Title: Amigas trashed!!!
Post by: spaceman88 on June 16, 2015, 10:00:19 PM
Just had a conversation with someone who works at the local cable company. They are moving to a smaller building and 3 weeks ago "recycled" a whole room full of Amiga's and accessories. He came into the shop were I was working looking for an old G3 or G4 Mac Tower! I would have traded him :-). This is a guy who likes to play with "old stuff", but didn't think the Amiga's were "good for anything" (his quotes).

Unfortunately the recycling place is like a black hole.... once it goes in, nothing escapes! Apparently is some kind of Provincial law regarding privacy or some nonsense :-(.

If it's a recycling place, not a "dump", pretty good chance the items will show up on Ebay.  I've seen that quite a lot.  Crossing all my fingers & toes that they're not just sent to a landfill somewhere!

Hmm you should give the guy a slap for all of us.  Then show him the error of his ways.
Key words here.. "didn't think.."

Should tease him about all the lost money that could have been recovered!

God I hate that!!

A few years ago a local cable company in Malta did the same thing when they moved. Trashed quite a few Amiga's. I think they had A2000's, A3000's and A4000's :(

I actually remember a few times back in the 1990's seeing the Workbench 2 screen on TV, probably after a crash or something while on the info/weather channel.

The local electronics recycling center sucks too. I've been there before and saw loads of things that could be rescued like G3 and G4 iMacs, old CRT Apple Cinema displays and lots of other stuff. I think I even saw a BBC Micro or Acorn there.

I've asked more than once, even by email and phone if I can have permission to take stuff for personal use (not re-sale) but they are like once it goes in there it aint going out. :(

The thing is, most people don't care for old computers as most of amigans do.

Heck most people don't even value Antiquities, but just see old junk.

That sucks :( I have made a deal with out local recycling/dump that I can take stuff from the electronics bins the days when the boss ain't there :P

But sadly most stuff there is just junk electrics appliances and semi-new PC's (semi-new as in this side of 2005) so not much luck there on older stuff. 15-20 years ago I found heaps of good stuff from 80s to mid 90s but then I didn't have as much storage space as today so picked way to little from there :(

Quite a few recycle/dumps here in Sweden has started to make a "discovery" area, an area where they put nice things they think people might want (all from furniture to Electronics), then anyone can pick what they want there for free :) Found a few game consoles from SNES to GameCubes there (mostly without cables tho). That's a nice trend, tho the one closest to me do not do that (the one where I pick stuff when the boss is gone).

No idea how your recycle places looks but ours are mostly just fenced with some barbwire on top so quite easy to get into and pick something at weekends when no one is there.
I would trespass for Amigas ;)

So what?  We had in our building several sizeable skids of Atari monitors that could have been repaired or made to work with Amiga because they were RBG monitors.  Who do you think would have been doing the work?  I guess that would have been me.  Am I a business?  How long would I have had to wait for people in the Atari or Amiga community to give me help?  It isn't like any of them would have flown out here to give me a hand.  And guess who would have had to pay to recycle the old ones?  Me.

Yeah, but that was Atari junk....Not classic Amigas!!!  :-).

But seriously, I was upset because half a mile from were I work there was a few hundred pounds of Amiga stuff that I (and other people as well) would have paid good money to cart home. If they had just put it on Kijiji or came into my work 3 weeks earlier, they would have made a little money and saved them the effort of cleaning out the room.

Back in the early 90s many schools here had Amigas.
Somewhere in 1998, I got word from a friend that all Amigas in the district were being replaced with PCs, and shipped to one central warehouse, where they'll be destroyed.
They had rules which said you cant give them away or sell them, only destroy.

After some efforts, my friend connected me with the guy in charge of that warehouse.
He let me in one night to this huge hangar & told me: "fill your car".
That was a very happy moment, but also sad, as I really regretted having a small private & not a truck...

That warehouse contained hundreds of A500/+, A600, mice, PSUs & 1084 monitors, it made my head spin just looking at it.
Needless to say, I filled my car. All windows were blocked except the front :)

Anyway, sadly I didnt have room to store them all back then, kept a few & gave the rest to friends.

They should take those people out and shoot them . . . with something non lethal but with public humiliation!

My A2000 came from a High School in the San Gabriel valley in the early mid 90's. My A4000T came from the FAA fully loaded. 3rd owner on that one, came fully loaded $1k.

This is a depressing thread!

I'd rather see them rescued, sold, collected, or even hoarded.

Put an ad in the paper asking to recycle Amiga computers and see what you get.

Seriously though, if Commodore couldn't save Amiga then how is the community going to save Amiga?  There is no real effort to employ past engineers or develop new hardware.  It is just certain individuals doing their thing.
