Why is it called rare? there are plenty of Deneb´s out there.
Are they made of pure gold that they cost so much nowadays?
Isn´t Rapidroad USB much faster and still for sale as new?

RapidRoad requires an X-Surf 100 to be used in big box systems. Maybe not everyone likes that solution? Maybe because Deneb has the FlashROM? I dunno, just hypothesizing. I'd never looked at a picture of a Deneb up-close before. I like those jumpers "don't play".

I sell ordinary items cheap and rare items expensive...
It's the law of the market, it's like that !

@ Gulliver
There may be a lot of Deneb cards out there, but it will be a cold day in hell before I sell mine and most owners probably feel the same. Thus not many ever make it to AmiBay or eBay which makes them kind of rare.
I can't remember what I paid for mine when they came out. Now I can't imagine using an Amiga without USB.

I will never sell my Deneb, one of the best cards out there. I only wish i could of afforded them for all my machines.

Yet, here we are, trying to follow in the very same foot steps -- or rather our leaders dragging us that way. Sad how Bastiat still applies today, perhaps more so than his own time. Sorry... don't mean to derail.

Same here. I would like another, but I'm hanging onto my money for other things. I actually have an X-Surf 3cc going unused right now as I have USB networking with my Deneb. I have considered selling my 3cc and my Ariadne in order to pick up an X-Surf 100 with the USB option.
-
Call it speculation if you want but they normally sell above 300€ on Amibay from what I have seen. People pay that kind of money for it because it's a rare item.
Does the USB option of the XSurf 100 have DMA ? I don't think it does...

How does Thylacine compare to Deneb or RapidRoad? I have one for my A3k but am yet to install it.

This is only one person's experience, but I had the "original" Thylacine (one of the single-port models, from the production run by genny_flick on Amibay before he started making the four-port models), and it was dog-slow on my A2000. Plugging in almost anything would grind the system to a halt. After some research, most of what I found said the Thylacine only works well on a Z3-bus computer (A3k or A4k). For your A3k it should be fine, for example.
I sold that and switched to an X-Surf 100/RapidRoad combo when they became available, and haven't looked back. I have successfully used, mice, keyboards, flash drives, external hard drives (including NTFS), plugged in digital cameras... I even plugged in my phone and the Amiga recognized it, LOL. No issues, much better hardware IMHO and in my particular system.
*disclaimer - your mileage may vary. ;)

its not even in the same league, the deneb is a superior card, especially when zorro3 use is concerned. I havent compared it to the rapid road since the x-surf100 i got only works in z2 mode ;/

Anyone know how they compare with Algore cards. Watch for global warming ;-)

I have a Algor pro card (zorro2) and the deneb in zorro3 mode is much faster. both cards work very well, but the deneb is fastest of them all.
The algor supports usb2 but without fast mode, while the deneb does support fast mode.

And can be much faster : I had a quick look into the driver few years ago, and the code is slow like the death...
Software optimizing is work for Matthey or SpeedGeek, I'm busy with other stuff...

Considering the speed of the Amiga's bus & the DMA issues the Deneb has with most configurations, I fail to see why it would warrant such a high price over an X-Surf 100 with RR USB add-on.
The only real thing over a slightly faster Deneb transfer is 4 ports over two but then a cheap USB hub in RR kinda fixes the whole thing, if it's a port count thing that floats your boat. :-)

I don't have a dog in this fight, but just wanted to point out that the retail price of an X-Surf 100 + RapidRoad is still over €200 right now. The superior option, in my book, but I get that some people might feel different. ;)

Yea fella, indeed. It really is all down to what floats your boat. ;)
