Hey all, been busy with other projects ect. but finally got my hands on a netbook to emulate mi Amiga!
My initial idea is to run ONLY Amikit but I'm in unfamiliar waters. I have Amiga Forever but I only ever used real Amigas. Mine's long gone so I'm down to emulation only.
Looking at the instructions for the Live CD / USB is nice and all, but it specifies that it doesn't access the hard drive of the host computer but that is what I need.
My main purpose is to FINALLY start on the survival horror game I concocted years ago. So if this idea of mine isn't the best (I know Amikit is resource hungry but has all the latest libs., auto-updates, etc.) please offer me alternatives.

Since no one has tackled this I decided to wade in.
Simply, it can't be done.
Emulation software requires an OS to run under.
You can slim down an OS and have it run emulation on booting.
This will make it seem like the emulation is native.

I wanted to do something like this with DosUAE. I believe the emulator needs all of the things a regular os has and maybe a boot loader too.

Too bad C64man lit up all his Amiga stuff in a bonfire! :angryfire: All those copies of "Windows XP Embedded" would have been perfect for this. Just enough "OS" to get the computer booted to the point where it could start the emulator. *sigh*
I still think that XP Embedded is probably one of your better options for this; might be worth researching?

There is a "Live" CD version that is built off of Linux that can also be run from a USB drive, but from the explanation of this version, it seems somewhat limited because of the medium it is working from.
I'm wanting to take that image and make it run from the hard drive, thus making it the only "OS" on it. ;)

As funny as it sounds, Linux might be the best OS for this task.
You can jetison a lot of the OS outside the kernel to slim it down.
I'd like to see the LiveCD version.

Linux would be great if one could run on frame buffer/kmode and not use X and be more light weight.

HI, I have the live cd too. It is basically running Knoppix which is in turn emulating an amiga(3,x). There are instructions on the Amiga Forever site on how to install it to a hard drive. It is fairly simple. From there it should be quite easy to convert it to an Amikit install. Hope this helps.

Edit: Personally I use the windows version and just set it up so that it loads directly into Amikit instead of explorer

Tried out both the Amiga Forever CD and the AmiKit versions and I'm still leaning towards modding the Amikit version.
The Amiga Forever version is clean and fast, but gives you little to no control out side the emulation. At least nothing that I could find anyway. Where as the AmiKit version does have a functional Linux layer you can use to control hardware the Amiga side doesn't have direct access to like Wireless networking, video settings, etc.
The only down side is that it does eat a TON of memory! so much that I cannot compile the AmiKit version on the netbook. Since it loads EVERYTHING into memory (another thing I'd like to change) I could not upload all the Amiga Forever files for the initial installation.
Heh, if it weren't difficult, it wouldn't be Amiga, right. ;)
