Title: HxC2001 vs Nalbantov USB ADF reader?
Post by: blakespot on August 15, 2014, 04:44:44 PM
Which is better?

I've got an HxC2001 in my A2000 and another on the way for my 520ST. But I've been seeing a lot of this new unit on eBay. It seems to read ADF images directly, without then need to first convert them to HFE files.

The HxC2001 is obviously more versatile, but for use on an Amiga, how do they compare?

Dont touch this, its a ripoff.
Looks like a repackaged Gotek floppy emulator, which costs around 20$ (including shipping).

See here:

I'm currently using 3 of them, total cost of the units & USB programming cable was $65, including shipping.

The USB TTL programming device is the $5 of the $65 quoted above and is freely available on eBay as well.  There is some light soldering necessary to put the pin headers in (<10 minutes) and the whole process for the first drive takes about 30 minutes.

However for an Atari computer,  the firmware in the quoted article is for an Amiga and I don't know what would be needed for the Atari.

As far as I know, there are already firmwares for both Atari ST and Amstrad CPC.
The author is not releasing them due to many sellers who started selling units with his Amiga FW, without his agreement.

Hopefully he finds a solution soon & releases the new FW in some form, I have spare Gotek units already waiting :)

Thanks for the heads up on this being a modified Gotek unit, unauthorized.

So -- how about Gotek vs. HxC2001? Basically same question originally posed.

Which is a nicer setup for Amiga? Thanks.

Gotek is cheaper and requires no conversion of files, however the plastic is cheap looking and I spray painted mine beige (enamel) to compensate.  The HxC is metal, does more things and more expensive. It requires conversion of adf files first.  I had 2 HxC's and sold both after a week; just too much of a hassle.  I now have 4 Gotek's and like them.
