Title: Amiga 2000 hd problem
Post by: utri007 on July 15, 2014, 07:04:52 PM
I got a Trump card Pro and 1gb IBM hard drive for my A2000. Amiga 2000 is REV6 with kickstart 2.04

Everything goes OK, when I boot without GVP Impact 3001 accelerator connected, but with it installed it doesn't boot from HD. Sometimes it boots when I press A + A + CTRL

GVP is quite old revision, so jumper guides on amiga.resource.cx doesn't mach 100%

I have GVP's IDE boot rom disabled
Trump card has a F1 ON SID2 ON, others OFF
IBM HD doesn't have any jumpers ON (tried many compinations)

Any help?

I assume the A2000 boots from floppy with the GVP 3001 installed, so does the HDD show up in Workbench when you boot from the floppy?

You are right, HD is shown when I boot from floppy.

If it's an intermittent problem, have you considered that either the drive or power supply might be starting to fail?  Possible for you to check voltages, or to remove the extra controller and run a drive directly off your accelerator?  Have you tried it with any other expansion cards removed, and making sure all your connectors are nice & clean?

Personally I had pretty bad luck running a drive off a separate controller than my accelerator, and this was even using both devices by the same manufacturer (a GVP accelerator and a GVP HC8+ controller).  Would recommend if possible just putting a drive on your accelerator and running like that.  Good luck!

This is a "new setup", trump card and HD are proven to work.

GVP Impact 3001 doesn't have a SCSI, it has a very very poor IDE. Max 1024 cylinders, not a RDB compatiable etc.

I've had that setup boot fine from an A2091 controller, but not with KS2.04, instead with KS3.1.  I'm sure you have your reasons for 2.04 vs 3.1 but some of us have more familiarity with 3.1.

Thinking about the issue, the boot process (sans GVP 3001) with KS 2.04 must recognize that the HDD is bootable and turn over controlled to its boot ROM; then with the GVP taking over booting from the KS ROM and then not recognizing it.  So it comes down to the ROM code not passing the HDD as bootable to the GVP 3001.  Have you checked for any ROM updates available?  Does the Trump card use an RDB?  Would you consider trying KS 3.1?

KS 2.04 is just fine.  I don't belive that 3.1 could make a diffrence. Both of these products are made before KS3.1.

But I have some thoughts, I was transferin file with AExplorer and it terminated twice. Both times also mouse's left button stopped to work, so could it be because dry condersers?

I made a test, I loaded all cards inside of it, GVP, Commodore bridgeboard and trumpcard, turned it on and let it be about a half an hour. After that it bootet just fine with A + A + CTRL

After all this amiga hasn't had anyt use maybe in ten years.

OR

Could this be a Zorro II address base problem? I have full 8mb on GVP and Trumpcard must require some?

J5 - memory address of CN7-CN10 SIMMs
ON - Zorro II address space (with 1 MB SIMMs only)
OFF - 0x01000000 (with 4 MB SIMMs only)
