Title: PCMCIA NIC frustrations...
Post by: icbrkr on February 21, 2004, 04:01:07 PM
I swear I've had the worst luck getting a PCMCIA networking card that works on the A1200.  I originally looked through the compatibility list for cnet.device, and bought a Netgear FA410TX.  Afterwards, I find that it locks up my A1200 when I plug it in (and other people have the same issue).  So I buy a 3COM Etherlink III to use with 3c589.device.  The port that the dongle connects to appears to be dead (no link light with a known good dongle hooked up to it).  I tried it on an XP laptop (I ensured that the transceiver type was set to RJ45) and no good.  Finally, I found someone selling 10 of them for only a few bucks on fleaBay.... thinking ONE of them just has to work, all the same issue.    It's detected, but no link on WB 3.9 nor XP.  So what I'm looking for is a nice, cheap NIC, a place to buy it, etc.  I'm trying to avoid spending a lot of cash which is why I didn't buy a "made for Amiga" NIC at softhut.com or equivalent (though I probably could have paid for it and been done with it by now).  Anyone have any recommendations on a cheap NIC and a place to buy it?

These (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3461313778&rd=1) work perfectly with cnet.device, I don't know where you are or how far they're prepared to ship them, but they're cheap, they work, and there's no crappy dongle.

Something like that should make you happy :-)

Great!  I sent them an email.. hopefully it won't be an issue shipping to the US.

Thanks!

Hi Icbrkr,

Goto Aminet and download, CardPatch.lha  util/boot
what you describe is caused by the PCMCIA bugs present in the A1200.

I bought an 'Amiga compatible' card from Eyetech. I plugged it in and my A1200 would not boot. I removed the card, installed card patch, rebooted with card in place and it has worked since.

I was hoping that would work.. nope!  It still locks up upon insertion.  Grrrr... the Ebay seller still hasn't gotten back to me either.  Oh well, I'll keep looking now that I have an idea of what to look for.

Some cards, including your Netgear, seem to have a hardware incompatibility with the A1200. This is different from the reset bug that CardPatch and CardReset fix.

I've been using the Kingston KNE-PC2T card with my A1200 for a while and it works fine with cnet.device.  They go for around $10 on eBay.  IIRC, I paid $12 for a brand new one shipped.

I've also used a SohoWare model I picked up a few years back.  It's identical to the Kingston except it has a different label.  (Sorry, no model number handy).

Welp... bought a card from that auction.  We'll see how it goes when it gets here :)

Just wanted to post that I'm posting this on my A1200 using my new NIC.  Thanks for pointing me in the right direction and helping me get up and going!  Now I'm going to have to get a flickerfixe/scandoubler.
