Title: PC floppy cable to internal A1200 floppy cable..
Post by: Fizza on September 23, 2014, 07:31:40 PM
After a HD 'crash' around 2003 put my towered Amiga out of business, which then led me down the PC route, I managed some years later to resurrect the HD and copy all the stuff of it to the PC, but in the process of removing the HD etc.. I ended up semi-gutting the Tower and even with the HD back the thought of putting it all back together was too daunting at the time (circa 2008), I was just happy to get my files back.

However, I recently dug out all the pieces and am going to give it a shot to get it back up, it's a good system; Eyetech tower with A4000 keyboard adapter, Blizzard 240mhz 603e/040 w/Bvision, IDE Fix and a few other nice bits, it's been a bit of a journey just to try to identify all the stuff I bought and installed circa 1998.

The problem is that for the life of me I can't find the extra long floppy cable that connected the floppy drive to the motherboard, so here is my question:

I jacked a PC floppy drive cable and noticed that it's twisted at one end, I read about that and am of the belief that it won't work as is for what I want, however, if I unclasp the connector and untwist the piece that's twisted and put it back together again, will this solve the problem?

Once I get this part resolved, it will be time to start reassembling the machine and see if it will power up. I do have a Surf Squirrel that connected to a SCSI CD Rom, but I'm thinking of losing that and mounting a spare DVD Burner that I have and possibly selling the Surf Squirrel to fund a wifi ethernet solution to get my machine hooked up to the network and the net.

BTW; before it gets mentioned, I know that there are CF Floppy replacements which look great, but I do want to be able to run my games, and I have a bunch of floppies with other stuff on them, then maybe at a later point doing all that and getting a replacement solid state HD with WHDload etc... My main goal is to just get it up and running at this point so there is still a hill to climb :)

Should work.  Untwist the wires and put them back in place as straight through and problem solved.

Only difficulty is sometimes those connectors don't like to go back together!  Ask me how I know...

Good luck.

Although I've had good luck modifying PC cables for my Amy's, Amigakit sells long floppy cables as well.

Thanks for your help, I managed to unclasp, untwist, and it looked like I got all the pins lined up right to the already made holes, reseated the clasps etc.. so hopefully I'll plug it in and it should work!

Appreciated!
