Look like there is an 8 bit get together in our area. http://www.vintage.org/2015/east/ is the link for this meeting. Hope to see people from the Washington D.C./Baltimore area there. This was posted over on Lemon64 by a Baltimore member.
I have nothing to do with this meeting. I just want to spread the word for the local 8 bit people.
-
And Amigans show up there, too.

I would surely hope so. I am looking forward to this, but I have amiga, C-128, and C-64 machines here - so I have it all covered.
-
I know this thread get buried quickly, but is there really no interest from our more local (Washington D.C., Baltimore, etc.) users? People always seem to gripe that we have nothing local to us. Well, here it is. Let's hear some support!
-
New Jersey? Gaah. Well, might be able to make it...
-
I might have some trouble making it too, but I am going to try. We don't have much that's close.
I am still working on trying to get a place for us Amiga nuts to get together in this area. Don't loose hope - it'll happen.
-
I've never been to one of these despite being about 30 minutes away. I always figured it would be just a bunch of neckbeards talking about the "good ole days" with some yellowed demo machines on display. Maybe that's the point of it or perhaps it's more. I may drop in this time, just to see for myself. I think hearing Brian Kernighan and Bob Frankston keynotes would be nice.
-
I still use C-64, C-128 and Amiga machines. But I also have a Mac, PPC G4 tower - and newer Windows machines. I find it all extremely interesting.
BTW, I also have a beard.....
-
I will be at VCFE, with my Amigas. We have a 30 years of Amiga display we are bringing celebrating both the original machine all the way up to modermized 1200s and the current Operating systems. I don't have Amiga OS 4, but I do have MorphOS on a Mac Power Book. You can check out our google+ page at thegurumeditation.org which has our youtube channel as well which will have videos of our prep for VCFE, modernizing the 1200, and other Amiga projects we have planned as well as video we take at VCFE 10.
We'll have at least one of each model line there this year, only missing the Tower versions of the 3000 and 4000. Probably something we will do every VCFE from now on, with varying displays each year we can make it.
-
The VCF East show is great. I really enjoy going every year and the venue is also very interesting with a great communications museum. This year there will be a couple of Video Toaster booths, a booth about going online with your Commodore, and our Amiga 30 booth. It is our fist time doing a booth so it might be a little rough around the edges (our 4000 is a tad yellow but fully functional!), but will still be good. Here is a link to the exhibit lineup: http://www.vintage.org/2015/east/exhibit.php and our YouTube playlist that will have a re-cap of our booth as well as the other Amiga booths (hopefully) if you can't make it. I was looking at that exhibitor lineup last week. 234 miles from me. Tempting... of course I'll wait until the last minute to decide but might make the drive up for Saturday. :D

I always figured it would be just a bunch of neckbeards talking about the "good ole days"...
Hundreds of people are there... families... men, women, and children.
...with some yellowed demo machines on display.
A wide variety of 1960's to early 1990's computers are there. To see photos from past VCF East's, go to

and click on the Vintage East links.
Oh... and those gun-metal gray computers from the 1960's don't yellow. ;)

Amiga/Retro fans 35 minutes away? I'll be there. I wanted to go last year and meet Haynie, but missed it due to scheduling conflicts. I missed the past few TCFs as well, but I'm bringing the whole fam for this one... :)
-
True to my last-minute decision making, I'll be heading up to this tonight after work. See y'all tomorrow, I'll be the dorky guy probably wearing either a NASA shirt, a roller derby shirt, or an Amiga shirt, haha. I guess I bitch & complain about there not being any Amiga shows on the east coast often enough, I might as well head up to this one!
-
Looks like I won't make it. The ride I was counting was coming up from Florida. But a last minute change of plans means he will not get here until next Tuesday. Best laid plans of mice & men, I guess.
-
Got into town late because of work (surprise, surprise). Checked about 15 of the seedy little rat-infested looking motels around here. Every single one was either "no vacancy" or the lobby was closed. Got pulled over by the cops in the process, I guess a guy pulling into every motel in town looks suspicious, or something. :( Anybody going to this look for me in the morning. I'll be the a*hole sucking down coffee and looking like he just slept in his truck. FML. I hate New Jersey. :-/
-
Last year I stayed at the Rodeway Inn which was less than 2 miles from the VCF East venue. The Rodeway was plain but comfortable.
Didn't see any rats,

