Post by: bluewater41 on October 24, 2014, 01:33:15 AM
Hello: i have this unsual issue I have Os 3.1 on my Amiga occasional the following files in C Dir get written over. I have protected them but sometimes i still get errors. Files are Add Datatypes,Info,Iprefs,List,Mount, version.

My question is what would cause this! Would there be a problem with Motherboard I have version 1b 1992.

I bought it used on ebay. thank you for all response appreciated!

When you say "get written over", are you saying they're being replaced by older versions of those files, or just becoming corrupted? Are you running any installer scripts (to install games, for example) that could be writing over those files?

You don't say if you're operating off a hard drive but I assume so. Your issue could also be caused by a failing hard drive. It happens. You can replace it with a CF card like this:

You should still check the caps on your motherboard but that's not what's causing your current problem.

Yes what I mean written over they were Corrupted I have to replace files with new copies and set the Protect bits so they can't be written or Deleted. Maybe I should  been more specific. I have used various CF cards as a HD. It doesn't seem like a failing drive, it seems to occur after installing software.

Could it be a virus?
Some bad memory chips might cause that also.

Troubleshooting 101, retrace your steps. If the files get corrupted when you install software, it's probably the install process.  Can you break it down, exactly what you're doing to install software?

Also, are you using FFS, or some other exotic disk format like PFS or SFS?

OS 3.1 and corruption of filesystem? Let me guess, your CF card is bigger than 4GB?

Iam using the installer with the newest one, Iam up to the point to suspect the motherboard. It doesn't do it when I install software when I use the Winuae. Iam using a 4gb CF/SD card I have 1 8gb cf card which i don't use much. hI again for all good advice, I have been using FFS file system
Max transfer rates I have been set at 1FE00.
Thanx again my Hd partition are all under 2gb I set DH0: around 900mb.

A very good point was brought up. How big are your CF Drives? If they are over 4Gb, that's your problem right there (unless you are using a 64 bit FFS).

Like others have said, your problem will either be filesystem corruption (due to incorrectly configured HDD) , or a virus.
Every amiga owner should have VirusZ installed - just to check their hard drive once in a while, or when handing new downloads / unknown disks.

I had the Ebola virus a couple of years back (I'm a jinx) and VirusZ sorted it out.
I always use Voodoo-X to handle my archives too as it has a built in virus check (using xvslibrary) which I always select before extracting new archives as there's still files on aminet which are infected with virus's believe it or not.

I got the Ebola virus from an infected MagicWB download from "Zeb's Amiga Downloads" however.
