Title: Got myself a Power Mac G5?
Post by: carvedeye on October 15, 2014, 09:36:37 AM
Ok so I have managed to get myself a Power Mac G5, I only need some ram and a hard drive to get it up and running (that's if it even works) and I am wanting to know how hard/easy it is to install MorphOS?

Note that you need
- A supported G5 model (PowerMac7,2 or 7,3)
- A supported graphics card in the G5 (ATI card)
You can read more about it here: http://morphos-team.net/hardware

If you have that installing MorphOS is very easy.
1. Burn iso from http://morphos-team.net/downloads
2. Boot the G5 with CD in the drive while holding down the C key on the keyboard until you see the MorphOS boot screen
3. Wait for boot to complete and follow the instructions in IWizard which starts immediately.

It's pretty easy. Boot from CD, select locales, setup disk layout and some prefs and done.
For installing morphos and macosx read: http://library.morphzone.info/Dual-boot_MorphOS_and_MacOS_X_on_a_Mac_Mini_G4

I've got a G5 (PowerMac 7,3) Model A1047 here but it has the super huge NVidia graphics card installed and not ATI.  It's a Dual 2.7GHz with 5GB of RAM and No HD installed.

I am offering it to anyone who wants to come and pick it up.  I am in London, Ontario, Canada.  If anyone wants me to ship it to them I could, but it weighs a lot and could be costly.

Please send me a PM if interested.

I had one of these shipped from New York State about a year & a half back. It cost north of $30.00 back then, but I am sure glad I did it!

That sounds like a good MorphOS machine. Of course, an ATI card would need to be found. Shipping would be a bear also.

I'm still waiting for the day that my G5 will be on the compatibility list.   :)

Also, note that the ATI card in question has to have Mac firmware onboard, the equivalent PC model will not work. In theory one could reflash the firmware on a PC ATI card, but the Mac firmware often takes up more room. Sometimes it is too large to fit in the flash memory chip that comes with the PC cards when the manufacturer picked a memory size that was "just large enough" to save money.

Which model of G5 PowerMac did you get?  Have you confirmed that it is one of the models on the compatibility list? http://www.morphos-team.net/hardware

If it is one of the liquid cooled G5 PowerMac's, it most surely has leaked coolant at one time or another, and probably has corrosion that should first be removed.  Then replace the "O" rings with new ones and put it all back together.  Every liquid cooled model I have seen has had moderate to excessive corrosion, even when they have not had serious leaks from the cooling system yet.  This corrosion sometimes cannot be seen until you have partially disassembled the system and removed the G5 CPU card(s) from the motherboard and case to look underneath them.  I strongly suggest that you check for corrosion and clean it all up, before proceeding any further with testing of your new G5 PowerMac.

Then look around for an R400 based Radeon graphics card and a hard drive or SSD and you should be ready to go.  Installation of MorphOS is usually very easy and automatic, and quick.  ENJOY!:)

Here is the power mac I got, I won it on eBay for 99p and I have tested it and it works I have put 2 gig of ram in it (will add more as soon as I find some from my box of tricks) hope it is compatible with morphos, so I can dual boot it :)

A working G5 for 99p? That is a steal!

Maybe a record low price in the MorphOS community :)

Well, a Radeon 9600 is listed on the base specs, and the card that can be seen in those pics actually seems to be one, so it should just boot the MorphOS CD straight.

Nice!  Was the owner pissed at not getting more money for it, or were they happy just to have it out of the way?  ;)

Well after playing about with it, it now locks up and I am forced to power it off with the power button so I'm guessing that it is overheating going to strip it down tomorrow and try and sort it out :(

Locks up when? Not by any chance after about 30 mins of MorphOS usage? It shouldn't but I'm just thinking that if it could be demo mode slowdown related...
