Hi,
I finally have an A590 running on my A500. I have never saved anything to the hard drive and don't want to until I know how u go about saving things to the A590. I am sure u just don't write things out willy nilly like u would on a meanie or a mac. So a little how to here would be nice. I have a game that I would like to save to the hard drive to save the floopies so a heads up on saving games to the A590 would be nice too.
Thanks RAy.

The A590 has a SCSI HDD, you should be able to boot with a Workbench disk and use hd tool to see and partition it.
There is also utility disks that came with the A590 to guide you through it.
I upgraded mine with a mechware SCSI card reader so I can use a PC to partition and setup a CF-Card and makes it easier to swap information between the A500 and PC.
You can also get SCSI to IDE converters to allow you to use an IDE HDD which is another option.
As for wearing out floppy drive heads purchase yourself a Gotek drive ;-)
Manual can be found here

This is also a good guide to follow

Good Luck, and may the Lord Bless your endeavor!

I have no idea what you're asking here. You want to know how to install software onto your new hard drive?
TL;DR. What Dan said. ;)

@Lurch
would this work in a A590 or gvpHD+ to replace the 3.5 drive with a CF card

So it's a SCSI to CF-Card, looks like it should work. The connector appears to be the right SCSI standard :-)
Can't get over the price of these things now :-/

Google that one, I know there've been a few threads about that one specifically - the Monster - although I can't remember if they said it worked, of if it didn't.
If you can find one like this at a reasonable price might be your best bet. I know they work very well on our Miggy's, including in sidecar cases like the A590:

If one wanted to go with an SD card, there is this: http://www.codesrc.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=SCSI2SD
and sold here: http://shop.codesrc.com/index.php?route=common/home

Very cool thanks. the one oldsmobile_mike showed, will that fit inside the A590

Yes, there's somebody here who has that, at least one person, perhaps they'll chime in? I have one inside my GVP sidecar, which is lower and more sloped than the A590. Took some extra work in the GVP that I understand isn't necessary in the A590. ;)

what is the brand on that one. Thanks Bud!

Did you just take the cover off it?

Hi,
The a590 is working and booting etc. I want to know how to save things to the drive??
I have not saved anything yet. If I have a program loaded from floopies how do I save the program to the hard drive??? Do u have to specify a drawer??? Just save it willy nilly?? How do u find it then?? Some pointers on how to save things to the hard drive.
The hard drive came with lots of stuff on it but I haven't saved anything over yet. So what do u do to save things to the hard drive??? Wow so u can use an sd card now. Neat. But right now just want to know how to go about using the hard drive.
Thanks RAy.

Save it willy nilly, wherever you see fit. Treat it as a giant floppy! Just make sure not to delete anything in these drawers:
C, L, Libs, S, Devs, System, Utilities etc etc... Basically don't delete any Workbench files. Normally hard drives are devided into two partitions: DH0 (Workbench) and DH1 (Work). If you only have one partition, just create a new drawer called 'MyFiles' or something and save all your stuff / game saves into there. :)

WHAT DO YOU MEAN, MAN?
I think what you are trying to ask is: "I have this program on floppy disk, how do I INSTALL it to the hard drive". If you just want to save something... well, just hit File -> Save, like you would from an open word processor document, or an open paint program, or whatever.
But if you're actually trying to install something, like a game or a piece of productivity software, that's a whole other can of worms. Most 'modern' Amiga software should have an installer. Usually you'd insert the first disk of the application, or a disk labelled "install", or some-such, then double-click on the hard drive installation application, it would run and begin copying files onto the hard drive, asking you for each disk from the application until it's complete. You might be required to make an Assign: to the hard drive, or the installer might do this for you (depending on how well it is written), it might also ask you which partition you want to install to on the drive (for example SYS:, WORK:, etc.), again depending on how well the install script is written.
Basically there was no standard way of installing applications onto a hard drive before Workbench version 2.1 (or was it 2.04?), so if you're trying to install anything that pre-dates that, there could be any of a number of different ways. Sometimes it's as simple as creating a folder on the hard drive and dragging over the contents of the floppy disk into that folder.
Other things, such as old games, were specifically designed to not be hard drive installable. Both because of the short-sightedness of game developers at the time, but also to cut down on software piracy. There's usually work-arounds for games like this in modern times, thanks to the awesome WHDLoad (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WHDLoad) software.
Long story short, what you're asking can be a very complicated question, or a very simple one, but you're going to need to provide more specifics (such as the name of the application you're trying to install), and you should probably do some google research on "using an Amiga with a hard drive" if you are unfamiliar. Good luck! :)

If you don't find an installer on the floppy. Try copying the directory and any files to e.g New drawer onto the hard drive.
Afterwards you need to type in Shell... Assign DF0: DH0:"New drawer"
Which version on Workbench are you running?
-
Maybe it would make sense to practice with the RAMDISK: first. ;)
In the Workbench user interface, you would simply drag an icon that represents a file (like the Clock program from the Amiga dos disks) into the opened RAMDISK window. This copies the icon AND its associated program file to the RAMDISK. If you double click it, it will execute from there. When the RAMDISK window is highlighted (single clicked inside the box), you can choose New Drawer from the Window menu and create subdirectories 'til your hearts content. You can move programs and files to these subdirectories. When you power down, nothing permanent was done, everything on the RAMDISK is lost.
You can do the same thing with Hard drive, double click its icon and open its window.
Is this what you need??? Did you get any docs with the Amiga?
Maybe you are asking where to put things on a HD formated to be a single partition? You can create additional subdirectories (MyFiles, Apps, Games, Archives, Sounds, Work, whatever) on the HD to logically organize the stuff you want to add. Most install scripts look for a partition named WORK (or a directory assigned to the name WORK) as a default location to install programs and associated files.

@ rayman
I think you should have a look at the Amiga Hard Drive User's Guide, available here (http://www.bombjack.org/commodore/amiga/amiga-commodore/).

Hi,
Okay I clicked on the link and u are probably right. Of course I will not want to do it sitting here in the library. I didn't notice if I could download it or not. If I can download it Ill look at it sitting on the recliner (HAHA).
Thanks RAy.
-
Hi,
Will try it out as soon as I can get a print out.
Thanks RAy.
-
Hi,
Will try the willy nilly method also next time I turn it on. It is here on the kitchen counter so I have no excuse not to use it. Of course Ill have to unbury it. Any flat place is just tooooo convenient to lay things on (HAHA).
Thanks RAy.
-
Hi,
With a long reply I will definintely need a printout (HAHA).
Thanks RAy.

Hi,
Okay downloaded the pdf so if it actually got saved to the thumb drive Ill look at it later. Wow that link is the mother load of pdfs for the amiga (HAHA).
Thanks RAy.
