Been playing with my AF and Faery Tale Adventure and discovered a VERY annoying problem, THE !@$@%!@#@!@#$%^#$^ bird totems don't work!
If you're familiar with FTA, you know the bird totems give you a "birds-eye" view of the area you're in. A real life-save when you're inside a maze and need to know where the heck you are!
When I use a bird totem, I don't get that, I get the same screen I'm looking at with a flashing "+" showing where, I guess, I would be at IF I could see the overview map!
Seeing as the playing area of FTA is rather HUGE, this is quite annoying.
Has anyone else experienced this?
Does anyone have a fix? Other than playing the game on an Amiga?

Hmmmm, you might try bringing this up over at EAB http://eab.abime.net/index.php as that seems to be the defacto for everything games and bugs. I have never played this yet but, if I did, I would probably play the WHDLoad version. Did you get the game from the Games Archive? Sometimes if you check the TOSEC you can a fixed version... Maybe check the TOSEC here at EAB... http://ftp://grandis.nu/Commodore_Amiga/TOSEC/Games/%5BADF%5D%20%28TOSEC-v2012-12-24_CM%29/F/ Hope this helps.... ID=FTP PW=EAB

I changed your title to express my feelings on the Amiga scene:
Amiga Forever is a Faery Tale Adventure
-
Actually, I don't remember where I got this particular adf.
I may try the whdload route and see what that gets me.
@danbeaver: CUTE!!!!
-
Well, son of a biscuit!
EAB had the answer. It's a memory problem. As in too much!
Took my emulation down to just 512K and voila' totems work.
Thanks giz for the hint.
-
;) N/P! At least I got sumthin right today! :roflmao:
-
As a quick update and a FYI for other people, I went in and configured the emulator to just 512K RAM and everything worked perfectly.
Add 512K to the "trapdoor" memory/slow RAM, and the bird totems stopped working again.
Very curious...

More importantly is there a patch to get rid of those garish yellow boots?
-
I can't remember if I was ever able to get this game working properly under WHDLoad. I loved the advertisements as a kid but could never afford the game. Might have to give it another go, see if I can get it running. Ah, nostalgia, thanks for the post and reminding me! :D

@Oldsmobile Mike
If you never tried Faerytale adventure before, I think theres a good chance you wont like it.
What was great in its time was great graphics, action RPG style (you could compare it to having been Diablo with joystick in some sense even, but with some small puzzle elements), and its huge size.
However, nowadays especially that huge size is big turnoff for new players, since you ahve no clue where to go, and you have to go like hour before you might end up somewhere (well okay, its not really an hour, but it feels like that).
If size of the world and mazes would be about 1 percent from its real size, it would actually still be pretty nice little game with few nice little puzzles to crack.
For someone who already have played it before, they have some idea where to go, and they know how to speed up the guy (find the turtle) etc. hence they can have more patience with the game plus the nostalgia factor even the graphics aint stunning anymore and action RPG element is not really worth much compared to todays Diablos etc. anymore.
It is unfortunate that such a great game havent stood the test of time and new generations of players wont be able to to feel what a great game we had in those days with this one.
-
And all the time on those LONG walks all you got to look at was those yellow boots. Well apart from the scenery.
I don't have a great urge to play the game. Well maybe just a bit.
-
@gertsy:
Yellow boots?
On my computer, Julian's are the same color as the road, sort of a orange-ish brown.
Phillip's are blue.
Poor Kevin is the brother with the yellow boots!
If you were driving Kevin around, dude, you got the wrong brother! He's a wimp!
It would almost take a miracle to get kind, gentle Kevin powered up to win the game!
Trust me, I tried once. Wasn't pretty.

@Bugala:
I think you are a bit harsh on it, it's one of the best Amiga RPGs IMHO. The big world is one of the good things about it, but it is perhaps somewhat empty...
You can use the MCE program to enable the trainer, then you can move around a screen at a time with the cursor keys, to save time.
-
@Curtis
Go to turtles back and keep swinging your sword and even kevin levels up fast enough. Or is there something I dont know about this game? For i have never actually finished it, but it seemed to me like you should simply kill the first brothers and concentrate on playing with that was it kindest or luckiest brother? Not sure if there is really any benefit from that luck/kindness really, but point is anyway that you get the turtle and keep swinging sword on its back, and you wont die naturally anymore. Hence it seemed to me like just take that brother with that best stat that cant be affected, and complete the game with him.
@Minuous
What is that MCE program? I would like to know since I still plan to complete this game one day, and that sounds like something which would very much enhance the experience by speeding the game up.
-
Oh yeah, I know about whaling away at the turtle!
Still, to me, the best shot is Julian. He starts out the "bravest" so it takes a bit less to level him up to where he can get around without having to cower from all the ogres and wraiths.
Also, I noticed as soon as you get whoever up where he can get down to finding all the stuff, his vitality goes up and the sucker is hungry ALL THE TIME!

It's the Multi-game Character Editor, available from my site at http://amigan.1emu.net/releases/ or from Aminet.

Well dang, look what I found on my 2000:

Complete with "solution"! :) Too bad it's thus far thwarting my attempts to run through WHDLoad. Too many hardware mods, LOL. I seem to recall it worked on my 500, might have to give it a try on that one of these days. ;)

Haven't played this one yet so thanks for the tip :)
Size and hard to figure out do not scare me off :)
A world map maybe helps also, got the manual (there is a worldmap in it) for the game on my server if someone wants it :)

That map, oh, LOL. I think if I had to live in a place surrounded by such pleasant-sounding locales as "Plain of Grief" and "Burning Waste", I'd just off myself, haha. :roflmao:
-
That's the good map and manual. Provides all the routes for the mazes. Saves a lot of time.
Would've killed for those maps the first time I went through the game!

Haha yeah, the most pleasant place to settle would probably be "Pixel Grove" but then you would live in fear of the dragons in the snowy north and a nice breeze of swamp from the south xD Flee the dragon attacks to the south and get lost in the swamp and drained by gigantic mosquitos or head east and swim in the lake of dreams xD Lake of dreams smells dead rising haha
Yeah when thinking of it I pass ;)

Yeah I think they are quite handy for first timers. I will try not to use it to much tho and I hope others can have some use of it also :)

Of course, once you figure out to press the space bar before picking up anything from closed chests and other hidden places you can end up with almost limitless stuff!
Then use the heck out of bird totems (when they work!!!!) life is much simpler in the "open air" mazes.
