Yesterday I downloaded NetSurf-m68k from
http://aminet.net/package/comm/www/NetSurf-m68k
and installed it on my system to give it a try.
But I cannot start it - after double-clicking the icon it loads for a while. Then - all of a sudden - my Miggy crashes and reboots.
I also tried it with SnoopDOS running - but I cannot look fast enough to see what the last action was and why it failed when the system crashes.
My system:
A4000 with CSPPC 128mB; Mediator & Voodoo4 PCI, Terratec 512i digital PCI and 10/100 mBit PCI NIC; Deneb USB 2.0 (Zorro III); OS 3.9 w. BBs 1 & 2 / WarpOS 16.1
Does anyone here have an idea what could be going wrong there?

Did the older version work?
I am running Netsurf using WinUAE, and it works fine there.
-
First of all the last version of bernds ixemul library. Dunno if its included. Should be something like v 63.1. Google it. Amigasf oder so.
Then snoopdos can save a log or output to serial. OPtion is in front of you. If you fear to corrupt the filesystem while crash install rad and save the log there.
Could be also stack issue. Especially runing afa. Check tooltypes or set high stack when running from shell.
Sorry im on a mobile.

It was the first time that I tried to test Netsurf - never had it installed before.

I'll look into that tonight.

Btw questions like that are best asked on eab. There is a netsurf thread and Arti visits there as well. Developers and more experienced users are not frequenting awnet or here.

Yes - Artur sent me the latest version via mail. I'm going to try this one this weekend...

Great. Asking on awnet is useless as you see. But the aminet version should work too. I dont even think the screen depth plays a role. I think its stack as i didnt have such issue even on aros68k last week. Artis netsurf may be not an ultimate piece of programing art but its not so buggy and worthless as some like to claim

Artur told me the aminet version has problems with Voodoo graphic cards. The latest version he sent me is said to work fine with a Voodoo3.
I hope it also works with my Voodoo4.
I also discovered new drivers for the Mediator and Voodoo4/5 - perhaps that can also help...

That's why I want to geet it running. This way I can see myself how useful NetSurf is on my 68060@50 mHz...once I get it to start...

I see. Thats probably due to migrating away from ixemul. Nova works on his own sdl lib that works on amiga screens and adds now rtg support. Artur links netsurf now against this afaik. The problem is the many inconsistent pixel formats of amiga rtg cards. I have a mediator and voodoo as well as p4 and cv64 maybe i can help begening of the week.

Double post. Sorry.

Ah, someone else who uses a Voodoo 4 in their Mediator. The new voodoo.card and pci.library updates from Elbox don't work for me:
http://eab.abime.net/showthread.php?t=74331
It's too bad as one of the improvements would allow to get rid of the BYTEREV/Swizzle in the Warp3D Voodoo/Avenger drivers speeding them up and shrinking the driver. Elbox has never fixed the big endian color problems for the Voodoo4+/Napalm so I'm not expecting much from them.

Matt. Have you contacted elbox about it. From my experience one can talk to them. Maybe i could mediate being polish after all:-). But its you who would have to explain the problem. Do you have a solution in mind?
Because i suspect there is too few v4 users for them to care. Or they want to sell out own v3 stock.

Where can I get the latest version? I googled it, but all I found was version 48.0 on Aminet - uploaded by a Benjamin_Niemann on 1999-10-14.
EDIT:
The version of the ixemul.library installed on my system is 63.1.

I think this might be it.

Elbox's voodoo.card P96 driver should work for both the Voodoo 3 and Voodoo 4-5. The Voodoo 4-5 VSA-100/Napalm chipset is mostly backward compatible with the Voodoo 3 Avenger chipset but the initialization and setup is different. I believe Elbox only sells Radeon gfx cards. There is little reason for them to sabotage the Voodoo 4-5 compatibility. I believe I did report the distorted color problem a long time ago and never received a reply. They did respond to a problem I had with a dead on arrival ethernet card from them and they removed the charge from my bill. I have had mixed results dealing with them. They do seem to be bad at losing e-mails, maybe sometimes to their aggressive spam filter. I have not reported the most recent problems with their voodoo.card or pci.library but they may know about it. I think Cosmos has been communicating with them. He may be the one who asked for the change in the initialization setup so that the thousands of BYTEREV/Swizzle inlines are unnecessary in the W3D Avenger drivers. I let Cosmos know about the Voodoo 4 problems as well as posting about the problems on different Amiga forums. I get the impression that Elbox wants to provide the minimum of support and maximize their profits. I don't like their proprietary/closed software and standards attitude either. I think they would sell more products if they supported OpenPCI, AROS, generic USB cards (instead of charging for a generic USB card with a modified ROM), etc. and had a good reputation in the Amiga community that users wanted to support. I know you would like to see some of the same. Their hardware products are good. Good luck changing their attitude though, even if you are also Polish.

I've made new version that uses 8bit RTG screen mode.
Tests on WinUAE noJIT shows that scrolling is much faster!
Depth can be changed in Options now.

You may lacking AfA OS (http://amidevcpp.amiga-world.de/afa.html).
I`ve installed it for the first time a while ago, in order to run NetSurf 68K.
-
i dont think afa os has anything to do with it, except it is the same person that did "aros on amiga" and the sdl.library port. why would that be? bernds sdl needs his ixemul library instead, thats right, even though as far as i see the effort by artur and novacoder is to replace this dependance by another statically linked library that proviudes both rtg and native amiga chipset support at the same time for sdl applications.
im not quite sure how far this is by now.