The show was really cool! I really enjoyed talking to both the Amiga and Atari guys. Both had very impressive tables from an equipment standpoint. My wife was not thrilled with the conversations going on and was bored out of her mind, but my son and daughter seemed to be interested in the show from a general stand point.
It was a very nice family outing and the rest of the exhibits are very nicely presented. I giggled over the C64 exhibit. It reminded me so much of my dad's desk in '84.
-
Because I'm tired, here's my 30 second review and picture link. Enjoy! :)
..............
With the exception of it being in New Jersey, Vintage Computer Festival was awesome. :) There was a couple dozen Amiga's and Commodore systems, and of course hundreds of others - stuff from the 60's through early 90's, mostly. Building itself was much more than I expected - a former military post from 1913-1990s for electronic research and communications, had rooms full of radio gear and diorama displays. Much of the stuff was hands-on, including fun science stuff for kids. Operate a hand-cranked WWII field radio? Why yes I can say, now I have. :) All the Amiga folks were really friendly, Mac folks were kinda snobbish, stereotypes abound, but there were some kids and families there - it wasn't all geeky neckbeards, LOL. ;) Fantastic time, I might exhibit next year. Will need a lot of coffee if I'm going to survive that plan. 224 pics on my flickr:

We need more stuff like this in the Washington, DC, area. :(
-
Thanks for the pictures, Mike. There was also an early blue Amiga 3000D motherboard in the pictures, very nice.
-
Very interesting show. Great photos. Not at all what I expected. Now I am mad I didn't make it to this show. Maybe next year.
It's a shame we can't muster something along these line here in the Washington area. I guess it's time for us to get to work.
I was surprised to see an SX-64 in there, and all of the Amigas. Great stuff.
-

Yes, it took me a minute to recognize that when I saw it. Very nice! :)

Yes, next year!
I was playing around with the SX-64 for a while after someone turned it on. I couldn't remember how to get a directory listing, after using those C64's for probably a decade... 1984-1994... I felt really bad. Had to google it this morning. Damn this getting old thing. :(

Ha ha, thanks for the kind words Mike. You were the guy who was really good at Turrican II right? I think I can make out your face in the photo you took of the VideoToaster. It was great meeting you and all the folks who stopped by the booth were great. We had an absolute blast and enjoyed razzing our Atari neighbors all weekend. Hope to see you again next year or sooner!
-
Thanks for the pics Mike! Very nice! Looks like a nice time. I can see that there is a lot of interest in the older computer equipment - that's great! I'll tell ya, sometimes I think I should just get rid of all the old computer [strike]junk,[/strike] err stuff, that I have collected. But I can see that it would be better donated someday. I gotta quit tossing stuff into the dumpster - I threw alot of IBM (real) XT/AT computers and boards away last summer simply due to space problems. I see there's some real nice Toaster setups too! I gotta get back to my A2000 project. Anyways, thanks again... :)

Ha, that's me! I could've totally won that game, but nobody wants to sit there and watch me play it for the couple hours that would take, LOL.
I wish there were meetups like that a little closer to the DC area. Do you know of anything?
Hopefully by next year I should have my third Amiga put together, along with the closet full of books and other stuff I have, might be enough to put together my own exhibit.
Oh, and welcome to amiga.org! :pint:

The Toaster setups were excellent! The poor guy in one room kept having heat problems and the circuit breaker blew while I was there, but the guy in the other room had some really awesome remote control cameras, including one that could be wired to follow a person around while they were doing a presentation. Funny that both of the Toaster guys had Derringer boards in them... normally an A500 accelerator, you know? I had to tell him about @Metalguy66's 128MB Derringer mod posted here on the forums a couple months ago (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=68638). One of these days I need to get that for my A500! VXL*30 is great, but a bit starved for RAM. :(
I had a fun time playing games on the PC Jr. setup, also. Guy had that thing maxed out, he also loaded up Windows version 1.01a on there, how's that for a classic?
And you know, if you ever feel like getting rid of that '060 card, *cough cough* *nudge nudge*.

That Derringer mod was AWESOME! I'll bet that guy was geeked about that!
If you get around to the mod, I'll bet you'll enjoy doing it! I love hardware the mods the most and the smell of burnt flux in the morning!

Seriously, I still have my Win 1.01 disk(s) somewhere!!!

You'll be the first to know! That is if I don't deliver it in person whilst I'm interviewing for a job in DC - 'cause there's no jobs in W. MI. and I'm starting to worry! :hammer:
BTW, can I PM you later this week? I have a crap load of Q's on this 3.9 install.... It's running but....

