So is there a definitive number how many X-1000's are in the wild and is there a breakdown by geography? I'm curious to know how proliferated the latest hardware is.
-
Iirc it is between 300 and 1000. This is based on comments made by TrevorD at Amiwest 2013.
-
We have sent them all over world. I think the top countries for quantities sent would be USA, Germany, UK. Lots to European countries. Additionally we have sent a few dozen to Australia, New Zealand and even some to South Africa, Israel, Japan and Russia.

Russia is a European country.

Of course the numbers exist, but whilst the X1000 was made with the remaining few Amiga enthusiasts in mind, none can be trusted with specific sales figures.
Between 300 and a 1000? So it could equally be 333 or 999, the latter being three times the former. It's as ridiculous as saying 300 (+/- 233%)
And if you are a developer what could you possibly do with such a vague sales report? Is my target audience 300 users or 1000? What possible advantage is there in not sharing these numbers, I don't know. Yes, releasing them would make A-Eon a target of some criticism but surely they would be used to that by now. They should focus on the positives; There's enough flag wavers out there. Well, somewhere between 300 and 1000 of them.

That's some interesting math you have there.
The likelihood of 333 == 999 is slim at best.

Considering that being a programmer requires some foundation in math, I'd say most programmers could get a really good laugh from that.
Let's take a closer look.. You state that the range of 300 to 1000 is as ridiculous as saying 300(+/- 233%). I disagree wholeheartedly. The range of 300 to 1000 is clear and well defined. Your proposed replacement works out to a range of -399 to 999. Not only is that a bit low on the maximum end, but the possibility of selling -399 computers is well outside the original specification.
If you prefer a range by percentage, let's go with 650 computers (+/- 53.84615383%). That should get you much closer to the range you started with. It's not nearly as dramatic as your original range, but it's mathematically possible, at least.
They should focus on the positives; There's enough flag wavers out there. Well, somewhere between 300 and 1000 of them.
That depends on whose numbers you trust.

Russia is a European country.
Not really. Only 25% of Russia (Western Russia) lie within European borders.
The rest is part of Asia (hence the general term Eurasia).
Lastly, when people talk about European countries they're usually referring to those with close cultural and economic ties to each other. i. e. EU member states.
Of course the numbers exist, but whilst the X1000 was made with the remaining few Amiga enthusiasts in mind, none can be trusted with specific sales figures.

Does it really matter? Neither 300 nor 1000 would be considerably profitable for any software dev. People are mainly doing it for the love of the platform.

Read what he said again, it's English, "in addition".

Curious why you picked Russia and not Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Israel, or Japan.

I don't think it matters to any developer in the Amiga community if the number is 300, or 1,000, but I also don't agree with keeping the number a secret. It obviously bothers some users and since it really isn't of any consequence one way or the other, my preference would be for A-Eon to release the numbers of sales and be proud of them, no matter what that number is. It would remove one more tiny barrier between the users, and the decision makers, and I don't see any negative repercussions from releasing the sales numbers, but obviously Trevor & Matthew may have some other reason(s) I don't know about, or may not agree with, for why they do not wish to reveal those sales numbers.
I am a big supporter of both A-Eon and AmigaKit, but that does not mean that I won't express differing opinions of my own from time to time. It does not mean that I won't disagree with some of their decisions occasionally. But it also won't mean that I abandon supporting either of them or their companies, just because they do things differently than I might, if I were in their shoes. They have information that I don't, plus they have their own opinions on what is best for each of their companies.
I wouldn't mind knowing how many other X1000 owners are out there, but it isn't a big deal if I don't know that number. It's just curiosity that most people share, not enough users to make a difference to developers trying to decide if they are going to write code for any Amiga platform, or instead spend their time on a more profitable platform. If they are worried about making any money, they are in the wrong place already.
IMO, releasing the number would only be beneficial and might encourage 1 or 2 additional X1000 sales. I think that Trevor should be very proud of what he has accomplished.

The majority of Russians and the capital of Russia is on the west side of the Urals. Also, the slavic people constitute majority populations throughout eastern Europe and the Balkans and have been woven into the rich tapestry of European history.
And when amigakit referenced Russia, it was clearly grouped with other non-European countries. What are the odds the X1000 was purchased by someone in Yakutsk?

Russia is not in the European economic area. Within Europe (with exception of Norway and Switzerland) there is no need to fill out any customs forms. In contrast, Russia has no free movement of goods from Europe over it's borders. Therefore courier companies do not class it as Europe.
I forgot to add to the list above Canada, Turkey, Mexico and Hawaii (USA). There are quite a few X1000s scattered over the globe :)

What was that number again? I didn't catch it the first time.:roflmao:

Me neither! What is the harm in telling us how many units have been sold so far?
Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe) states:
"Of Europe's approximately 50 countries, Russia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russia) is by far the largest by both area and population, taking up 40% of the continent"
-
We love Russia.... So we, who are not in EU are not European any more ?
-
I seem to remember from the Risk boardgame I played as a kid, that most of Russia was in Asia. Also, Tbh, you guys will gripe about anything. :uzi:

Woot! Mexico? I wonder who that is...
Amigakit: Any chance you can tell me where in Mexico have you shipped those and how many? I'd certainly love to get in touch with these people!
Cheers,
Dragster

75% of it is in Asia, correct.
Most schools teach that Russia is "Eurasian".

Learned from Risk ? I really hope this is a joke ? :)

Good one, it would be better if they dropped some x1000 :)

We might as well consider Japan part of Europe then.

A lot of people in the UK don't consider themselves to be in Europe.

@Rob
Very true ;-)

so, since when national background and differences are being on topic here?

@warwrzon
Sorry, you are quite right, this thread has wandered off topic. Lets get back to the main X1000 subject from now onwards.
