Title: Wilse's St. Valentine's Day Massacre (well almost)
Post by: Wilse on February 16, 2004, 09:44:24 PM
Almost killed the girlfriend and myself on Saturday morning.

Came off the road, in the Highlands, in the middle of nowhere, at
60mph.
Crashed through a fence, bounced onto the cars right side (driver's),
over a ditch, continued to plough through a field, with tufts of grass
gliding towards the windscreen then underneath underneath me and
watched the windscreen crack in trippy slow motion. We ended up with
the roof of the car resting against the cable stay of a telegraph
pole, which stopped the car from toppling onto its roof but meant the
pole almost toppled onto the car - it ended up leaning at a very weird
angle, kind of hovering over us.

Luckily (miraculously? :lol: ) we both escaped out the passenger
window without a scratch.

The car is a complete write off, which is a shame financially as it
was only insured for 3rd party, fire and theft.

Still, at least we're alive to complain about the cost. ;-)

Talking 'bout luck indeed. But why'd you get of the road? Ice?

It wasn't the A9, was it? The infamous road of death?

Damn right it wasn't nice.

Scared the bejeezurs out of Sue.
She thought we were dead. (Looking at the car afterwards, you'd be
forgiven for thinking we were.)

Wilse? What world do you think this is? Not even In Trollesund can we drive cars off the road with our Valentines (us trolls have an equivelant to Valentines, they are called 'Tredatrons'), and nearly kill them.

I hope you have profusely apologized to your beloved. Dear me, the standards of the world outside Trollesund are just disgraceful!

@Kenny:

It was the A82, just past Crianlarich, on the way to Glencoe.

Sound nasty.  Glad you're both ok.  Where did it happen?  As someone who lives in the Highlands I can say that it's generally great for driving.  Quiet, fairly high speed roads and amazing scenery.  Unfortunately, I also know that the "middle of nowhere" roads can throw up some surprises with no road markings or warnings of upcoming very sharp bends!  A dicey combination.

@Odin:

Although the road was icy (watched someone else have a nasty skid
at the same spot, while waiting for the police to arrive) the accident
was entirely my fault. Lack of concentration, combined with extremely
poor driving ability. :-/

I see you already said where was.  The A82 can be pretty dodgy in places too.  Just be glad that it wasn't on the road to Applecross (NW Highlands) - highest and fastest climbing road in GB.  Crash barriers might as well not be present for all the confidence they inspire.  Very hairy.

@Abou27:

Luckily we went off the left hand side of the
road, which was very bumpy but sort of flat-ish.

The right hand side was bordered by a very steep drop to a rocky burn.

Would have been a lot worse.

I once came off the road too.  The worst thing and the part which seems to go on forever is when you are fully aware that the crap is about to hit the fan and are also aware that you are no longer in control and can do nothing about it.  Not pleasant memories.

Thats terrible, I'm glad you and the missus are alright. 60mph is pretty bloody fast, your lucky not to have collected a tree. What kind of car was it?

You live and learn. At least you two are ok... thoguh the shock that sets in an hour or two afterwards is often as traumatic as the event itself.

@ Wilse:

It is good that you two were unharmed.  I assume that you'll be more cautious in the future.
