Post by: adz on February 16, 2004, 12:06:34 AM

Slow on 64k really?

I'm using 33k6 at the moment, all seems fine, so it must be a problem at your end

More than likely on DEET's end, my proxy is showing bugger all usage at the moment, will have to wait and see what happens at home on a 56K link. Come to think of it, I was kinda rude assuming that it was the site and not me, sorry.

Tis a lot better at home on 56K, in fact I reckon its a bit faster than the previous layout.

I agree it is a bit slower, which surprised me given the optimisations built into XOOPS2.

Wayne, if the grumpies on the site force you to go back to XOOPS 1.3 Im sure between the three sites that use it ( AmigaWorld, Targhan's Morphzone and your Amiga.org ) we can manage patching any exploits and bugs that get found between us.

BTW, only main XOOPS support for 1.3 has been dropped but Im guessing your hosting provider mandated the upgrade.

Going back to Xoops 1.3.x is not an option because of the security risks.  It's not going to happen.

As I have said elsewhere on the site, this type of comment provides NO HELP AT ALL!!!  The change to Xoops2 was made mainly because of security reasons.  With it comes many layout changes.  Yes, some of you may not like it, and it will take some getting used to.  Rather than simply bitching about it, why don't you provide some constructive criticism point-by-point, backed up with reasoning for each one.  We're more inclined to listen to something like that than arbitrary whining.  Like Wayne, I am tired of it!!   :evil:

Engine behind it all might be more secure and faster - but graphicaly is really #OOPS#e... It just needs a bit of visual magic and it would be fine

What security risks? I find this a curious one really. Ive been through all the publically known advisories and checked our site covers them all, where it applies, with patches. Ive even found some extras through my own testing that Ive notified Targhan of the fixes for.

Perhaps it is something peculiar to your own setup that made XOOPS1.3 insecure.

@Dave,

Sorry, but we're not really interested in publicly discussing the security holes in 1.3.10.  I've already notified the core coders, so we'll see what they do with it.  Just keep an eye out on individual user records.  I'm fairly certain we were targetted by someone who didn't like being banned, but if it can happen to us...

I agree with Silvrdrgn. There is simply too much bitchin' around here. There has been a huge change in AO's looks, but as I have understood it, this will change as time passes...

Looks aren't everything... :)

Very well. I was rather surprised by the layout change, and I'm sure I'll be able to navigate my way around the site in good time again. The one thing which immediately struck me as 'awkward' is that there is very little visual separation between posts in the forum. To the eye, it is now one long text, with little distinction between each separate one. There's only two indicators (avatar info and reply button), and they are not in the same 'vertical column' as the text. Inside the 'column' there's just a bit of bold text. But since everyone can insert bold text... You get the idea.

As it stands now, the old layout was simply easier on the eyes. I'm staying away on purpose from hollow phrases like 'I want the old site back!' or 'The new look is crap!'---I'm sure the site is still undergoing massive editing and tweaking. But you wanted constructive criticism, so here are my two cents. Now excuse me while I have a look about what new features I have at my disposal ;-).

@Wayne

OK fair enough but if you could send us a private message as to what you have been seeing it would be a tremendous help in securing ours and Targhan's site against the idiots.

Dave.

Please e-mail me a screenshot from your machine as I simply don't understand your comments.  The fields for comments are varied by color and easily distinguishable.  The only thing I can think without seeing what you're complaining about is that you're running a browser so old that it doesn't understand TD bgcolor=

If that's the case, you need to upgrade your browser, as there is zero I can do to fix it.

I think what's actually happening is the grey "bleeds in" from the side panels. That's what makes it look like one big block of grey, you might have noticed a similar effect with the grey scheme on the old site. The blue used to break it up more.

But there are three VERY distinct shades of gray in use.

Perhaps it's a "crappy video card" or low settings issue?  :)

Heh heh ;-) Well, we all perceive things differently...

I'm not going to say any more, I'll probably get yelled at.

Not yelling at all.  The problem is, 2004 is not the age of 16 color displays.  If you're running an antiquated browser which automatically translates everything to the magic 216 color palette, then yes, I can see the potential for a problem and "bleeding" colors.

I'll see if I can find some sort of way to get around it without screwing it up for the rest of the people running modern computers.

I'd love to mail you, but I cannot access your personal information page where I can find your address. The site says I don't have access.

I can vouch for the fact that it has nothing to do with the quality of my video hardware. It is a GeForce 4 TI4200, running at optimum specs, in a 64K color mode. It could be a browser issue, as I'm using IE 5.5. But even that browser is not *that* antiquated. It could also be bad eyesight catching up on me, but I think there are plenty of regulars who match and exceed my 30 years.

This is an issue we're both aware of, and working on, but wayne@ shouldn't be that difficult to decipher. :-)

A few points:

The brown/orange/blue graphic at the top of the main page looks a bit uncool 70s.  What was wrong with the old blue logo?  In fact, the main page doesn't even have a heading - there nothing to tell new visitors they've reached amiga.org, unless they look in the window's titlebar.

When I was typing a long comment in over the space of an hour (was doing other stuff too), when I clicked submit I found it had logged me out!  There was no way of getting back the message I was typing either.  The old site used to leave me logged in all day.

The fonts on all the pages are far too big, and many are different styles - on some pages there is Arial mixed in with Times New Roman.  For example, on this "post reply" page the "Disable Smiley", "Attach Signature, "
"Notify me of new posts in this thread" checkbox labels are in different fonts to the labels on the form buttons.

The quote/url/link icons are not obvious what they do.

There is a 0.5cm black border around the edge of the page, when a page is loading (before any content appears) the page is all black.  The change in colour is a bit disconcerting.

The site is too wide for 800x600 screen res.  AW.net and MZ, other XOOPS sites look fine with 800x600.

Just trying to be constructive.... sorry if there're any mistakes in this - I had to speed-type it in case it logs me out again!

Oh - and when you click on a forum you get a list of threads in it.  On this page in the old amiga.org the information was nicely laid out in a tabular format, but now it's lumped together in a format that makes it more difficult to quickly scan through.

@Smithy
There is some info that you ought to read in the news item  about the upgrad. I'm too lazy to post a link.

These are not bugs.  These are simple things that have been addressed many times.