Sure bud. What's it doing and/or not doing?
I just fired up my 2000 today to load the copy of PPaint I bought a month or so back on there. I'm no artist but it was pretty slick how it worked "out of the box" with the GVP Spectrum video modes. I've got Brilliance and DPaint V on there already, but they don't support the Spectrum screenmodes. Good stuff, gives me "the warm & fuzzies" every chance I have to use one of my Miggy's.
I also tried that new 4.1 icon set on Aminet (http://aminet.net/package/pix/picon/Icons-for-AmigaOS), but even with all my hacks & patches, it was still too slow to be usable, LOL. I suspect this would require something along the lines of a PIV or CV64 and an 060 to be usable. ;)

Hey Mike, glad you liked the 30 Years of Amiga exhibit. Yes, the venue is great. The museums give a varied bunch of things to do besides the computers which is awesome. There are still a few I haven't been through.
I met so many amazing people there. The Atari guys were awesome and had a super fun mult-player game I cant wait to put on my own Atari machines. I wished I had brought Lotus 1, 2, 3 for the Amiga considering the Visicalc booth across from us.
I love comparing that blue 3000 motherboard to the later green one. I have quite a bit more interesting stuff from Commodore that will go into later exhibits. Pretty sure we intend to do this again and again and again as long as we can.
Madshib, sorry your wife was bored but glad you and your kids had a good time. One of the best things was seeing kids playing with Deluxe Paint on the 4000. Nice to see an Amiga can entertain them as much as it did us.
We should get some more get togethers going on from the North East down to DC. Bring back some of the sense of community we had in the days of users groups.
Now, to figure out what theme to have next year and what machines to bring.....

She was fine for a little bit. Heck, there was a woman there selling soap! That kept her occupied for at least 10 minutes! Lol.. :) Then the ever famous "Oregon Trail" on an Apple I... I swear I saw her geek up for a split second. Then another minute passed, quickly followed by another minute.
I was really stoked to see all of the different Amigas and the guys presenting them. I'd love to bring my A4000 next year with an IGame setup going.
I didn't talk to the Mac guys, but the Atari guys were friendly enough. I had never seen a Falcon before and to see it side by side with the Amiga table, reminded me of wars from long ago ;)
Crazy how similar the Falcon 030 and the 500 are in appearance. I guess that was the competing market then? I don't even remember seeing them advertised.
BTW Mike, were you wearing a black Amiga shirt with boots?

I think the Mac guys got a little irked that I kept jacking up their Newtons. I picked up the first one and he's telling me how it's connected to the web, but there's no backlight so I'm squinting at the screen 'cause it was impossible to see. So then I pick up the second one and I press on the side to eject the stylus, and the danged wireless card comes out! They put the "card eject" button in the same place as the "stylus eject" button on the previous model, LOL. Then the third one? I ejected the battery! That's Apple for ya, no design consistency, and completely unintuitive! ;)

Yup, Pico had to get in on the action, as usual. My A1200 is (shamefully) naked, as I've finally set up an SD card adapter to replace my (actually working) HDD. I like the HDD sounds, though, so I may go back and try using a PCMCIA CF for my computer transferring needs. Also waiting on an Indivision AGA Mk2 and a 1233/40 '030 Accelerator.
I live in Mount Vernon but work in the Tyson's Corner area. I sometimes go into DC, though I try to avoid it.
-
Nice! Good stuff. She'll be a sweet little system once you get those mods in-place. :) Have you looked into Kipper2k's HDMI output converter, that fits in-place of the RF output? If I had an A1200+Indivision that's what I'd use, instead of the DVI.
You're not that far from me, I range from DC to Manassas/Gainesville/Centreville areas with most of my jobs, so I probably pass you going down 66 all the time. Think the biggest hurdle is finding a place that could host. We did a few local meetups at @bigbronc's house in Maryland last year-ish, but he hasn't been active on the forums in a while. My house isn't suitable to host a meetup, I've considered taking over one of the conference rooms at my office but since we're basically a 24/7 operation, I'm not sure how well that would fly. :(
Any ideas?
-
Tricky, not sure where we could host it offhand. There are some hackerspaces in the area that might be into the idea of retro computers, though. NovaLabs in Reston (http://www.nova-labs.org/blog/), Tech Shop in Arlington (http://www.techshop.ws/, more of a for-profit workshop), and HacDC in DC (https://www.hacdc.org/), which I was a member of up until recently.
If we turned it into a class about retro computers, it'd probably be easier to pitch. Hackerspaces are generally pretty open, though.
I hadn't heard much about the HDMI option, but that looks cool. His site seems dated though, as it seems to indicate that the Indivision MKii isn't complete. Where is it sold?
-
HacDC... I get spam from them all the time. Probably for two years, and I still haven't had time to look into it. *sigh* :(
Kipper2k sells his stuff directly, very reasonable-priced, IMHO. I've bought a thing or two from him before. Shoot him an email, he should get back to you in a day or two. :)
This is another thing I might consider if I had an A1200 - the CF Adapter - External: http://kipper2k.com/cfadapters.html . If I had an A1200. ;)
-
Weird, the "Contact" link on his website isn't working. That's a new site, I hadn't looked at it until just tonight. His previous site had everything listed on one long scrolling page. I'll PM you his email address. :)
Edit: Second thought, he has an account on here, as well? You could try that, too. :)
