Title: Poll: Which TCP/IP stack do you use for classic Amiga?
Post by: Oldsmobile_Mike on August 22, 2014, 06:41:04 PM
Doesn't look like anyone's asked this question in a couple years.  ;)

I have an X-Surf 100 in my A2000 and love, love, love it.  Yes, I'm using it with Miami DX but what can I say?  It was super-easy to set up with the GUI (Roadshow, I'm looking at you with your no GUI), I can run it in startup to go online as soon as my computer boots, and I can easily click the icon to take it offline if I want to play WHDLoad games.  Yeah yeah, I know it's slower than molasses in January, but it's easy to use.  A lot easier than all these threads I see on "EasyNet" difficulties, haha. ;)

So, what do you use?

Hi I have Roadshow on my A1200 and A600 and it runs like a dream and real easy to set up ,but I am afraid Easy Net is beyond me and I never managed to get it to work properly but I do buy the EasyNet Ethernet adapters from Amigakit and they are excellent value for money but used in conjunction with Roadshow .  best wishes Brian.

Miami DX with a wifi card currently on my A1200, mostly because it's nice and easy to use, i mainly go online to get on my file server over the network and to download stuff on aminet etc, I don't really surf the net on a 030 for anything but downloading files.

Speeds are little under 300Kb/s (2,4Mb/s), feels slow when im used to gigabit fiber on my faster machines but fast enough for what I use the miggy for and if I want large files I just transfer them via CF.

Might give the others a try if/when the phoenix core is done for the vampire 600 on Amiga 600 tho, currently I do not go online with that machine :)

Genesis was always fine for me, along with the Prism wireless driver.

Well, voted for four stacks :) Genesis has been the main stack for me since late 90s. It's still in use on my main A1200, but then I've installed Roadshow on two lower end A1200s. Those two a1200 computers actually have Genesis, Roadshow and MiamiDX installed and I can use any of them according the current need :) I've been using MiamiDX on my main a1200 too when I need broadcast functionality, but not usually because of its slowness. And then I have older AmiTCP/IP on A2000 and A600 still...

Out of all the stacks Roadshow, fastest, easy to use. Works great with my mediator :-)

Can easily be stopped started with WHDLoad and doesn't appear to slow my A1200 down.

I used to use MiamiDx when I was using dialup connection. Today I'm using Genesis because it's much faster and is easy enough to configure. It also doesn't look that bad.

I used to use Miami since back in the dial-up days and kept on as I registered it but now I've switched to Roadshow. I prefer the non-GUI and always online. It also feels good to support an active developer.

I answered and use Roadshow 68k on my most current Classic 68k machine. Another one uses Genesis/AmiTCP 4.x. I also have I-Net 225 TCP/IP. Easynet just arrived in the mail from AmigaKit the other day!  I heard there are going to possible be some updates to that also.

I have a Miami disk here, but am just now buying an x Surf for my A2000 (Finally). I am not sure what I will end up using for the TCP/IP yet.
Looking forward to this upgrade!

Hi just a quick question, does Genesis  offer anything more than Roadshow  because it appears to be popular, best wishes Brian.:)

Genesis has a pretty good GUI which Roadshow does not. This comes at the cost of some memory though. The original Genesis is 109840 bytes (I have an edited version that is 92820), GenesisPrefs is 184232, GenesisWizard is 126240 and AmiTCP.020 is 122748. Then there are various ClassAct gadgets and such that need memory so you wouldn't be able to do much without several MB of memory (more needed for a browser). Roadshow has easy to use scripts and configurations which save memory but are not as easy to use as a full GUI. Roadshow, Genesis and EasyNet should all be fast and offer semi-modern TCP/IP for the Amiga.

I have a 10/100 mBit PCI NIC in my Mediator PCI busboard and love it, too.

I'm also using MiamiDX. Setup was easy and as MiamiDX is located in WBstartup, it starts each time I boot and also gets the correct date/time from an online time server. No leaking RTC batteries anymore...

As I already mentioned - MiamiDX, as well...

EDIT:
Does one of the Miami competitors also offer the functionality to get date/time from the web upon boot and to adjust your system clock accordingly?

Do figures exist regarding the speed difference compared to MiamiDX?
What do you mean with "semi-modern TCP/IP " (with view on MiamiDX)?
What do the others offer that MiamiDX lacks?

There have been several threads on EAB and here with transfer speed results. Miami and MiamiDX have consistently done poorly. Genesis/EasyNet/AmiTCP 4 has generally been the fastest. The Roadshow was a little behind Genesis but may use less processing power and may have been improved.

MiamiDX is now one of the oldest TCP/IP programs as far as updates. Dial up was still popular at the time of the last update. It was fairly advanced for its time but it was never finished, some functionality is buggy and it is slow. The GUI was the best at the time but now Genesis and EasyNet also have a nice GUI. If MiamiDX is working fine with your current setup then there is not a big incentive to upgrade but I wouldn't recommend it for people needing TCP/IP software anymore.

I think Genesis has that built-in too, but can't check just now. And of course you can use some external program (like Facts (http://aminet.net/package/comm/tcp/facts)) to get/set the time with any stack.

AmiTcp 3 here. Nice, fast and free. Can suck to set up.

Long time ago I was playing around with some network programming and I think the MiamiSDK was a bit more modern (or maybe actually the stack) and supported things like getaddrinfo() which AmiTCP didn't IIRC. The code would only run on Miami though.

Must try to find one of those threads...thanx for the hint...

Yeah - can remember that. I was still on dialup myself when I bought and registered Miami and MiamiDX...

From my inquiries back then I know MiamiDX actually was THE most advanced TCP/IP stack at the time.
What is unfinished about it and which functionalites are buggy?
I never experienced anything of it - neither bugs, nor unfinished parts...

The GUI was the best at the time but now Genesis and EasyNet also have a nice GUI.

It was just last weekend that I got EasyNet CD from Amikit.
I bought it just in case MiamiDX stopps working one day because of some changes to the TCP/IP protocols...

Since I got it over a decade ago it works like a charm - never experienced any trouble with it.

???
Why not?
It still works perfectly...

Went with Roadshow.  Tested Easynet, Genesis, and Miami.  Roadshow was the fastest for sure especially for the X-surf 100.  Roadshow is well supported, super easy to get going, and is pretty transparent.  It was recently updated and yielded even faster results.

Some MNI drivers on Miami yielded decent speeds.  The Ariandne (not the II) was my favorite card up until the X-Surf 100.
