new what it was for.

Wrong version of installer?

Snoopdos says it looks in C: and finds a version that passes, says Res. is "OK".
Snoops says it Fails at Logfile, Log, Pretend, Print, Language.

We're pretty much guessing at this point, but "wrong version of installer" sounds like it could be legit.  Open a shell prompt and type "version C:Installer" (without the quotes).  What does it say?

How did you install 3.9?  Did you install it onto a blank partition or overtop of an existing operating system?  Did you install it off the CD or some other method?  Did the 3.9 install complete successfully, without errors?  Did you install both 3.9 and the "Internet tools"?

Version is 1.24. I installed it off of a CD over the top of 3.5 and yes it completed successfully
with Internet tools.  However when I run -2 it opens, but not 3&4.

No, that's not an Installer version.  It should be something like 44.x.

I would really, really recommend installing on a fresh partition.  Who knows what junk you have left over from the 3.5 install that's going to mess it up.  If you need help, watch my video.  Yes, I know it's long.  And yes, I know I talk too much and need to redo it.  But I sincerely believe it will be able to help you if you watch the entire thing.  :)

Mike, Okay I will do that, thanks for the help. Doesn't 3.9 need to be installed in over 3.5?

I always had bad luck installing 3.9 over 3.5. Clean install is best. However, if you have drivers that you need to keep i.e., CD Rom... Do what I did (couldn't have learned a better lesson!), create an emergency repair disk from the 3.9 CD against your 3.5 install and then use that to install a clean install.... easy peasy! Copy anything you want to keep to you 2nd partition first and only format the SYS: partition when installing 3.9. This operation saves you a TON of time!

Nope, 3.9 can be installed cleanly... the option is in the 3.9 CD install menu. Make that ERD first! :-)

No, it can be installed on a fresh partition by first booting off the "Emergency" boot disk.  Which can be made using the tool on the 3.9 CD.  :D

Not saying it can't be installed over 3.5, I'm just suggesting that you'll save yourself a lot of headache by installing it fresh, since none of us here would have any way of knowing what you have installed along with that 3.5 install, that could potentially cause problems.  ;)

Mike,  Copied the installer from the OS3.9 disk and the update is not running!
So, thanks so much, everyone...

"Not" running?  Or "Now" running?  Haha.  ;)

I think version 1.24 is actually an ancient version from the very early 90s. Was distributed on the install disks of programs of that era, as I recall. Causes all sorts of issues with recent OS versions and larger hard disks.

Also take a look to see if Installer is in SYS:Utilities. That's another common place for it to end up. Even if you've updated the version in C:, if there's still the old version in SYS:Utilities, then something that calls "Installer" (rather than the explicit "C:Installer") could still end up using the copy in SYS:Utilities.

Put in Shell: so you can find where in the search path your system does have some version(s) of installer.

Looks like only the old V1.0g is there. The current version is V1.0k. You can get it from:

Did you use unarc to unarchive the boing bag? if so there's your problem. Unarchive it with lha instead or whatever it has been packed with.

Dang!  I try my best to always have the latest libraries on my system.  Looks like I missed this site!  From the changelog in the readme, doesn't seem like much has changed between 1.0g and 1.0k.  It's mostly stuff that anyone who watches Aminet regularly would have caught, anyway (layers.library 45.27, new Peter K. icon.library, etc.), but still.  Now I just feel bad, haha.  In my dreams, someday there will be a single site where all Amiga updates can be downloaded from, so I'm not having to bookmark a dozen different sites.  Yeah, in my dreams, right?  ;)

This is another one of my favorites:

http://amiga.foul.fr/index.php?p=Work%2FLibs

Have fun with that, not going to tell you how much time I've spent scanning that site and comparing it to what I have installed!
