Title: More A600 problems, now w/ McNorris special sauce
Post by: McNorris on February 22, 2004, 06:43:42 PM
So after a glitchy install of Workbench 2.05, I was able to obtain (locally) the "Fred Fish" crossdos shareware.

It would not install as per the instructions. I got failures with return codes. After this I tried installing the files manually... "mount" [mydisk]:C, "MSDOSFilesystem" [mydisk]:L, & "mfm.device" [mydisk]:devs.
These were the required files in the readme. When I then tried to mount an ms-dos disk my Ami said "you need the ars.library." Well conveiniently enough this was found on the Fred Fish and I copied it over. Now my Ami says, "can't open device MSDOSFilesystem for output."
Any advice??? more...

I have a ROM switcher. Last night it started acting funny. ROM 1.3 works fine. On the 2.05 setting the machine will not boot (Itried two different 2.05 ROMs). I wondered if crossdos wasn't working because of a problem with the ROM switch interfering with the 2.05 install. I remember my Ami said there were fonts and MEMACS (maybe some other things?) on the disk that were corrupt and could not be installed.

I guess I'll have to ditch the Rom switcher which is a big fat drag for a game machine, but are my guesses about the switch causeing an "install funk" and the fact crossdos is giving me such a time based on witchcraft or is there something to it.

Thanks for any stabs in the dark or precise, hardcore info.

Hmm...I don't know what's wrong with the CrossDOS setup, but you did seem to miss out one file in your description: the actual mount entry. This is either part of DEVS:Mountlist or in DEVS:DOSDrivers/ and that's what you mount. Just a shot in the dark, I guess you know this or you'd never got as far as an error message.

Anyway, if you have access to all the Fish disks, try to get MessyDisk. It'll read MS-DOS formatted floppies as well, on any version of AmigaOS - even 1.3. Worth a try.

As for your rom switcher, there's a very easy way to test it: hold down both mouse buttons as your machine boots into 2.05. If you can get into the boot menu, then there's nothing wrong with your switcher and its the 2.05 install.

Thanks,

I might have missed one file. I'm not around my Ami so I was cooking it up from last nights memory (and mines more volitile than my Ami) :).

I probobly can obtain this messydisk as my local dude has all the Fred Fish stuff.

And the two-button boot menu thing will not work. Damn ROM switcher! I paid $10 ebay. I was so looking forward to an old game I have that I know is 1.3 only. The thing is (as twisted as it sounds) I want to type my papers for school on my Ami, so I need the hard drive.

I guess messydisk may be worth a shot. Thanks again.
