Title: NTSC Amiga
Post by: Dr. Chef on July 17, 2014, 03:13:32 AM
Hello again. I bought a A500 a while ago, but it was damaged during shipping and I had to return the monitor and A500.

I'm looking for a NTSC Amiga 500 with WB 1.3, RGB cable, mouse, Kickstart 1.3 floppy. I'd preferably want one with 1mb or more of ram.

What I have: Working NTSC 1084 Monitor, Kickstart 1.3 floppy (might have to return it), Null modem cable, spare floppies. All I need is a working Amiga500.

Thanks,

Dr. Chef.

Do you realize that most Amiga software is PAL specific and will work on a 60 Hz 1084 series monitor?  It's switchable!  The only thing you'd need is a 60 Hz power supply for a PAL A500 in the U.S.

The only real use for an NTSC Amiga is to hook to an old television.

Also, the A500 has the Kickstart in ROM.  Only an A1000 or early A3000 needs a Kickstart floppy disk.

No need to help some aggressive humans! :-)

Am I better off buying a pal A500 to use on my NTSC monitor? Would there be any color or scailing issues? I want to run protracker.

There may be issues if you connect to the monitor using the composite port, but if you're connecting over the 23pin RGB port it doesn't matter. The Amiga can switch between NTSC and PAL in software if you have a 1MB Agnus or better.

You should be able to switch between NTSC and PAL by pressing SPACE bare at the kickstart screen.

JP4 on left side of FAT Agnus chip I believe controls what mode that Amiga 500 should use by default.

Will the NTSC monitor display the PAL modes?

There is no startup switching of screen mode in KS 1.3, one needs 3.1; the A1084 monitor is flexible enough to handle NTSC and PAL. PAL give more scan lines and hence, more screen space.  For a VGA monitor I would recommend an Indivision ECS flicker-fixer; for HDMI monitors/TVs I would use an Amiga RGB to SCART cable with an SCART to HDMI converter.

Sorry if this is of no help.

Would I be better off waiting for a Minimig? What about getting a A600 or A1200?

Let me repeat: Any Amiga with a 1MB Agnus or better (e.g., almost all A500s/A2000s, and all newer Amigas) can properly display NTSC or PAL if connected to an RGB monitor (e.g., the 1084) using the 23-pin video port.

Degrader (http://aminet.net/package/util/misc/Degrader) will allow you to switch video modes for machines that don't have Kickstart 3.x.

I was able to purchase another A500 from eBay.

Edit: I need a RGB cable. How much does one usually cost? On Ebay-land, I'm seeing them go for roughly 25-35 USD.

@ Dr. Chef

Depending on the age of your 1084, it may have a DIN-style port instead of a DB-9 port, so you'll need to look for an older style cable. AmigaKit or Vesalia may be able to help, but considering your proximity to them also take a look at Redmond Cable (http://www.redcab.com). They used to do a ton of Amiga cables back in the day and may still have some stock, even though they're catering to industrial clients these days.

Do people even read links before they post them? Don't get me wrong, I love the fact that they are linking to my sale, But if someone actually took 2 minutes to read the thread, they will see the guy is looking for an NTSC A500, NOT an A4000 (Big difference).
Also, people are trying to convince him to get a PAL unit. The poor guy is in the US- The USA is NTSC land folks. Not 100% of Amiga Users GAME! if they do, you can switch to PAL if you have 2.XX Roms and above by holding both the mouse buttons down on boot,  so investing in a machine that you have to import (in Most cases) from overseas, and spending a %&$#?@!%&$#?@!%&$#?@!%&$#?@!load of money, that will give no real advantage in the end is just plain stupid and irresponsible. I call these people IGNORANT and PAL SNOBS, because chances are, they have NEVER used an NTSC machine for gaming and are really talking out of their ASSES!
sorry for the harsh word and the rant, and I know Europeans are going to blast me for this, but I have had BOTH an A1200 PAL and NTSC machines running side by side , playing games and I can honestly say there is absolutely no difference. In fact, I find (and its just my opinion) that the PAL machine can be a pain if you don't boot into NTSC mode, and causes headaches for the flicker (but I am susceptible to epileptic seizures).

I believe my monitor has a DB-9 port. http://imgur.com/9xkg9IQ

Edit: Never-mind, I bought a cable.

I ended up buying a DB-23 Female to DB9 Female cable.

@ Dr. Chef

Great, let us know how it goes. I think you'll be very happy with the display quality.
